Does anyone know when the Hedrick reunion in Pendleton county is? Thanks, Rebecca Lucas rlucas@neo.rr.com
Dear Nedra or others, Would you also have a Solomon GEORGE md Susanna BUCKBEE 21 april 1844 listed in the book? I am really curious what spelling will show up, it almost looks like Solomon and Eliza GEORGE may have been brother and sister and they married John and Susanna BUCKLEE or BUCKBEE who may have been brother and sister. Either way John & Eliza BUCKBEE (or so it appears) on the 1850 census Hardy county page 61 was living next door to James & Elizabeth GEORGE. Is anyone researching BUCKLEE or BUCKBEE? Maybe they were from Hardy county! Serving as a bondsman did not prove a relationship, but usually Solomon would have been Eliza's father, brother, or uncle. As I said, this by itself is not proof but can offer a clue. I have never found another record of a John Buckbee, although he might be some of the family of this name that went to Mineral County. Or, perhaps he really was Bucklee. I have been searching for ancestors for 45 years since an 8th grade school project was to write an autobiography and one chapter was to be on my ancestors. In between I have raised 5 children, managed an optometric office for 20 years and spent the last 10 years helping my husband start a business. I am now my own person. My interest in Pendleton County is on behalf of my husband. His great-grandmother was always known as Jennie Oats. She is a puzzle. In 1880 she was living with Samuel(43) and Mary Ann McCluster(42), with the name of S E Puffenbarger, age 6, adopted. They were in Lewis Co. West Virginia in the Freeman Creek District. All had been born in West Virginia as well as their parents. Only the grandfather 's parents had been born in Ireland. This family, which also had an adopted son, Rhiner Franklin (age 17) and a father Franklin McCluster(75) west west and settled in Oberlin, Kansas. Jennie was raised there. She went to work in McCook, Nebraska where she met Richard Carroll to whom she was married. In 1900, they were living in the city of Oberlin, Kansas. Only the parents are listed, but now they have a new adopted son, Guy Moffat, who is also from Virginia When she applied for her marriage license she put down her parents as Benjamin Oats and Elizabeth Puffenbarger. Her death certificate says her name was Sarah Jennie, but her son didn't know her parents names as he put down McCluster. Said she was born in Weston, West Virginia. I was there in the court house and found no Oates or Puffenbargers. In looking through census records, Puffenbarger seems to be a common name in Pendleton Co. at that time so this is a long stag. Sorry, this is so long. I am wondering if she was illegitimate or what. Anyway, would like some help. Elizabeth Puffenbarger is very common the in 1870' and 1880s in your county. [Job & Samanda Nelson who appear on the same page in the 1880 census.] Read below, but also by comparing the groom's father's initial to other names on the page, it cannot be a J--the other J's all have descenders and this one does not. In 1870 James and Isabelle have their own household while Union Township, Dwelling 50: James Bible 54 Susannah 49 children include James W. aged 10. [still not old enough for the Civil War!] This James W. Bible, born ca. 1859-1860, does not appear in the published 1880 Pendleton County census. The above shows that the James W. Bible who married Isabelle Nelson is indeed the son of Philip and Sarah, not James and Susan[nah]. The differences in ages helps to sort them out. Nedra
