Author: nbdouglas6138 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/219.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Pendleton Co., Va query about Robert and Elizabeth Douglass. Thank you for your reply about my query. I am thinking but haven't been able to prove that William and Robert are brothers. More information is needed from Pendleton Co, such as a marriage record of Robert and Elizabeth. It is thought that her maiden name was Wood. It would be a terrific help if I could find a record of that marriage. My email address has changed to nbdouglas6138@windstream.net. I would be grateful for any information concerning marriage records. Nancy Douglas Ashland, KY Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [WVPENDLE] Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement inVirginia
    2. Sandra Keltner
    3. To be accurate, the DAR did NOT sponsor the publication of Chalkley's Chronicles. In fact, as an organization, they essentially repudiated it. The DAR had purchased his work but, based on an a scathing evaluation by Thomas Forsythe Nelson, decided against publishing it and voted to give the publication rights to a member, Mrs. Mary S Lockwood, who had worked tirelessly to have the works published through the DAR. (See the preface to Vol. I of the Chronicles). Nelson examined primarily examined Chalkley's work and found 274 errors and [unacceptable] variations in 80 pages selected at random from the 2654 type-written pages and extrapolated that 9,000 such variations would be expected in the whole Writing No. 3. It seems the Judge was indiscriminate in his errors - with the English, Scots-Irish, and Germans suffering alike, although he may have been less familiar with the old German names and probably could not read the several recordings in the German language. Nelson's full report can be found on www.ancestry.com<http://www.ancestry.com/> To Chalkley's credit, I'll say that reading the recordings, even with magnifying glass and computer enhancement, is trying at best. It was a monumental task for one man and, like Mrs. Lockwood, I believe we'd be poorer without access to the work. However, there are reading errors, typing errors, random extraction of names without any seeming reason to select or omit, and, worst of all ,omissions. 1. Re: [WVPENDLE] Maus/Mouse
    2. Sandra Keltner
    3. Sherry - thank you. It seems likely that Adam Carr was the son of Catharine Mouse Carr and the reason he's listed as an heir. It was unusual for a single woman to travel to marry (particularly the first time) and it was even a legal requirement at a later date that she obtain the license to marry in her home county (although she could use the license in another county if she so wished) - which is why I asked whether there were relatives in the congregation or whether she may have been previously married. There was, at least, one family named Wolf in the northern portion of Pendleton Co and southern portion of Hardy Co and evidence of a marriage circa this same time. Wolf is not an uncommon surname among the Germans though but perhaps there was some connection. I'm curious about any relationship between the Maus aka Mouse family and the Mallows before Michael Mallow's death in 1772. One of the Maus brothers was documented by Annette Burgert as having lived, for at least a short time, in a village in Alsace only a few miles from where Michael Mallo was born and raised. Then Mallow was the first administrator for the probate of George Mouse who was massacred at Ft. Seybert in 1758 (along with his wife and three of his six children.) - Sandra Keltner ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherry Sowards<mailto:sherrysowardswvrn@yahoo.com> To: WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 6:13 PM Subject: [WVPENDLE] Maus/Mouse I am also a Hodam/Mouse researcher. I looked in the online death index for Pendleton Co. and I didn't find a death record for Anton there. The library in Harrisonburg, VA. would be a good place to check for an obituary. I do have an obituary for his sister Hannah. Parsons Advocate, April 7, 1932: Mrs. Hannah (Miley) Miller, 77, died early this (Wednesday) morning at her home near Hambleton, suffering from complications. Deceased was the wife of Solon P. That is incorrect per Rev. Carolo/Carolus (Carl) Lange's own recordings. He indicates that he performed the marriage on 10 Nov 1767 on his 2nd trip to Virginia. On the same date, in other places in his recordings, he mentions that he was at the Gap on the South Branch on Nov. 10, 1767 for services attended by various members of the families of Busch [Bush], Jung, Kaufmann, Biedert [Peterson], Schmidt, Weiss [Wise] Heyri [Hyre] Deiss [Theiss or Dice] Bossert [Buzzard] Leeck and others. See Maryland German Church Records, Vol. 5 Evangelical Reformed Church, Frederick, Frederick County, [Maryland], 1746-1789, pp. 105-106 for the marriage place and data and supporting evidence of the location of Rev. Lange on 10 Nov 1767 on pp.74 and 88. A complete list of those attending the services and, therefore, likely attending the wedding, can be reconstructed. No other Spiegel is mentioned - and that might beg the question of whether she was a widow or how she might be related to others in attendance that day. Deed 2 Mar 1841 from Pendleton Co.Deedbook 13, pg. 29 Regarding 15a patented to Daniel Mouse (17 Sep 1793 and described as on a head of an East branch of Seneca Creek - some 5 miles W of the bulk of Daniel's land). Sold by a list of the heirs of Daniel Mouse: John Hodam and his wife Phebe (Gallia Co, Ohio); Henry Harper and his wife Elizabeth and Adam Mouse of Randolph Co. (W)Va.; Adam Mouse, Rebecca Mouse, Adam Carr and his wife Susannah, and Amiss (Amos) Mallow and his wife Phebe of Pendleton Co. (W)Va. Jacob Mouse, Joshua Mouse and his wife Mary, George Yocum and his wife Christena, Mary Ann Mouse and Rebecca Mouse of Hardy Co. (W)Va. Some background on the rest of Daniel Mouse's land: Before 28 Aug 1751 Daniel Mouse (Sr. ) died. On that date, the first administrator of the estate, Peter Moser, was appointed. Peter Moser was killed by Indians in March 1758. A guardian, Frederick Easter (possibly aka Frederick Keister) was appointed on 18 Aug 1761 for Daniel's children, Daniel (Jr) and Catharine. On 6 Apr 1769, Daniel Mouse received a patent for 156 acres on the North Fork located about three miles below (northeast of the mouth of) Seneca Creek. At nearly the same time on 14 Jul 1769, Thomas Miller received a patent for 200 acres about 1 mile below (northeast of) Daniel's land on the North Fork. On 12 May 1770, Daniel Mouse received a patent for 27 acres on the south side of the North Fork about 2 miles below Seneca Creek. Daniel and his wife Eve Mouse conveyed this parcel of 27a to Thomas Miller's son George Miller on 17 May 1774 and they also conveyed a portion, probably of the 156 acres to George Miller circa 1774-5. George Miller was likely newly married circa 1774 and, if to the same woman as his widow in 1819, she was called Caty which was a nickname for Catharine. However, most genealogies indicate the Catharine Mouse, sister of Daniel, was married to a Swadley. (Any help proving or disproving any marriage of Catharine Mouse or the maiden name of Cathrine, wife of George Miller b ca 1753 son of Thomas Miller, would also be appreciated). The Millers and Mouse family contiued to own lands near each other on the same section of the NF for at least three generations. On 18 May 1773, Jacob and Barbara Eberman (aka Aberman) conveyed 116 acres to Daniel Mouse. This parcel was located on the river about 1 mile below the mouth of Seneca Creek. In 1815, Daniel received a patent for 30 acres adjoining this parcel on the north and east sides. Daniel had also received a patent for 15 acres in 1793 that did not adjoin his existing lands and was roughly 5 miles away from the other two. He acquired another patent for 25 acres on the west side of the North Fork in 1821 near but not adjoining the 116 acres and 30 acres. All four of these parcels were still in the family's possession in 1849. Adam Carr ended up with much of the land between Mouth of Seneca and the Grant Co. line and several of the Mouse family parcels and I'm working his land holdings in 1849 to help anchor the old Mouse and Abermam grants. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Since there were no slaves recorded in Capt. Henkle's Company, I've only entered the names, the number of tithables, the number of horses, and the number of cattle Capt. Henkle's Company was comprised of North Fork Valley residents south of the Mouth of Seneca. For the rest of the North Fork Valley below (north of ) the Mouth of Seneca in 1783, consult Job Welton's District in Hampshire Co ( that would include the families of Mouse, Miller, other Ebermans, etc). Although the owner listed is most often also the tithable, that is not always the case. For example, a disabled and elderly father might be exempted from tithability by court order but be the owner of the taxed livestock (and often the titled land owner) while an unnamed adult son or son-in-law might the tithable counted in the household. Also, tithablility does not prove land ownership but again that is more often the case than not in this time frame in this area. However, keep in mind that absentee land owners would not show on the tithable list unless they maintained livestock or slaves on the land. The number of horses and cattle can sometimes give an indication of the size of a family although very large numbers more often indicate wealth. Names are spelled as on the list. If the name is not easily recognizable, I've added a more common spelling in brackets. Capt. 3. It's also interesting to note that in the 1920 census where Hattie Harper is listed at a daughter it  names her birthplace and that of her parents as West Virginia.  