I finally found a map of Highland County that shows Straight Creek. The headwaters are to the east of Monterey, it runs northwest and finally enters Jackson River. On this map it shows that the headwaters were on Jack Mountain north of the road thru Monterey. It isn't detailed enough to show Long, Song, or whatever ridge. Hope this is some help. There was a Long family in Highland, but not sure where they located or when. Jean
Mary, There is a ridge called LONG Ridge. Maybe the transciber mis-read the "S" for a "L". It may be worthwhile to plot out the actual description of the land (beginning at a large white oak ...). If the description includes a boundary which is a creek or ridge, you may be able to recognize the same creek or ridge (or spring) today on a U.S.G.S. quadrangle map of the area ...
Me again, Monterey is in present day Highland Co. Va. The location was once part of Pendleton. The northwestern side of Highland was where the Halterman family was located, they married into my Snyder family. Jean
Are you sure it says Song? Would it be Sang? I would reread that part very carefully. Song just doesn't sound right at all, but there are strange names out there. Jean
Can anyone tell me where Song ridge is or was in Pendleton County. I recently received a copy of the deed of the property that my 5th great grandfather, Charles Halterman, owned in Pendleton County. In the description it reads: "James Wood Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia to all to whom these present shall come greeting know ye that by virture of part of a Land office treasury Warrant number four hundred and sixty two, issued the fourteenth day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety one, There is granted by the said Commonwealth unto Charles Halterman a certain tract or parcel of Land containing two hundred acres, by survey bearing date the twenty fourth day of November one thousand seved hundred and ninety five, lying and being in the County of Pendleton on the head water of Straight Creek on Song ridge including a large spring and his own improvement and bounded as followith to Wit beginning at a large white oak and red oaks......................." On a very new map I located Strait Creek northwest of Monterey, Pendleton County, WV. I also found there are two Strait Creeks one is called West Strait Creek. Any help would be appreciated. I do not know when the next marriage book will be finished. I do know the person that is doing it is very good to make sure all things are proper before stating any facts in her research. She is a very busy person, work, family, Family History Center, here in Franklin, etc. As soon as I know anything, I will post it to the list. She originally published these. Jackie Puffenbarger re-typed both books into a computer file and set them up for re-publication as a combined volume. She incorporated my corrections to Mary's reading of the hand writing on the records that are at the WVU Archives. The Historical Society sponsored the reprinting of these--they did not do the abstracting. Is anyone on this list contemplating this project? Does anyone know if Wes Cochrane published marriages from Pendleton County? His books are based upon the WPA records, not the originals, thus are subject to errors in transcription. Pendleton County's WPA records are particularly poor. You can always rent the microfilm from the LDS and photocopy the pages. Unfortunately, the marriage books are not indexed. Koren, Might you have any knowledge of Letters from Sees in Hardy County (probably Anna Trumbo See) that were in Trumbo family papers ? The reason that I ask is because I have transcriptions of the Trumbo letters sent to my G.G. Grandmother, Anna Trumbo See. the letters are from the 1850s-1870s. The letters are part of the See MS collection at William & Mary. If there is someone thinking about doing this project, I would volunteer to help input the data into a computer file. Unfortunately, with a 3 year old and 8 1/2 month old and living 3 hours from Pendleton, researching is not an option for me. I could however help put these names and dates into a file. I personally would love to see this as a book, but can only volunteer to do some of the work involved. Any others willing to help take on the task?? Let me know and lets get started! Kim Fairbanks kfairbnks@aol.com
I would love to see that one too!!! I am sure it is lots of work to put together.

Pendleton County is isolated which can be very good! Other, more popular lists have experienced virus problems which we have so far escaped. Our host Rootsweb does not allow attachments and blocks any message that attempt to send it. So PROMPTLY delete any message from a Rootsweb list that has an attachment, AND the attachment. I am trying to find someone out there who is a member of the historical society that can help me. I need to ask a few questions about the published resources and how long it takes to fill requests. Anyone who can help? Thanks! Kim Fairbanks kfairbnks@aol.com
Hope it is okay to use this site to inform of a bad virus on CBS news tonight via FBI. If you get an e-mai that is "pix4you" and appears to be from a friend - DO NOT OPEN - it will activate Jan 1 and wipe out your computer. It is worse than "Melissa" Barbara in FL

It is always good genealogical practice to obtain the BEST versions of the source. In this case, a second abstract would be better--a photocopy of the original will would be the BEST! You can either view the microfilm by renting it at your local LCS Family History Center Library or request a photocopy from the County Clerk of Pendleton County. Be sure to include a SASE with your request. Never *assume* that the abstractor was perfect! For instance, punctuation was non-existent in the early documents. Does the phrase "my daughters Susan Ann Mary Elizabeth and Phebe Jane" refer to 2, 3, 4, 5 or ? daughters? Unless you are intimately familiar with the family sometimes it is hard to know. Abstractors also have a habit of adding relationships that are not stated in the document.
