Lawrence Eagle, a descendant of George Washington Eagle, wrote the following: How Upper Tract Got Its Name The South Branch of the Potomac River begins only eight miles from the south border of Pendleton County. It runs 36-1/2 miles within the County with a fall of 30 feet per mile. Just below Upper Tract it turns from its natural course down Mill Creek Valley and runs through a gorge between Cave and Little Mountain. This gorge is known as the Smoke Hole. The river bottom just above this covers about 2000 acres of land which looks a bit like prairie land of the West. The Eagle home at Upper Tract overlooks this valley. This land was part of the Green surveys, and was designated as the "upper tract" to distinguish it from a "lower tract" farther down in the Mill Creek valley. "Upper tract" is the largest single piece of bottom land in Pendleton County. Robert Green, a land speculator, acquired it in about 1850. The little village that grew on Tract Hill overlooking this pleasant valley thus gots its name, Upper Tract. (Eagles of Virginia, p. 43.) I've been surprised at the results too. I've already found a fifth cousin that lives in the same area that I do. Unfortunately, the Rexrode line is one of the ones that I have very little information on. The Rexrodes are in my husband's family and we only know back to his grandfather - Bruce Rexrode. The good news is that I haven't started digging real hard yet on it. I'll let you know if I find any ties to Maude Amanda Rexrode. Hi - I thought I had some "stuff" on my Grandmother Amanda Rexrode /Rexroad- but you see lists of Rexroad and Rexrode. Can anyone explain the difference. Barbara
Hi Group, Is there any one on here that lives in Upper Tract? I need some local help. (Please bear with this jumble) I have a picture copied from a book (sorry so vague-I don't have the source). The picture shows four houses in the Franklin and Upper Tract, as described: (1) Upper Tract Parsonage (2) John M. Kee home in Franklin (3) McClung Home near Upper Tract (4) G.W. Eagle home north of Upper Tract. What I want to know is: Are these homes still standing? In particular the McClung Home. The picture I have is of page 124. Maybe there is a local history book you may be aware of that has this page # showing the houses and you can tell me the source. All help appreciated! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~firebird/Coil.htm pamrooney@prodigy.net
Regarding the Grave Registry Errors: First, consider the source for volume one. Although they meant well, the data collected from the grave registry vol 1was complied by local people walking around a cemetery copying information directly off of tombstones. Most of these people were not serious genealogists and in most cases was not verified by any other reliable source. In some cases, people were added to the list solely on the basis that they were told by someone else that they were buried in that cemetery. Several people are buried in more than one cemetery. The most common error I have found is mis-transferred dates. I can't recall any in particular, but I know I've found over 50 errors in my research. In several cases I've went to the cemetery and found 8's confused with 3's, dates off by 20 years, etc. They were simply miscopied. The older tombstones are often extremely difficult to read and it's easy to "guess" at the right date. Add this to the fact that in some cases, the tombstones was not erected until much later than the person died leaving a margin of error for the engraver. The second type of dangerous error regards the notes at the far right of the person. For example, in the North Fork Cemetery, it lists my uncle John G. Raines with the correct dates but lists him in the notes section as the son of Miles Raines. Nowhere on the tombstone does it list John G. was the son of Miles Raines. In fact, John G. was the son of Joseph F. Raines and nephew of Miles Raines. This implies that there was a lot of editorial additions not factually supported by the tombstones. All I am implying is to use other documents to support what you find and don't rely solely on the registry. Gene Phares gphares@nilfisk-advance.com What kind of "known" errors? I hadn't heard this. Thanks. --shaunta Gene Phares wrote: > [snip] Volume 1 has many known errors that were still not corrected in volume 2 so be careful with what you find. > > Gene Phares > gphares@nilfisk-advance.com >
Gene, do you know what dates these books cover? I noticed on the Pendleton County books list that was sent a week or so ago there was a date range of 1850-1903 (or something close to that). Does this just apply to the death register or is it all of the information? Thanks for your help! Kim

Will someone please repost the information of the Grave Register Books? Thanks Sue

I just added my name to your list. I've been searching for about a year and have been quite successful, but of course am now running into some walls. I am looking for connections to Bland, Turner, Tichenor, Rexrode, Waybright, Miller, Dice, Caton, Hinkle, Sponaugle, Wimer, Jordan, Strauder, and many more. I look forward to receiving the postings. Please let me know if you need help maintaining the site or any other help to keep everything going. Stephanie Tichenor
The two grave books are completely different. Volume one basically lists each cemetery in the county, its location, and the people buried in it with birth/death dates and some notes from the tombstones. Volume two has demographic information regarding the persons death, ie. Where born, where died, parents, cause of death, informant. It also lists some cemeteries omitted in the first volume and some corrections. My opinion is that you need both. Volume 1 has many known errors that were still not corrected in volume 2 so be careful with what you find. Gene Phares gphares@nilfisk-advance.com >>> <Kfairbnks@aol.com> 11/05/99 07:41AM >>> Hi all. I was wondering if someone could tell me, are the grave register books, vol. 1 &2 the same books with a little more info in vol. 2? I was thinking about buying them, but wasn't sure if volume 2 covered everything in volume 1 and then some??? Thanks! Kim Fairbanks kfairbnks@aol.com

Dear Friends - AAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I am venting. I spent days detailing stuff on a table chart - like eyes going bonker here. Last night - the computer does its little FREEZE THINGY - then, when I did manage to recover the file - all I could save was the text - NO CHART - which meant that I have one HUGE column of everything going for pages and pages. I now have to take this stuff and replot it all over. AAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Not trying to start a coomputer topic here - just venting - what we go through to do this stuff- PHEW. Again, do not mean to start a computer thread. Gonna go take two aspirins!!! Barbara McDonald Levine

Hello Pendleton list I've had a crash and lost my e-mail addresses. I would like to talk with those that are doing the Davis line from the Seneca area of Pendleton Co. I believe if we talk we can make progress. I know the family went to Braxton Co and Tucker Co. I'm back to James davis that came here abt 1770. Many Thanks Don in Ks dknarr@swbell.net
I have come across a lot of Arbogasts in the state of WV from Clay Co. north. All of them turned out to go to Michael Arbogast of Pendleton-Highland Co. in the Crabbottom area. In fact, in 25 years I haven't found an Arbogast that didn't donnect to Michael. Has anyone else? I also have only found one other Riffle family in the state that does not go to the Jacob Riffle of Randolph and they are over along the Ohio River. They came from central Penna. and so far no connection has been found with the above Jacob. Jean
