    2. Nancy Anwyll
    3. Hello, What is the best source for finding the PROPST family tree? Is there anything available on the Internet? My great, great grandmother was Delilah Propst. She married John Eye in Pendleton County, (West) Virginia about 1852. She, John, and several children moved to Jones County,Iowa about 1871. I would like to find information on her parents, grandparents, etc. Thanks for any suggestions! Nancy Anwyll Nanwyll@Patriot.net

    1. Re: Pendleton County Mail List
    2. I'll be happy to introduce myself as I'm sure I have connections in Pendleton, WV. If I've got the wrong Pendleton, please don't let me ramble on. My name is Larry James Shreve and I hail from Pennsylvania. My father is Larry Leroy Shreve, his father Max Ross Shreve, his was Clay(Celius) Shreve, his was Daniel Young Shreve, his was Daniel Shreve and his was the patriarch as I know was John Shreve. John was married to Eliza Platt. I've done some research but unfortunately am not wise on where to look. I guess my quest at this point is to find if there really is a connection in my line to American Indian ancestry. It has always been a story in the family and it's likely appearance shows itself occassionally in past features. Daniel Young Shreve in describing himself in an application for a Veteran Pension from the Civil War said he had black eyes, 5 ft 10 in, black hair and dark skin. I thought that odd but it substantiated my great-aunts description of him as very Indian-like. His parents I believe were Daniel Shreve and Lucinda Weese. Right now, this is one of my higher priorities to substantiate. Anyway, I know my roots are there in WV and hoping to gain more info. Thanks for your help............

    3. Does anyone know exactly what the Homestead Exemption was in Virginia in the 1870s? I've seen several deeds in Rockingham Co., VA where the farmer took the Homestead Exemption, then listed farm implements & livestock & their values. It's very interesting. But I've never seen a definition of what this meant. Thanks for any suggestions on where to look it up, too. Pat Ritchie

    2. Dear Jhana: This is probably not a connection, but, couldn't help but notice the closeness in names. My wife's ancestor, Missouri Florence Wright 1868-1916 married T. Waitman "Willie" Williams in 1889 in Harrison Co, WV, not TOO far from Pendleton Co, WV. Probably just close.....Lyle Corder

    3. Dear Nedra, After reading your description regarding the Upper Tract, I wondered if you could help me out with some directions. I would like to visit the region my 4xg grandfather, Sam Day owned between 1786-1805. According to Sims Index, Sam Day was awarded 150 acres on the North Fork of the Upper Tract at Clay Lick in Pendleton Co. I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide. Also, would the library and courthouse in Franklin have any records around 1780-1800 on property owners in this region?? 3. I hope my info helped. You are correct with the fact that Leonard came to Roane with the Boggs and the Vandales. I have some stories, a drawn representation of Leonard's log cabin, some journal entries, and an interesting story of the Drennin family. Let me know if you would like this information, I would be glad to share all I have. My book also lists the families Barlett, Bee, Boggs, Cain, Camp, Daniell, Drennen, Ferrell, Goff, Vandale, & Wiseman. I also have a story writen by Phillip Simmons Bee, regarding the Spring Creek Farm, and a Biography of Thurman Allan Simmons, if anyone is interested. Leslie

    3. Do you have the book "History of Pendleton County" by Oren F. Morton I have been looking for that book, but cannot find it. Do you have information on Leonard Simmons at all? He is suppose to be listed in the book with his wife Mary Vandale.

    3. I have a family book on the descendants of Leonard Simmons and Mary Vandale. And some possible information on their ancestors. This is the information I have: Mortons History of Highland County, VA shows that Nickolaus and Leonhart Simon located in that county about 1753. By 1757 and 1759 Leonard Simon and Michael Simon, sons of Nickolas Simon, located in Pendleton County. These men were native born Germans. SIMON PENNSYLVANIA NOTES said on Nov 9, 1738 ship ? arrived at Philadelphia. Jacob Simon, age 27 aboard. Oct 12, 1741 ship "Friendship" arrived in Philadelphia. Jacob Simon, age 21 aboard. Oct 7, 1751 Ship ? a Leonard Simon arrived in Philadelphia. 1753 first Virginia Simon record, Leonard and Nicholas Simon enter land in Augusta County near Henry Hawes. 1761 South Fork, Leonard Simon renting farm from Henry Horse 1762 Nicholas Simon patent 145 acres South Fork (Augusta Deed Bk 21 pg 210) >From GenForum Query response: Leonard (Leonhart) Simon arrived in Philadelphia Oct 7, 1751 on ship "Janet" married Mary A. ? they had a son Leonard Jr. b. 1758 Pendleton d. 1822 married Catherine Smith in 1797. They had a son Leonard b. 1806, baptized Jan 1, 1807. This has not been confirmed, but supposedly came from the book, A Compilation of Simmons Descendants of Pendleton County, W.V. pub. 1988 by Walter Eye's Also Simmons Information Exchange gave me this possible information: John Nicholas Simmons & Anna Margaret had a son Leonard b. 1775 Augusta, VA. Another book that it said to be of help but is not out of print is: History of Pendleton County, W.V. by Oren F. Morton This is all of the information I have on links to his ancestors. Does this help you at all or just confuse you. Let me know what you think. Thanks for your information. I'll look for the Niday and Arnott families. Leslie Ray

    3. Hello Una, Have you received an answer to this question yet? I have three different names, and are not sure of the names, even with the marriage records book that was printed. The names I have are Mary Ann Harper md. 23 June 1826, Naomi Teter md. 5 Dec 1826, and Annie Teter, no date, but nine children. If you want, I can send you snail mail what I have, and the sources for the information. 3. I am researching Bowdridge Warner Sr. who married Susanna Hill. and Roxanna Warner who married Jonathan Hill. The Warners were born in NY and the Hills were born in RI. Bowdridge and Susanna had 6 children. One of which was named Bowdridge Warner Jr. who married Ruth Rayburn. Bowdridge Sr. was born around 1792/93. Do you have any information on these Warners? Thanks for your help. Leslie Ray

    3. Koren and Una, Edith Lanning's book "Thomas Bland of Pendleton County" shows that Enoch married Naomi Teter 5 Dec 1826 and had 2 children who are named in the will of their grandfather Joel Teter. He then had a son James B. Bland ca. 1834 (1860 census) by Catherine Lambert, but no record of a marriage for this pair. Edith does not give any source for the placement of this child. Enoch married Mary Ann Harper 23 June 1836 (not 1826). They had nine children. There is no mention of Annie Teter, however, Naomi might have nicknamed or confused as Annie. 3. Pam, Reed's Creek starts ca. Hwy 33 west of Franklin, flows NE and empties into South Branch at Upper Tract. It follows a county road called Upper Reeds Creek Road. There is also a Lower Reeds Creek road west from Ruddle that mets up with Reeds Creek. It is on a mill run but this was a flour mill, not a saw mill. One of the Hinkle farms, owned by several generations, is at Judy Gap on North Fork. There were also Hinkle farms in Germany Valley on the road between Riverton and Seneca Caverns. Not sure about the Saw Mill Creek, but do suspect it truly ran a saw mill. In what district do they appear in the censuses? You might try the US Geodetic Survey site on the Internet.
