    3. This is a worthy ideal. As a courtesy to those who I committed this offense with, please excuse me. My source for the info regarding Jacob Huffman was from the "Colaws of West Virginia", by Shirley Colaw. I'm always disappointed when people don't specify their sources -- but I had wondered if that behavior might be an unspoken rule of genealogical etiquette on the order of "I'll tell you the facts I know but if you want the sources you can find them yourself, like I did" -- it's good to know that that's not so. Your post raises a another issue that's been nagging me ... back in the days before computers, it was fairly easy to distinguish in one's working papers between well-documented facts and undocumented leads/speculation by using pencil, inserting a question mark (or 3) etc. -- with computers this isn't so easy, and I think this is part of the reason errors are rife on the internet. But I do want to enter these undocumented people/events in my database to suggest future avenues for research, and so forth. However, once they get in there it's hard to tell from the overview level which ones are solidly researched and which ones aren't. So the question: how does a professional deal with this issue? (As a programmer, I'd use a color-coding scheme, but to my knowledge none of the real programmers have thought of that). -- Julia

    2. Don Catherine Heavner, who married John Dean, is buried beside her husband in the Heavner Cemetery in Upshur Co., WV. She died 19 August 1877 according to the tombstone and death records of Upshur Co. Right behind her grave are the graves of her parents, Nicholas Heavner and Mary Propts Heavner. I suggest that there are 2 or more Catherine Heavner's. Hope this helps alittle. Ronna :)

I keep stuff on a chart (Table-Word) and I use color coding. It's just easy for me to see at a glance. Again, this is just what works for me - but I am NOT a professional gen. person. 3. Hello. I would like to thank everyone who has been helping me straighten out the crooked branches of our family tree. I am now looking for parent, sibling and birthdate information for Frederick Valentine Colaw - supposedly 1750, also known simply as Valentine Colaw, or "Felty". Also looking for same info on his wife Mary Huffman (1755). Additionally any information regarding a Terah Colaw, (or Collo, Coller, or Kohler). Thanks so much. This list is a wonderful boon for researchers. John Colaw

    2. I inadvertently left out a word in the first sentence of the first paragraph. It should have read: "John was living in Pendleton County but he is from parts unknown, and she is listed as Margaret in the 1860-70 Lewis Co. Census and on her Tombstone in Lewis Co." Sorry about that Don Wilson Chalmette, LA

    3. Dear Faithful Readers, We all greatly appreciate the assistance offered to researchers of the Pendleton County families. Since the physical topography of the land did not allow suitors to wander far from their immediate neighborhood, the families became very entwined. Most of us are double and triple cousins. We have many new members so it seems time to remind us all of one basic rule you must put up with when you have a List Moderator who is Certified. This remainder is not directed at any singular message or posting, but is the major reason that our list enjoys an outstanding reputation for quality genealogical assistance. Please, PLEASE, include the source of your information when you post data and questions to the list. The Internet has become an explosion of mis-information and let's all hope that OUR list does not contribute to this further. It is NOT appropriate to write: >Jacob Smith was the son of Buster and Barbara (Jones) Smith, according to my resource material. "My resource material," as a source, is not appropriate, as it is impossible to analyze for accuracy. If the statement is based upon primary data, like a church record or will, this citation must be included. It makes LOTS of difference in our discussion of the accuracy of the information. If it is from the works of another person, it is somewhere between common courtesy and copyright laws to give credit to that person and the publication or Internet web site. Unfortunally, I could respond that "This is wrong--Jacob was the son of Jack Smith and Susie Q. who immigrated from Timbuktu in 1650!" And, within a few months this will pop up in innumerable family files on web sites all over the Internet. <G> BTW, about 95% of the Hinkle web sites have inaccurate data on that family. The first one, posted on a county genealogy society web site, had mistakes and everyone since has just recopied these errors. More is not always better. 'Nuf said and I will get off my soap box. Perhaps I should offer a prize to the first list member who spots an Internet compilation of a Pendleton County ancestor born in Timbuktu! <G> Remember, genealogy without documentation is mythology! 1. Re: Netiquette and "Rules" for Pendleton County List and my story of woe.
    2. Amen! I am still trying to clarify the ancestry of my Gr. Gr. Grandmother Catherine Heavner m. George Mumbert. WV Gen Web shows she married John Dean in 1814, or two years after the birth of my Gr. Grandmother, Margaret Mumbert Harris. Pendleton Co. Marriage Records show Margaret as Rebecca and married John Harris. John was living in Pendleton County but he is from parts unknown, and is listed as Margaret in the 1860-70 Lewis Co. Census and on her Tombstone in Lewis Co. If that's not confusing enough, George was the father of several of Margaret's siblings after Catherine Heavener supposedly had married John Dean. George did not marry Catherine Blizzard until 1828. The Catherine listed here is the daughter of Cutlip Heavner. Woe is me! I think I will go back to the tree stump and the crow scenario that my mother used to use, to determine my ancestry. Between Morton's, Pendleton Co. Marriage Records, and the WV Gen Web I am about to go bezonkers. PS According to information found at the Library at the Pendleton County seat, in one of the Heavner (Heffner) books, Catherine Heavner Mumbert died in 1828 and was probably buried on the Mumbert Farm in Pendleton Co. Woe, Woe is me! Don Wilson Chalmette, LA

    2. Hi everyone - I personally think that the Pendleton County area is simply one of the most beautiful places around and try to visit every time I ever get a chance which is not often, unfortunately. I can certainly remember visiting there as a child - and it had a certain smell (nice) and sound to it. I know, sounds strange, but it is true. I remember that on the way up to Germany Valley area, through the mountains, from Arlington, VA, there was a strip on the mountain highway that had a PYRAMID of stone that was a water fountain. We always stopped there. It was within the last 10 years I believe that on a visit there with my dad, the Pyramid was GONE - it had been taken down. I was so saddened by that becuase it was such a neat "little watering" hole. Anyone out there remember that Pyramid Watering Fountain? As a resident now of FL, there are times when I just long for those mountains, and that air, especially during our hot summers - Phew!!!! Palm Trees get boring after awhile - :) and when you live here, you can't do sun EVERYDAY. I also remember a trip to Seneca Rocks - oh, in the last 6 years, I couldn't believe all the SUV's from VA/Wash., D.C. area that were parked in the parking lot - I guess the area is becoming a "tourist" site???? 3. Hi everyone. I'm new to this list. My genealogy research is my Grandmother Grace Elizabeth Mongold family. She was born in 1893 - Grant Co., WV. to David Clinton MONGOLD and Mary Ellen YANKEY. Mary Ellen YANKEY's parents were Harvey Washington Yankey and Mary Margaret Ketterman. Does anyone have info on the marriage of Jacob C. Ketterman and Mary Ann ARBOGAST m.January 13, 1820 Pendleton', 'Virginia. They had a daughter named Mary Margaret Ketterman but is it the same Mary Margaret who married Harvey Washington Yankey?
