    1. Re: Thoughts of Pendleton
    2. I have never been there, but most definitely plan to make a trip!! I love the small town kind of feeling that it sounds like Pendleton has. I can't wait! Of course, I will be making the trip with a three year old and a one year old. Should make life interesting!!

    1. Thoughts of Pendleton
    2. Well, I am going to hop on board while everyone is complementing Pendleton and throw in my opinions... My father was born in Circleville and most of his ancestors were there several generations before him...as a small child, and during the Depression Era, his parents made a difficult decision to move to Charleston, WV to seek work...he grew up there, with his parents and brother, and Charleston is where I was born and have lived all my life...my dad fondly remembers going back to Pendleton each weekend to visit the family that remained... I can remember visiting Pendleton occasionally as a child...so, needless to say that when I started genealogy a few years ago I was more than excited to revisit the county that my ancestors had lived in... To sum up a long story, all I can say is breathtaking, beautiful, charming, I wouldn't change a thing...for people like myself who live within a larger city, I need some place like Pendleton to "come home to"...I found the pace of life very refreshing and a welcome change to my routine...I had a wonderful time driving throughout various places in Pendleton, meeting wonderful people, and discovering the areas that my ancestors lived in... A few of my favorite spots...the scenic views from Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, Germany Valley...just to name a few...no wonder our ancestors lived here, what beauty... Proud to be a part of Pendleton, Caroline Lyles

It was about 10:15 and they weren't open yet so I didn't wait I went by several restaurants which were crowded (hunters and leaf watchers) and finally stopped at a little service station/grocery just before I got to Seneca Rocks. I asked the girl working there if she could make me an egg sandwich which she did and I told her about not being able to buy eggs. After I ate my sandwich and drank two cups of the best coffe I have had for a long time and was getting ready to leave, she said I will give you an egg for your breakfast tomorrow if you want one. Only in West Virginia would they give you an egg, I told her and we started talking. I found out her mother and my dad were first cousins but neither of us knew that before. Not surprising since I had 57 first cousins. I am related to over 75% of the people in Pendleton County and proud of it. Bonnie Vance Miller

We just got our first stoplight in the county 1 1/2 years ago!!! There is one grocery store and two pharmacies in the county. There are no fast food resturants, at least until the 15th of this month, then "Mean Gene's" will open in a new Texaco gas station/conveinece store/fast food resturant in Franklin. There is no railroad, nor four lane highways. What you will fined here are friendly people, clean air and water, good fishin' and quiet, beautiful mountains and valley areas. You do not have to be afraid to leave your car unlocked while you shop, or walk down the street. Everyone is helpful, if you ask them right. The pace of life here is slower, few people rush around. I moved here from Maryland in 1983, and love it here. Like any community, you have both good and bad, but the good outweighs the bad in my thinking. Good luck in your research. The closest hospitals are Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, WV; Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA; and the hospital in Elkins, WV. Whom are you researching? Maybe we can help in some way. Koren Fae Rawlings 304-358-3261 Pendleton Co., WVa Historical Preservation Association pendhist@access.mountain.net

    2. I am looking for the birth and death record of Hady Helmick Landes(is). I am not sure what her birth name was, I have seen her as Hady, Ada, Hoda, Hadie. I have been told by family members that she was born in September 1884. I believe (99.9% sure) that her parents were Edith Jane Shreve and Adam Fisher Helmick. I have not been able to find anything to confirm completely. I was hoping a death record could confirm a birth date or something. I would even like to find an obit if there was one. She does have two children living. Does anyone know Adam Landes or Edna Kimble??? They are still living in Pendleton from what I understand. Unfortunately, my family moved to VA and I have never met any of these relatives.

