    2. Earlier I posted- My gg grandfather, Patrick Raines, b. July, 10, 1870 in Pendleton Co., d. Sept. 11, 1933 in Pendleton Co. married Ida Catherine Hedrick, b. July 20, 1875 in Hightown, Highland, VA. They had 3 children, Flodia, Media and Ocie (died young). They were divorced and then he married my gg grandmother Laura Lambert. After the divorce she lived on the top of the mountain where they lived with her parents I think and she later remarried. Is anyone familiar with this family? I found a birth record on the LDS records site and it listed parents as Jonas Hedrick and Mary Cook. Does anyone have this information? Jennifer

    3. I really hate to criticize, but forget about Walter Eye's book. It is full of terrible mistakes. As one who has worked on the Simmons line for over 25 years, it is simply awful. Recently what has always been considered the line based on the Kellog papers has been proven not to be right. I will look thru what I have, but I am not descended thru Leonard's line, but I don't know about the one you are talking about. Morton's History is also a mess on the Simmons line. Just how all the early ones are related is still not proven by any means. As it stands now, the Simmons are really a brick wall in Pendleton and not proven to be from any particular place previous to that. One of the problems is that in the early papers they often went by John George, John Nicholas, John Michael, and used the first or middle name depending on their mood, I guess. I do know I have my line from John of the will in the early 1830's and the land records appear to make him a son of Nicholas. I did think that someone out there has the Leonard Simmons Sr. line as I think I was shown it once when I was still struggling with mine. Just how he is related to the others is not proven. My advice on the Simmons family, start with the proven and go step by step from there and do not leap ahead unless you have a proofs. They are hard to come by. I had a lot of luck using proven siblings when I did not have any proof on my direct ancestor. I must have deleted the dates on Leonard that you think came from Greenbrier. Would you send me what you have on him as to dates, wife, and children's names and I will see what I can do. Jean

    3. Thanks for your response cousin. I have printed your data and I will compare it with what I have now. I have read the County histories but I don't think that I have seen the book written by Walter Eye. The history of Leonard and Mary of Roane County is very good but I can't seem to match up the dates of Leonard in the two counties. These books indicate that Leonard came to Roane County with the Boggs and the Vandels by way of Greenbriar County. There may be some good information available from people working on those families. I have in my files the names of people working on the family history but they are old and I have not been able to arouse much interest. Surely someone has found answers to the questions about our family and if we keep looking we might find them.
