Actually, the Red King is not the source for the surname Rexroth. German Emperors Otto I, II, and III were known as the Red Kings because of their red hair and beards. They reigned during the 1300s. The family name during that era is seen in records as von Recherode. The Rexroth spelling appears centuries later as the result of an evolution of spelling. A son of mine is researching Rexroad ancestry in Germany and (so far) has traced them back to 1230. The name von Recherode and an alternative spelling von Rechenroth are believed to stem from the town of Recherode from where the knight Dietrich von Recherode came. The word von means from. Over fifty different spellings of the name have been found in German records. I think it was Nedra who used to remind us that genealogy without documentation is mythology. The Red King thing falls into that category. If anyone is truly interested in the sources for what I have said here, please contact me off-list and I will gladly provide them. Well, yes, I am a distant cousin and direct descendant of Zachariah Rexroad and Phoebe Sinnett in Ritchie County which was Rexrode in Pendleton Co and Rexroth in Germany. I have seen your book in the Parkersburg WV library. Claude B. Rexroad, now deceased, got a copy of the part of the Deutsches Geschlecterbuch (German Genealogy Book) with the Rexroth section that ran it back on the German side. That should be well known. I am probably the same one ... transplanted to Texas so I'm staying here where it is warm and there is some economy left. Cokeley What's strange is that Rexroth is named for the "Red King" as they worked for him. From a couple of other royal links I have found on my own side, Otho the Red himself is probably one of my ancestors. My Foster/Forster side is from S.W. PA and earlier in the Harrisburg area ... no connection otherwide, but I'm stuck there. ---- Bill Rexroad <rexroad3@cox.net> wrote: > John Cokely Foster is a name that is stuck in the back of my mind. Hi all, I administer a list -- one that's dormant for now -- but even so, I get notices from Rootsweb every few days, telling me that there are messages that need to be attended to. I log in at Rootsweb to where they hold the messages, and I review them, and they are all inevitably spam. I check off some boxes, and they are deleted, keeping the spam from being sent to the list. This seems to be very effective, as none of them have gotten through. Whoever is administering this list, should also get these notifications. Their subject is "1 [or 3, etc.] XXXX moderator request(s) waiting." The sender is mailman-bounces@rootsweb.com. If I don't attend to them, they now seem to automatically expire, which I think must be a new development. Spammers are a crafty lot, so it may be that they have worked out a way around this. But so far, it has worked very well. Hopefully this one that got through to this list was just a little glitch. I too am a RootsWeb list admin - of over 2 dozen lists. The messages caught in the spam filter are identified on the admin tools page (where Bonnie describes 'checking some boxes') as "Post sent by a non-member to a members-only list." Nedra explained earlier, the email address of a list subscriber was faked. Therefore, RootsWeb's filters would NOT identify the message as being from a 'non-member'. The only method to stop 'spoofed' emails is to moderate the list. Every message would have to be approved by the list admin before it was distributed to the subscribers. Moderating an 'open list' in which all subscribers are free to post is no small thing. It's normally used as a means to shut down flame wars and is not intended to be used to control the occasional spam. Honestly, how many spams has this list received? I've been a member for at least 5 years and don't remember any others...unless it was truly horrible, there is no reason for me to remember such an inconsequential item. Rootsweb looks at the sender's email address on the from line and when it matches a subscriber, the message is sent. I do not think that Rootsweb tries to screen for message content. That would be impossible. How many times have we had books appear here that were for sale and of interest to our subscribers? Dollars appear with invites to family reunions. But Nedra, that doesn't explain how this sort of thing gets through what I thought was a screening process by rootsweb or some administrative function. -------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 01 Mar 2010 14:32:53 -0800 To: wvpendle@rootsweb.com From: Nedra Dickman Brill <ndbrill@comcast.net> Subject: [WVPENDLE] Email spoofs Thank you Karen for letting us know.
