(Celia Sites who married Aaron Isaac Moyers resided in Pendleton County.) This Benjamin's World War I draft card names his sister Clara Wratchford. Her death certificate in Tucker County shows that Clara Wratchford died 8 March 1920, aged 42. Neither an exact date of birth nor parents are given. Nor can an appropriate Clara, aged 2 in 1880, be located in a census before her marriage to verify her maiden name. Her eldest child Theodore Wratchford was born 6 August 1904, Hendricks, Tucker County, West Virginia, son of W. F. and Clara Wratchford, per his birth certificate. The sister Mrs. Florna Whitt who is mentioned in Benjamin's obituary offers more promising insights. Flornie Pennington, age 22 of Tucker County, West Virginia, married Chester Whitt, age 23 of Virginia, on 23 February 1912 at Parsons, Tucker County, West Virginia. [Tucker County, WV, Marriages, p206.] Chester Princeton Whitt died on 14 September 1945 in Marlinton, Pocahontas County, WV, leaving widow Florna Whitt age 54. They are buried together in Mt. View Cemetery, Marlinton, where her tombstone indicates "Flora [sic] P. Whitt, born 1890, died 1957." Her death is not recorded in WV so perhaps she died in a hospital just over the state line in Virginia. Florna would appear to be the granddaughter in this 1900 census enumeration: 1900 Randolph County, WV (Dry Fork District), p27: Phebe Pennington, head, May 1837, 63, widowed, farm manager; Alice Keagle, daughter, September 1877, daughter, 23, married 6 years, 2/2 children, housekeeper; Floyd Pennington, son, September 1871, 18 [sic], day laborer; Jdson [sic] B. Roy, grandson, January 1887, 13; Flarny Pennington, granddaughter, May 1891, 9; William I. Pennington, grandson, January 1895, 5; all WV/WV/WV. Phebe was the widow of Vintson B. Pennington and their household was enumerated in 1880 Randolph County, WV (Dry Fork), p214: Vincent B. Pennington, 67, farmer, carbuncle; Phoebe, 42, wife; Arbella, 18, daughter; Emma Jane, 15, daughter; Sampson, 12, son; Melvina, 10, daughter; Vincent B., 6, son; Alice, 4, daughter; Millie, 1, daughter; Adelia Pharis, 19, daughter; Joseph Martin Pharis, 10/12, born August, grandson; all WV/WV/WV. In 1870, same location page 436, one daughter is Marcelia, aged 12, and apparently married by the 1880 census. And next door in 1880 we find Cornelius Pennington, age 21, with his wife Marcella, age 22. This family was not found later and one wonders if they were the parents of Clara, born ca. 1880, Benjamin, born 1884, and Florna born 1890-91. In 1860 Cornelius Pennington, age 1, resides with his presumed parents Mathew and Elizabeth Pennington, PO Black Fork, Tucker County, WV, p937. And in 1870 he is aged 10 in the household of his presumed grandfather Solomon Penington, aged 63, farmer, and [wife] Jane, aged 52, plus several children in Dryfork Township, Randolph County, p437. The 1850 census of Dryfork shows Mathew aged 14 as the presumed son of Solomon. Morton's History of Pendleton County, page 273, indicates that the grandfathers Vincent B. and Solomon Pennington were brothers. A definite Sites connection was not found, and further research in the Randolph County records may reveal guardianship and lineage information for these three children. This Celia Sites of Pendleton County was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Ann Harper and Jacob Lewis, per her death certificate, and apparently residing with her father in the 1880 census where she appears as Frances C., as posted in other messages of this thread. The 1900 and 1910 censuses, where she appears as Arcelia F., include all the living children of Celia and her husband Aaron Isaac Moyers, including the eldest Benjamin H. Moyers, who according to his World War I draft registration was born 12 February 1893 and resided at Mouth of Seneca on 5 June 1917, married with 2 children. This Celia resided in Pendleton County until after the 1920 census--she was enumerated in the 1930 Grant County, WV, census and died 7 September 1944 at rural Streby, Grant County. Although only distant cousins of mine, this family gets more interesting all the time. The following is based upon marriage and death records, etc., but the footnotes do not copy easily. Please let me know if you wish specific citations for any of these items. Celia's oldest sister, Hannah Christena Sites, was born 28 May 1855, Pendleton County, Virginia, the daughter of Job and Mary A. Sites. She married Jacob Lewis, a widower, on 27 November 1872 in Randolph County, West Virginia. Hannah C. Lewis died 26 July 1878 from consumption in Pendleton County where she was born. She was 28, the wife of Jacob Lewis and daughter of Job A. and Mary Sites. A son of Hannah and Jacob Lewis, aged 3 days, died 18 July 1878, eight days before his mother. Catharine Lewis, the [first] wife of Jacob Lewis, died 1869 in Grant County, West Virginia, aged 25, from "scare and miscarriage," the daughter of Jesse and M. Keysimor. Their unnamed son died from "abortion." Catharine (Keysimor) Lewis was a sister to Jonas Kisamore, the second husband of Hannah's aunt Hannah Harper. Jacob Lewis, a widower aged 30, married the third time to Phebe J. Hedrick, aged 23, on 12 February 1880 in Pendleton County. As his fourth wife, Jacob Lewis, a widower aged 46, ma! rried Jane Thompson, aged 33, on 6 December 1891 in Pendleton County. Jacob Lewis and Mrs. Jacob (Jane) Lewis are buried in the John Thompson Cemetery, south of Riverton, Pendleton County, but no dates are given on their markers. [Transcription in the PC Grave Register--I have not viewed the stones.] On 26 March 1888 Jacob Lewis conveyed to James P. Sites his interest in the land conveyed to his wife Hannah Christena by Johnson Sites, guardian for the heirs of Job A. Sites, deceased. Thus two months after her mother's death, the oldest child of Mary "Polly" (Harper) Sites, now orphaned with a household of younger siblings, married her youngest sister's father. The women in Jacob's life certainly did not fair well. There must be a story behind the "scare" with the mis-carriage of Catharine. One can only wonder if it would now be diagnosed as post-partum depression. Nedra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Keep in mind that Mary aka Polly died in 1872 - two years later at the relatively young age of 40 yrs. A Jacob Lewis of a likely age married Phoebe J Hedrick in 1880 (seven or so years after Mary/Polly Harper Sites died) and two daughters are listed in Jacob's household in 1880 including a Francis C b ca 1870. Could Francis C be aka Celia b ca 1871? Since her mother was deceased and her stepmother was new to the household, it could be a working theory. Remember that a child born out of wedlock to a widow carried the widow's deceased husband's surname which is why Celia was nee Sites per the guardian papers. If Frances was aka Celia, Jacob Lewis may have raised her with his surname or it may have just been a mis-understanding by the census taker.
