Markers were either wooden crosses or field stones crudely carved. The Fayette County cemeteries were transcribed twice ca. 1930s-1940s (the Washington Cemetery was read in 1950s) and these records should be at Carnegie Library in Washington CH and also have been microfilmed by LDS. Tombstones disappeared between the first reading and the second one although more stones were also located on the re-reading so both lists should be checked. I have not worked the Bush family in some time and never in the depth that I'd worked the Mallows. In 1782 and 1783 when the southern 2/3 or so of Pendleton Co was under Rockingham's jurisdiction, Lewis Bush is listed on the PP tax records along with Michael and Leonard in Robert Davis' district. (Another group of Bushes - George, John, Jacob and Adam are also listed but likely located in a different section of Davis' district). In 1789, Lewis Bush is not listed on PP Tax list in the lower district of the newly formed Pendleton Co nor is there another adult male in the households of either Michael or Leonard. It's possible Lewis was residing in a SIL's household but that needs more work or, less likely but possible, that Lewis was exempted from PP taxes due to severe physical disablility. But, there is also an inconsistency on the land tax records - Lewis is listed in 1787 (Rockingham) with 90a but Leonard is listed in 1789 with what appears to be the same 90a. These parcels seem to have been part of an old Moser grant of 190a which were actually later recorded (1793) as sold to Michael Bush as 75a and Leonard (not Lewis) as 115a. It's possible that the recording of Lewis' name is an error when Leonard was meant but, in light of Lewis not being on the PP tax list in 1789, it would normally be an alert to look for the death of Lewis between ca 1788 while that portion of Pendleton was under Rockingham Co. Lewis' 23a parcel near Reed's Creek, granted in 1791, was warranted 27 Nov 1781 and surveyed 15 Jun 1790 but that alone does not mean he was alive after he applied for the warrant - once the process was started in a given name, it continued in that name unless there was sale before the issuance of the grant. There are several examples of posthumous grants in the Pendleton Co. area (including the 190a sold to Bush brothers by Adam Moser). These are inconsistencies from a period of change of counties which may be the explanation but it's probably worth considering that Lewis may have died much earlier than is commonly accepted. I'll try to do further research in the PP tax lists for Pendleton Co to confirm whether Lewis or Eva, as widow, appear between 1790 and 1802 when they purportedly left for Ohio. There may also be something in the few Rockingham Co. records that still exist but I don't have immediate access to those films which are primarily unindexed court notes and very tedious reading. I don't know what evidence other researchers used to place Lewis in Ohio so, if anyone knows, or you come across that evidence, please let me know. If anyone else has worked on this, please let us know. All in all, it's quite interesting. - Sandra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'll pay particular attention when researching, for Magdalena and anything else on Eve Hyer. I found another cemetery last week not far from the Bush cemetery and there were a great many Hyers, Hires, & Coils in there. That's another reason I was a bit confused about Eve. I just checked my information and have that Henry Mallow was married to a Magdalena Miller in 1780 in August Co. I can't find the reference for that right now, but when I do I'll let you know. I am a descendent of Henry Mallow, thru his daughters Sarah and Margaret. Henry is a gggrandfather on my mother's side (Hedrick,Kesner)thru Margaret and he's also a ggggrandfather on my dad's side thru Sarah (Borror, Yankee, Ketterman). Henry's brother, Adam, is my connection to the Bush family. I find all this so fascinating since I've only lived in Ohio since 1967 and had no clue I had any relatives here, past or present. I'm curious as to whether the wife of Henry Mallow (b. 1758), Magdalena b. 1760, was a daughter of Lewis Bush and Catharine Stingley. Lewis is said to have had a daughter Magdalena but she is usually cited as having been born ca late 1740's (too early). However, nothing else is known of her. Lewis and Catharine Stingley Bush's daughter Sarah md Henry Mallow's older brother Adam Mallow and it would not have been terribly unusual for two brothers to have married sisters of another family. I don't make this a postulation -it's just an unresolved matter and I'd be most grateful if you'd let me know if you ever come across anything that bears on what happened to Lewis' daughter Magdalena. The big problem is the question of where Lewis & Eva are buried. Most of what I've seen says he died in 1802 in Pendleton Co, but I can't find any record of it. And then I found of record that says a Lewis is buried in the Bush family cemetery that I visited last week. I couldn't find the grave. Eva is not buried there. I believe her to be buried in another cemetery where Bush's are buried, but I'm going to the county library and/or genealogic society in Washington Court House as soon as the weather is better. I only live about 22 mi. west of there. Also, there is an elderly lady (65 )(Martha Bush) that lives really close to the Bush family cemetery in a gorgeous old house that was built in 1910. I'm considering writing her to see if she's related to the ones in the cemetery and if she'd talk to me. Would you like to know of anything interesting/enlightening