Johann I and his predecessors were born into slavery and were serfs until he was released and set free in 906 AD by King Ludwig III of Burgandy, at the request of Count Purchartus at Rottorlo. After becoming a freeman he enjoyed the patronage of the Bavarian royalty and was ennobled/knighted and allowed to us the "Von" in his name as a sign of this. Johann I grandson was the first family member to be born a freeman. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What I had was a not-very-good extract. I found a Tunis Mucklewain in Nicholas Co., VA, in 1820. This surname has many variants, McElwain, Macklewayne, etc. Tunis is a variant of the Dutch "Teunis", a diminutive of Antonius. Henry Propts died after 8 Jul 1813, prob. not in Rockingham, as he was a private in Capt. Robert Hooke's Company, 58th Regiment, Virginia Volunteers, which entered service on that date. Thirdly I appoint my wife Barbara and my Son Jacob to be my Excors. This is my Last will and Testament So done in presence of The under Written Witnesses this 18th day of April 1801 Frederick Propts Witnesses Michael Propts Henry Swartly At a Court held for Pendleton County on Tuesday the 1st Day of December 1801 this Translation of the Last Will and Testament of Frederick Probst deceased made by Sebastian Baker was sworn to by the said Baker and Ordered to be Recorded Teste ? Dyer Note that Frederick only named five of his children in his will. I suppose that would mean that those were the ones still at home at the time, but am not sure. Deeds prove that he did have ten children, as it is stated in some that the courts had divided his land into ten equal parts. The best that I have found through various deeds - these are the children not named in his will. Daughters: 1. Mary - married to Henry Propst (Son of oldest Daniel and wife Sophia) 2. Catherine - married to Tunis Mcllwyn (spelling) Sons: 1. John - married to Margaret (lived in Randolph Co.) 2. Henry - died Rockingham Co. in 1813 - married to Elizabeth Kiger (Kizer) 3. Adam - married Rachel Eye Hope this is helpful Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Later history: Jacob Root and Margaret Root sold 94a to Peter Shall and 90a to John Shall 6 Jul 1789. Peter and Rosanna Shall sold his 94a portion to Isaac Harman 4 Aug 1794. John Shall's widow Anna sold his 90a portion to John Bouse 2 Oct 1810 along with two other parcels. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mallowslk19 Surnames: Chalkley Lockwood Nelson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1794.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To be accurate, the DAR did NOT sponsor the publication of Chalkley's Chronicles. In fact, as an organization, they essentially repudiated it. The DAR had purchased his work but, based on an a scathing evaluation by Thomas Forsythe Nelson, decided against publishing it and voted to give the publication rights to a member, Mrs. Mary S Lockwood, who had worked tirelessly to have the works published through the DAR. (See the preface to Vol. I of the Chronicles). Nelson examined primarily examined Chalkley's work and found 274 errors and [unacceptable] variations in 80 pages selected at random from the 2654 type-written pages and extrapolated that 9,000 such variations would be expected in the whole Writing No. 3. It seems the Judge was indiscriminate in his errors - with the English, Scots-Irish, and Germans suffering alike, although he may have been less familiar with the old German names and probably could not read the several recordings in the German language. Nelson's full report can be found on www.ancestry.com To Chalkley's credit, I'll say that reading the recordings, even with magnifying glass and computer enhancement, is trying at best. It was a monumental task for one man and, like Mrs. Lockwood, I believe we'd be poorer without access to the work. However, there are reading errors, typing errors, random extraction of names without any seeming reason to select or omit, and, worst of all ,omissions. Deed Book 19; pp. 257-258. For five shillings, Daniel and Eve sold Michael Miller the full 156 acre patent on 17 May 1774. Per the recording, Daniel and Eve both signed with a mark. Pages 257-258 should be abstracted in Chalkley's on this page but notice it jumps from from pg. 255 to pg. 259. I've checked the 1999 printing of Chalkley's and it is not recorded there so this is not an omission solely from the internet. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/augusta/court/3court53.txt 2) On this page in Chalkley's is a partial abstract of a recording in which a portion of the 156 acres patented to Daniel Mouse was sold pg. 217 (Mills should read Miller): ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/augusta/court/3court54.txt "Page 217.--On North Fork of South Branch, part of 156 acres patented to Daniel Mouse, 6th April, 1769. Delivered: Leonard Miller by order of George Mills, 1st April, 1794." Per the deed recording in the Augusta Co. Deed Book 21, Michael and Barbara Miller sold George Miller 80a of the 156 acres (patented to Daniel Mouse) for 50 pounds on 21 Nov 1775. Michael signed with a "M" and Barbara signed with a mark.
