    3. I already have the copy of Christian's will in Walter Eye's book, which list all his children. I did ask her if she had any information on Henry, Christopher's son. Haven't heard back from her yet. -----Original Message----- From: Greg Lowery <gslowery@net-nw.com> To: WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com <WVPENDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, December 12, 1999 8:22 PM Subject: Re: HEFNER in NC >Is this person going to send you the info in the will. 2. Barbara, Esther Davis' parents were Robert Davis and Sarah Dyer (widow Hawes). Because Hannah is a common name in the Dyer family there may be a relationship but the Davis family is not within my knowledge. Karl

    3. Oh, the scandals should be priceless - just proves that human nature never changes. Barbara On that note I have to respond, there are some juicy divorce cases, one in my family that Morton didn't dare list so you could make sense of it. There were men who just up and left, wife later remarried, husband returned--you can guess the mess there, some decided to split without legal divorce (too expensive and hard to get) and the man and wife went to live with another man and woman and raised other families, there are records of parent(s) being hauled into court because their child had a kid out of wedlock--just no way Morton could include all that and not get hung. Or anybody else for that matter. The scandals are there in many cases in the court records, those are the things families lied about and ignored and certainly didn't tell the grandchildren about. 1. WILSON/SMALLRIDGE--1823
    2. Please Santa, break down this BRICK WALL for me for Christmas! My Sara D. WILSON was born on July 17, 1824 in Pendleton County, VA and married there on May 14, 1848 to Charles Beckwith FOWLER, born March 28, 1825 in Rockingham County, VA a son of Wilson W. and Lucinda (NICKOLS) FOWLER. Sara's death certificate says that she is a daughter of James WILSON but no mother is given. To my knowledge, her and Charles's marriage license does not list parents. Below is all I have to go on as far as a mother for Sara. Can anyone help???? A James WILSON married Sarah SMALLRIDGE in Pendleton County, Va., on March 8, 1823. Ceremony performed by Otho Wade, Can anyone give me a list of children of this couple?? Also, a James WILSON married Rachel BLIZARD in Pendleton County on June 15, 1819. Ceremony performed by F. Lair. Is this the SAME James WILSON with two different wives. Does anyone have a list of the children of this couple. Any help greatly appreciated. Will answer all responses. What happened to Michael Waybright and his wife, Catherenia, after they sold their land in Pendleton Co. on 3 September 1826 to Adam Halterman? They do not appear on the 1830 Pendleton or Highland Co. census. Am trying to establish who the children were of Michael and Catherine. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Evelyn

    1. Misinformation
    2. Jean Loudin
    3. Just had to stick my nose in this discussion. The place where I find that people absolutely did not lie concerns land deeds and land battles. Find, seek, search for that juicy land battle and you will have information coming out your ears and it will be true. Children are named, illegitimacies, husbands and wives, etc. Never ever overlook the deeds--especially ones marked in indexes as done by land commissioner, or order of court, etc. They are priceless. Also, in the burnt courthouse counties. After the fire families came in the establish ownership of their land and they often have the original deed that they file, or they have sworn depositions as to how they got the land and the children of the original owner and how they fit in the scheme. Found one of those in Webster Co that was the final proof I needed on my Snyder line. Just because the thing burnt up once does not mean it doesn't show up again, just a different date. I mention this as I think this is one of the most overlooked aspects of genealogical research. It takes time, but it is worth it and it often disproves a lot of the old myths that have been handed down. Also, poor Morton, remember he was trying to cover up the approximately 10% illegitimate births among the population along with other scandals. He is a good starting place, just check everything. And everybody lies about ages or misgives them during their lives. Just being human. Merry Christmas Jean

    3. My experience exactly. Errors by Morton in his histories have thoroughly muddied the waters in my own family tree, and we still have not sorted it out. I often have people mail me relationships, yet they are just copying Morton's bad research. But the Census is no better. There is not one definitive source for information that is secure from human error. Question everything. Even hand me down stories are suspect. 1. Re: Misinformation
    2. This is a message I received from one of the other mailing lists that I am a member of. It is in reference to the misinformation that has been discussed. I found it to be interesting... I have a friend who is 96. She says that when she was a child and the Census taker came around, they took the word of whomever they could find at home. She said that at 5 years old, she just guessed at everyone's age and birthdate. When she got older, she deliberately switched birthdates with her brother because he wanted to sign up for military duty when he was 2 years underage. Later, she had an awful time getting it straightened out with Social Security when she wanted to retire at 65 and they thought she was 63. Evidently, the Census data, right or wrong was a legal proof of age for some purposes. I used to worry a lot about not having the exact dates correct on an ancestor match but now I just smile and shake my head, especially when I have high confidence in the rest of the data.> What good insight into some of the reasons for Inaccuracy of census data, especially dates. I've always been told the census is an unreliable source because of the tendency of people to tell "white lies" such as illustrated here or, more importantly, to maintain appearances. The census taker is likely a neighbor and, although the census data are supposed to be private, how could one resist juicy information? I always try to find families in more than one census and compare the implied birthdates. In one family, there were two daughters who seemed destined to become old maids. It was interesting that they did not advance 10 years with the last census I found. More like two or three, and it can be presumed either they or their parents still held out hopes. Both funny and true.

Put this junk in their tree and publish it all over the web and there it will be to confuse others. And the LDS is the same. It is apparent that these people never made a trip to the Federal Census Records Center .I can understand that -I'm lucky to be fifty miles from the one in Kansas City. In those history books I can believe the public records that they quote- I consider the rest just a hint, a lead to be confirmed. I will not take the time here to tell you of the things I found to be wrong in my Davis line. 2. In this era we jump to the conclusion that a John Sr. and John Jr. in the same area must be father and son. That is not true for the early years. I have two cases in my Davis line- Thomas Sr. and Thomas Jr. plus Jesse Sr. and Jesse Jr . both of the seniors were uncles to the juniors. It was just a way to tell them apart. It may have just been added by the census taker. thanks for your time don knarr in Ks