that I may find? It will take a while for me to get this accomplished, but I'm willing to share. Thanks again--Sue Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. That is supported by the disposition of one of Lewis' properties in Pendleton County. All the Bush properties - for Lewis, Michael, Leonard, and John - were sold in Pendleton County near the time of their removal to OH (Leonard stayed longer than the others) and I only know of one Bush who remained in the county although there may have been others there under married names as well as some who went to other counties in now WV. This link may help, although there are some errors: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hcpd/norman/BUSH.htm I descend from Catharine Bush Mallow, dau of Leonard Bush and Catharine Stingley, who moved on to Ohio. Catharine was the wife of George Mallow Sr. They remained in Pendleton County. Her death notice reads: Died in Pendleton Co, VA, July 19 [1868], sister Catharine Mallow, aged 82 yrs, 1 month, and 12 days. She was a faithful member for many years, and was much beloved. Funeral service by the writer from Heb. 4: 8-10. The funeral service was given by Elder Jacob Wine of Virginia. It seems her grave is unmarked. Some of her husband's family members were buried in what had been the cemetery of Mallo's Dutch (Deutsch) Church and is now Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Kline (Pendleton Co.). Her husband owned several parcels of land in the county but considered his Walnut Bottom land his homeplace. It's possible she buried there. 1. [WVPENDLE] Waldrons of Pendleton
    2. I have Waldron questions, but not answers. My great(2)-grandfather Warden COX was born in 1823 and died in Pendleton County, West Virginia, 28 January 1883 at age 60 years 10 days. His death record lists his parents as Robert and Catherine Cox. There is a marriage record dated 21 May 1822 in Pendleton County for Robert COCK and Catherine WALDREN. I believe these are the parents of Warden Cox. (1) I don't know whether this Robert Cock/Cox is the same Robert Cock who with Rachel Cock appears in Pendleton land records 1798-1804. (Based on other land records I suspect but haven't proved that Rachel was a PRINE.) (2) I don't know anything about Catherine Waldren's background. Someone has suggested that she was a widow and that the name Waldren was from her first husband. (3) I haven't found any further record of Robert and Catherine Cox/Cock in Pendleton County. 3. Hello - My wife has this family in her direct line - related to the Fisher family of Pendleton Co.. I cannot answer your question directly, but I assume Ulrich, Sr. is a brother to Jacob, Sr.. Here are my notes on Jacob, the elder. Came to America 5 Sep 1750, to VA in June 1763 Surname sometimes spelled Coonrod or Cunrodt Conrad Family Bible Swiss data comes from Trissa Haefling, Warren, OH by Jeff Carr Deed records Pendleton Co., WVA, pub. by Rick Toothman, especially 2 tracts on North Mill Creek, per Deed Book O, p 225 24 Oct 1789 which property was passed on through the family via George's wife Elizabeth Conrad, dau of Jacob, Sr. There are several other deed records in Toothman's book that pertain to our Fisher & Conrad families. Property on South Fork Mountain, Hardy Co., WVA Henckel Genealogical Bulletin, Vol 10, pub. 1979 Correspondents - C. Donald Fisher, Jeff Carr, & Mary Ann Wamsley Becky Lucas (rlucas@neo.rr.com) posted a query on WVPENDLE@rootsweb.com on 22 Mar 2007 asking if anyone knew about a dau of Jacob & Svena named Mary Conrad who is said to have had an illigitimate dau named Margaret Bartlett, this per the Pendleton Co. list. This Margaret Bartlett m. my ancestor Thomas Collett. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, as extracted from the original court records of Augusta Co., VA 1745-1800, Abstracts of Wills Augusta Co., VA, Will Book V, Additional Members of the Executive Committee, p. 143 & 409 - "Jacob Conrad's will - to son Jacob, testator's dwelling place; to dau Barbara, the place she lives on (wife of Charles Hedrick); to dau Elizabeth, the place she lives on, bought of Christopher Thompson and James Skidmore, wife of George Fisher; to dau Mary Conrad's two children, Margaret Barlet, John Clifton, land bought from Samuel Caplingers; to Jonas Friend, a debt to be paid; son to sign his three sisters their deeds by his Earship. Teste: Wolerey Conrad, John Skidmore, George Kile. Proven 19 March 1776 (Translation by Geo. Carpetnter) by the witnesses. Jacob Conrad qualified administrator." Sandra Pope, Project Manager of the Ft. Seybert Heritage Educational Assn., says her project is tracking old cemeteries in Pendleton Co., WVA., and I quote - "The Grave Register, Pendleton Co., WV, 1977, p. 89, states that Jacob came from Switzerland and settled on South Branch in 1763. He is buried on land he owned identified in the GR (Grave Registration) as Old Conrad Cemetery #21. There are 202 graves in this cemetery. Only 15 are identified in the GR." This e-mail came through on the WVPENDLE@rootsweb.com listing 9/3/07. Sandra Pope, sent another e-mail dated Sep 6, 2007 - "The Conrad names that were visible in 1977 were: Jacob, Sr., Jacob, Jr., Hannah Bogard Conrad, Barbara Propst Conrad, Anney Conrad who died at birth, Jane Conrad (no information), Ulrich Conrad, Sarah Currence Conrad, and John Benjamin 1844-1864, son of Laban & Rachel Bible Conrad. The other names listed are Elias Hammer, James Blewitt, Elias Blewitt, Phebe Blewitt, George Blewitt, with the note that the last three Blewitts are children of Charles J. & Deniza Hammer Blewitt.
