Here are maps of Virginia and W. Virginia from Rand McNally from 1895. They are LARGE files, about 1.6 Megabites. Once they have loaded all the way in your browser you casn save them as a jpg file to view whenever you want. What is nice about them is that it shows railroads for the timeframe plus towns that existed then. Virginia http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/states/1895/va_1895.jpg W. Searching for name of parents of Mary E. Kimble, born about 1844 and married Daniel Y. Shreve in 1864. Anyone? Carren Bragg
For whatever it is worth, my Great grandfather John Warner first married Rebecca Shreve on May 18, 1837. This Rebecca, who is apparently not the one referenced in your note, was b. March 20, 1820, my records, which are based on hand-me-down information that I have not verified, say in Randolph County. She died at Knawls Creek, Braxton Co. April 26, 1862 and is buried in the Knawls Creek Church Cemetery. My ancestors were children of John Warner's second wife so I really haven't tried to develop much on this Rebecca. Hi Karl, my name is Jim Hedrick from Nebraska. Upon reading your letter, a couple of things stood out. My ancestors owned land in the South Fork of Pendleton Co. Also my grandfather, Adam Hedrick was in Co F 62d Virginia Infantry participating in battles in and about the Shenandoah Valley, Richmond, and Gettysburg under the command of Gen Early. He was captured there and finished out the war in Camp Chase, Ohio as a POW. Unfortunately I have no letters, pictures or anything of interest, with the exception of the daily muster showing Adam Hedrick present as a POW. If you should come across anything on the Hedricks please contact me. I'll do the same in your search. Trying to get a handle on the Botkins of Pendleton County. They were apparently there from about 1796- 1850 or more. Here is what I have but very unsure of. James Bodkin, b.abt 1830 to John and Mary Armstrong Bodkin. John Bodkin, b. abt 1803 to John and Elizabeth Vint Bodkin. John Bodkin,b. abt 1770 to John and Mary Bodkin. Before that they seemed to be in Highland County. Was that the county that Pendleton came from? Would appreciate any clues. Thank you. Gail Brevard,NC

To Nanette Styer: Camp Chase was a Civil War camp in Columbus, Ohio. It has a burial ground still maintained today where many Confederate soldiers are buried. It was the induction point for many Ohio soldiers. Maureen
Levi Vance had two wives; apparently both named Mary Ann (I wonder about that.) The first wife's name was Mary Ann Hartman,. I don't know who her parents were. From this marraige these children were born: Robert, b. 1880 m. Rosa Davis, Henry C. b. 1883 m. Bessie Eye (Whitmer, WV) , Wilbur (Randolph County, WV) Stella, b. July 4, 1888, m. Edward Nelson (Randolph County), Arnold (Whitmer) m. Flossie Dolly, Asa b. 1893 m. Florence Morrall, Clarence m. Nellie Simmons. I don't have dates for their children but I do remember some of the names that you mentioned. I will hve to check and see who Nell Simmons parents were. Levi's father was Solomon Vance and his mother was Mary Mullenax. His brothers and sisters were: Edward H. Vance, William Perry "Ball" Vance (who was my great grandfather), John A. Vance, Evan Vance, Phoebe C. Vance, Martha E. Vance, George B. Vance, Ken Vance. I do not have all of the info on these people at present but hope to have it by next summer. His second wife was Mary Ann Lewis and from that marriage was born Coy Vance and Cleda Vance who married Ervin Kisamore. Hope this helps. Bonnie Vance Miller
According to what little I have - (courtesy Morton, PC Grave Registry, and several censuses), The Levi Vance you are looking for is the second Levi, son of Solomon. I don't have a birth date for him but his age of 52 in the 1910 census is consistent with your date of 1859. Morton lists Levi as having two wives. The 1910 census confirms the two marriages for Levi Vance. Morton lists Levi's first wife as Mary S. Hartman (the mother of Clarence); the second Mary A. Lewis (married abt 1908). In the 1910 census, Clarence is 14 and a boarder with Sheridan Long (age 22). Sheridan was married to Mary J. Vance who was the daughter of Evan C. Vance and the granddaughter of Solomon Vance. Hope it helps. Gene Phares >>> "Jim and Virginia West" <vwest@eohio.net> 09/08/99 09:06AM >>> Hi: This is my first time writing for information and help. I am trying to verify Clarence Vance's parent. I keep coming up with two Levi Vances. One was born Jan. 23, 1855 and the other was born in 1859. The first was the son of Hiram Vance and the second was the son of Solomon Vance. Can anyone tell me which Levi is the father of Clarence? By the way, Clarence was married to Nellie Simmons. Thanks!