I n the 1930 census which lists Hattie E Harvey/Harney as a lodger with Ida B Harper the census shows   both her and her parents' birthplace  as 'United States' indicating it was most likely unknown to her (Ida most likely gave the information).  It's early yet in your hunt it appears so hopefully someone with a direct connection or knowledge will respond.  I haven't found anything in the Pendleton County History about any Harveys.  Hang in there - good luck.  Jane - Original Message ----- From: wvpendle-request@rootsweb.com To: wvpendle@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, August 2, 2009 1:02:26 AM GMT -07:00 US/Canada Mountain Subject: WVPENDLE Digest, Vol 4, Issue 79 Today's Topics:    1. Harper b 14 May 1870 d 18 May 1961. Ida B. Harper was the daughter of Simeon Harper and his wife Phoeba Jane (Harper) Harper per her obit 19 May 1961 Cumberland (Md) Evening Times. Per the Pendleton Co. Grave Register, Ida was buried in a small family cemetery in Harper Gap. Her parents are also buried there. In 1977, the land was owned by the estate of Guy Hedrick. Some census data that may be of help - but no explanation as to why Hattie's name is Harper on the 1920 census and Harvey on the 1930 census (or, even, whether there may have been two Hatties of a similar age) and I have no further data on the relationships between Hattie and the Harpers - maybe a Harper or Hedrick researcher can help. Hattie E Harvey, age 18, in 1930 was living with Ida Harper  (age 59) Hattie Harper, age 7, in 1920 was living in Pleasant Harper's household along with his sister Ida Harper - relation indicated is daughter of the head of household (that would be Pleasant Harper)   ----- Original Message -----   From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com<mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>   To: WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com>   Sent: Friday, July 31, 2009 10:36 AM   Subject: [WVPENDLE] any help is greatly appreciated   This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.   Author: ocmsgirl   Surnames:   Classification: queries   Message Board URL:   http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1789/mb.ashx<http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1789/mb.ashx>   Message Board Post:   My father was born to Hattie Harvey and spent the first 5 or 6 years of his life near Seneca Rocks. We recently visited his home place. I'm not sure exactly what the area is called, but just this past weekend, my father returned there for the first time in over 20 years to take his children to the land where he grew up. I know that we took a road across from the 4U Motel, followed it past a small white church at the base of a rock outcropping, and parked at a gate where we continued on foot through a meadow with a dilapitated barn, on an overgrown path to a site at the bottom of some foothills. The home was no longer standing, but my dad vividly remembers details of its layout.   Here's where I need help. My grandmother Hattie was adopted by a woman I believe was named Ida. Harvey is my grandmother's maiden name, but that is absolutely all I know of her family. Oh, and I believe she may have had several brothers and sisters. We do not know who they are or why the children were given up for adoption. My father also knows very little of his paternal heritage, as his father died young and was not active in my dad's upbringing. I believe his surname was Hedrick. He may have been named Harmie (or this could be my dad's grandfather's name). I know that my dad is also somehow related to the Harmons/Harmans of the Seneca Rocks area. My dad is very tight-lipped about his family history, but this may be because he knows very little of it. Do any of these names or circumstances sound familiar? Can anyone help me to piece together my family's past. My brothers and I are very curious about our roots and believe this kind of knowledge would do my dad a world of !  go!    od.