    3. >message to. I do not know of any other members of the above mention >organizations that have e-mail addresses here in Franklin,Pendleton >County, WV. Koren's note reminds us all of an important perspective to remember. Not everyone who might help you has a computer, much less Internet access. Sometimes we still need to use paper and word processor and write a real letter, remembering to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for their reply. The cousin who might have known your grandmother or attended church with Great Aunt Bessie will probably not be available via Internet chat rooms. My last visit to Pendleton County was two years ago and I was in many homes. Not one had a computer, but we forded North Fork to view a tombstone from the 1820's, had a guided tour to a Civil War-era cemetery (a chapter in "'Twixt North and South" is devoted to the skirmish were they died and the bodies laid over the rail fence), a carved peg leg from a Civil War veteran! and the largest tree in Pendleton County (a site of wonder to the locals). We saw the house where the soldiers died which still does not have plumbing but our guide lived there as a child and related that the blood stains are still in the wood floors "because you can never wash blood stains out of the wood." If it was not up a 4-wheel drive road and through locked gates ("to keep out the hippies") the entire upper meadow and farm site would make a beautiful historic site and far exceeded those tourist areas of the flat lands. An item of perspective if you should visit North Fork, the river has shifted its course. The road originally ran on the east side of the river (it is now on the west) which explains why all of the old farm houses are on the east side and need a means of crossing the river to get out. A branch of the Hinkle Family moved from Pendleton County, stopped briefly in Iowa and in 1853 led a wagon train to Oregon. The valley of their farms near Philomath looks exactly like Germany Valley. BTW, I live in Oregon, although my family came to this state in the 1930's. 3. I agree with Barb's message about Pendleton Co and feel the same way about Randolph and Tucker Counties also. They truly are beautiful. I think West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in our country. My husband was from Tucker County, and I have enjoyed our many trips there, but he's been dead for 24 years and I don't get back there as much as I'd like to. It was only 2 years ago that I got to New German Valley and up very high to visit a graveyard and the scenery was spectacular. I'd love to see it in the fall with the leaves changing colors, but I can only get there in the summer. It is a very beautiful area. Evelyn Roy

    3. Dear Nedra, Amen. Too many people think if FTM has it down it must be true, likewise with submitted trees to the Mormon records and other places. I fell in the trap of using a question mark which everybody then omitted. So, let me say to anyone who is a descendent of Jacob Snider and Susannah ?. I suggested she might be a Hoover. I started getting trees from people with this stated as fact. The truth of the matter is that with further research I am SURE she was not a HOOVER. If you have written her in without the question mark, please, please, take it out. You can write the question marks and they are ignored. Also, I have more information on Jacob, but I would like to correspond personally rather than on the whole list. Another pet peeve of mine and Nedra how do you feel about this? I get unsolicitated files of families that are not even mine that take time to download and are worthless to me. Would it not be common courtesy to ask if a person wants an entire file sent? This has not been a problem on this list, but on others it gets serious. Also a hint to the wise. Remember 78 rpm records? 8 track tapes? Got any of them? What do you play them on? Nothing in computer land is permanent. Be sure that you have a back up--nothing like pencil and paper. Jean jloudin@rtol,net

    2. Ronna, Thank you for the post. The Heavner Book I referred in my last post states Catherine was the daughter of Gotlieb "Cutlip" Haefner, son of John (Johan) Haefner and Catharina Elizabetha (unknown, wife) of Clearing Springs, MD. Cutlip married Catharine Shafer b. 1867 in MD. This book also states Catharine, dau of Cutlip married George Mumbert and died in 1828. If all this information is correct, and since John Dean's in-laws were Nicholas Heavner and Mary Propts Heavner, The WV Genweb posting of John Dean and Catherine Heavner, first spouse George Mumbert, is in error and needs to be corrected. Sure hope someone can correct this, as another whole family of relatives in WV, I do not need. I feel like I am related to about 75% of all the residents there, now. Thank you very much for taking the time to set my mind back on the right track. Don Wilson Chalmette, LA

    2. Hi all. This may be a really dumb question, but here goes...I am searching for my gr gr grandmother's birth and death records. I have asked Pendleton county courthouse for both and they have no record of them. I have been told she was born and raised in Upper Tract or Smoke Hole. It was suggested to me that maybe she died in Grant at their hospital and her death record my be with them. Does Pendleton not have a hospital? I am from Northern VA and have no idea what is there. How about births? Would their have been hospitals in the 1880s? I apologize for my ignorance on this, but any info would be helpful. Thanks! Kim Fairbanks

I'm always disappointed when people don't specify their sources -- but I had wondered if that behavior might be an unspoken rule of genealogical etiquette on the order of "I'll tell you the facts I know but if you want the sources you can find them yourself, like I did" -- it's good to know that that's not so. Your post raises a another issue that's been nagging me ... back in the days before computers, it was fairly easy to distinguish in one's working papers between well-documented facts and undocumented leads/speculation by using pencil, inserting a question mark (or 3) etc. -- with computers this isn't so easy, and I think this is part of the reason errors are rife on the internet. But I do want to enter these undocumented people/events in my database to suggest future avenues for research, and so forth. However, once they get in there it's hard to tell from the overview level which ones are solidly researched and which ones aren't. So the question: how does a professional deal with this issue? (As a programmer, I'd use a color-coding scheme, but to my knowledge none of the real programmers have thought of that). -- Julia
