Hi all! I am researching the Helmick and Landes names in Pendleton County. I am in search of someone who may be able to do some lookups for me. First, I am looking for grave registers/records to find the cemeteries that my ancestors are buried in. Second, does anyone have access to the 1920 Pendleton County Census that could look for a family for me? Any help, suggestions, etc. will be greatly appreciated! Kim Fairbanks kfairbnks@aol.com
Good Morning Betteann, Can you tell me the date and place where you found the bond of guardianship for Jacob Dunkle over Margaret Janes. This would confirm the genealogy compiled by George W. Janes, gr-grandson of William Janes that Jacob Dunkle married Eleanor Janes. We find Jacob on the 1820 Fayette Co. census, right age, Also Dills History of Fayette says Jacob was there in 1811. It is my belief that Jacob and Eleanor was the drawing card for the sibling families of Eleanor, William, Edward and Elizabeth (Janes) Waybright to move to Fayette Co. OH about 1820. Thank you for your input. Evelyn Vohland
Hi Koren, Thanks for the info.. I've been thinking about the Highland Co. list but need to get caught up first. This computer gives me fits. ggg (It's prob. just me not knowing it very well.) Helen
Dear Helen, The Cowpasture is in the McDowell area of Highland County, VA, and maybe in the area that was Pendleton Co., (W)Va until 1847 when Highland County was formed from Pendleton and Bath Counties. There is a Highland County list you might want to join. Helen, The Cowpasture I referenced is in Pendleton County, West Virginia. Any information I have would be in that county. Helen: I grew up in Webster County. There was many Morton's. My 12th grade teacher was Maime Morton for Democracy. her sister Mrs. Heinz was my 10th grade biology teacher. They lived on Morton Hill. James "Tiger" Morton was a very popular individual. They are still there. Joe Harris
Hi, Read your note to Sharon. I'm interested in the name, Edward Morton of Hunterton, NJ, that had land near Cowpasture. Is this Cowpasture in NJ??? I've an Edward Morton (1764-1852) that was in Webster Co. W.Va. in the early 1800's. He came from Highland or Rockingham. (I think.) - Can't track him any farther. Thanks for any help that might come from anyone. Helen
Don in Kansas, There's a whole mess a Davis' in the index of this book on Pendleton Co. Can you give me some first names?? Betteann
Hi bob! Didn't find anything on who Jacob DUNKLE married. He might have some connection with a JANES family, because I found a bond showing him as the guardian of Margaret JANES, infant orphan of William JANES, deceased. This mention and the mention in the will are the only two on this person. Oops! Just noticed a reference to Jacob and ELENOR DUNKLE in 1809. No maiden name for Elenor tho!!!!! But at least that's a date to work back from. Good Luck.........Betteann
Betteann, In your 23 Oct posting you refer to the WILL of George DUNKLE, Sr. dated 1802 listing a son, Jacob. Can you tell me who JACOB married? Thanks for any assistance on Jacob. Evelyn Vohland
Betteann; Thanks for taking the time to look these names up for me. It was very nice of you. Errol and Valerie, I found just one reference to your names, and you might already know this information. 27 May 1802-Will of George DUNKLE, Sr. People mentioned in this will are: sons George and Jacob. Daughters Mary Gragg, ELIZABETH HOOVER, Barbara HOOVER. A deceased son John and John's heirs, Elizabeth, Margaret and John. If you didn't have Elizabeth's maiden name, it seems that it would be DUNKLE. Also she and her sister Barbara could have married brothers since they have the last name. Hope this provides a few more clues for you to continue your research. If you decide you want more information on Elizabeth's Dunkle family the index lists others by that name. also deedbook lists land for a DUNKLE as early as 1789. Happy Hunting!!!!...................Betteann in Las Vegas
Lillian - I would really appreciate the address/email of Bob Jordan in New York if you can find it. I'll follow any lead! Thanks for the help. Terri
Sharon, Did I answer your request? I still have your msg in my file and I can't remember....having a "senior moment" here!!! Meanwhile......here's some infor on Jardan and Simms from a deedbook. Mostly this just proves the people were in the area at a specific time period and, if you can find a good map, with the description, might be able to locate where land was. June 1794- Anthony Johnson and Edward Morton of Hunterton, NJ, 38 acres near the head of Cowpasture Creek; part of 98 acres patented to James Young July 14, 1767, who conveyed to WILLIAM JORDAN, who conveyed to Johnson Oct 1796-WILLIAM and MARY JORDAN to Edward Morton 90 acres on head branches of Cowpasture..........patented to WILLIAM JORDAN, SR Nov 1, 1793. Nov 1803-Henry Burnett to ANDREW JORDAN and Jehu Johnson, Lot # (blank), West Square, Franklin. Oct 1805- Joseph and Catharine Briggs, Ross Co., OH to JOHN JOURDAN, 70 acres on east side of South Branch between the mountain and the river hill opposite Miller's salt blocks. (note: I think South Branch refers to the south branch of the Potomac river. My ancestors owned land on the South Branch and the North Branch, which is on most maps) Aug 1810-Henry Pausel to JOHN JURDON. Lease on plantation and land on Black Thorn. Jul 1812- ANDREW and LETTICE JORDAN and Jehu and Mary Johnson to Joshua Wood. Lot in Franklin opposite that of Isreal Brown. Feb 1809- William and Elizabeth Harris to JAMES SIMS, JR, 3 tracts in Bullpasture Mountains, 77 acres, 14 acres, 49 acres patented Aug 12, 1796.
Does anyone have LDS film #0818558, Pendleton marriages 1800-1970 at there disposal that is willing to do a lookup for me? Betteann, Does your book have any information on Elizabeth Hoover (b. 1794) or Nicholas Cook (b. 1792) or Harvey Cook (b. 1794). All from Pendleton Co. Betteann - Thank you very much for the Jordan/Smith information. And you certainly are not butting in - I can use all the help I can get!! I have looked for Andrew Jordans will before, but was never successful - so thank you - now if I can just put all the pieces together. I do know that one of the daughters married Peter Smith, brother of John Jr. And since there is a daughter Jain, maybe my Jane was named for her "aunt"?? I had seen John Smiths will before - how unfortunate that the children aren't named! Certainly would have helped!! It appears that Jane remarried, but I haven't been successful tracing the property either. Thanks again for all your help. Terri
Hi! No other JORDAN than the ones I already posted. Under SIMMS/SIMS found: Dec 1860. Will of Daniel STONE, SR. Lists son-in-law Solomon SIMMS and grandchildren Joseph, Rhody, William, George, Susan, Daniel, Henry. Husband and children of Daniel's deceased dau. Lucinda. May 1825. Will of Margaret SIMS. Taken by illness at home of silas SIMS. Mentions daus. Elizabeth LUCKY and Catharine SEYBERT. Also grandson Bennia SIMS. May 1845. Wills of Silas SIMMS/SIMS. Sons John and Kial. Wife Sarah. I also found indications that the JORDAN family was in Pendleton Co. as early as 1794. I have a book of Deedbook Records and there are JORDAN and SIMS in the index. When I get time I'll look them up for you. Happy Hunting Betteann in Las Vegas
Betteann: Pardon me for butting in on you but in this Pendleton will book that you have, is there any other Jordan's listed? I also noticed the name "Simms" in your previous message. Is there any "Simms" wills in this book? I hate to impose, but could you look this up for me? I have been trying to find my gggg-grandfather's parents for a few years now with no luck. I believe he was illegitimate and his mother's name was Matilda. His name was Payton. His first name was John but he went by his middle name of Payton, born in 1837. Any help you could give me? Much thanks in advance.
