I contacted a WV researcher a couple of weeks ago, after finding her ad in the Heritage Quest Magazine (Nov/Dec 99). What a find! Her rates were reasonable, and she found even more than I had asked for! So if anyone out there needs a researcher in WV, I highly recommend you contact Joyce McCune at mccunej@wirefire.com. I have already posted this to the WV rootsweb list, and thought I'd also post it here since this is such a great and active list. Joyce gave me her permission to post her email address to the lists. Thanks Judy. I will keep trying to hunt for alternative names in case she didn't know for sure. Her daughter only knew her as Jennie Oates so always figured that was right. The Puffenbarger came as a real surprise. Jerylin -- I have Wes Cochran's book of Lewis County Marriages 1817-1880 which shows a marriage on 5/15/1879 between Joseph Losh and Betsy A. Puffinbarger. No other references to Puffenbarger or Oates. The best source of information for all of Central WV is Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants. Their site is http://www.rootsweb.com/~hcpd/ Good luck. Judy Corrin
Myrt Thanks. I will try your suggestions. Never thought of looking for Oakes as said Oates on her application for marriage in Nebraska. She was 8 years old in 1880 so maybe she didn't understand what her name was. Jerilyn
Jerilyn, There are Puffenbargers in Lewis Co. The best advice I can offer is for you to contact the Hackers Creek Pioneers Descendants (HCPD) at Horner, WV. They have a website at www.usgenweb.org. Click to state list, then West Virginia, then Lewis Co., then to HCPD link. This organization has a wealth of information for the central WV area and are very helpful. They may be able to help on the marriage record and or adoption record. I am no longer a member so I do not know what they charge non-members for information. But it is worth a try. Also, there are Puffenbargers in Highland Co. VA. Highland at one time was part of Pendleton Co. The ladies that work at the courthouse in Monterey are very nice. If you write a request to the clerk of the circuit court, they will look for the information and bill you if they find anything. 50 cents per page. It may take a week or so but worth the wait. Many families from Bath Co and Highland Co VA migrated to the Lewis, Upshur, Braxton, and Gilmer Co areas in West Virginia. One other thought. Have you considered the name might be Oakes instead of Oates. Hope this helps, Myrt
I am just clutching at straws since you say most of your research is in Weston, Lewis Co., West Virginia. I have been hunting for my husband's great grandmother's lineage. She was born Sarah Elizabeth Oates (we think). In 1880 she was living with a McCluster family as adopted with the name Sarah E. Puffenbarger. When she got married she listed her name as Jennie Oates and her parents as Elizabeth Puffenbarger and Benjamin Oates and being born in Lewis Co., West Virginia. There are not either Puffenbargers or Oates in Lewis Co., I looked in Pendalton Co., where there are lots of Puffenbargers and lots of Elizabeths. Getting no answers there. Anyway I am only wondering if you have run across either of these names in your research as I know when I spend a lot of time in one county you get pretty familiar with the names. I did look for her birth date in Weston once and no there. Didn't get to the marriage records and probably should try adoption records. Thanks if you have anything to help me with. Jerilyn
Dear Marcia, Thank you for responding. When reading your information I was hoping your Peter was a connection, but I don't see one. I have been unable to find any solid information as to where Peter and Phoebe Smith came from. There is a marriage record in Harrison Co. WV for a Peter Smith and Phoebe Thorne (4 Oct 1813) but haven't been able to confirm this is my Peter. I found Peter and Phoebe Smith on the marriage record of their son, Martin J. Smith to Margaret Talbott/Tolbott on 20 April 1841 in Lewis Co., VA/WV. Martin/Margaret had 7 children, all born in Lewis Co.: Ellis Lee, Salathiel T.(isn't that a great name!!), Clinton M., Margaret S., Sarah A., Olive A., and George C. Smith. Our line comes down through Ellis Lee Smith. Ellis Lee Smith was born in 1843, Lewis Co. VA/WV and on 1 Aug 1865 married Matilda Frances Hudson. Ellis/Matilda had 11 children all in Lewis Co.: Clarence L., Flavilla F. (another great name!), Margaret, Jacob, Roscoe, Washington H., Ellis Lee Jr., Grace, Este, Myrtle, and Hugh Smith. Our line comes down through Hugh, the youngest child. Hugh Smith was born 2 July 1881, Lewis Co. WV and on 24 April 1910 married Lillie Alta Waren. Hugh Smith died 3 December 1941. Hugh/Alta had 5 children: Howard Clarence, Harvey, Agnes, Agrabelle, and Mary Jane. Our line is Howard Clarence Smith. Howard Clarence Smith was born 18 August 1912 and on 3 Feb 1934 married Harriet Pauline Somerville. Howard and Pauline Smith are my husband's parents. I agree, trying to trace a name like SMITH is not easy. Oral family history is extremely helpful. Most of my info came from census records for Lewis Co. and courthouse records in Weston WV. I was lucky this family stayed in one area for such a long period of time, otherwise they may have been to difficult to track. Thanks again for writing and good luck in your future root diging. Don, The old lady is getting senile. I saw the beginning of your message and thought, Oh, boy, someone knows something that will help Don Wilson, and I wondered if I still had your e-mail address. But when I finished reading, I saw your name so you're still looking for your John and Margaret Harris's ancestors, and I'm still looking for Samuel and Margaret Wilson's. I wonder if both couples sprang full grown from the earth or dropped from the sky? Seriously, it's so frustrating. I wish I'd paid attention when my mother talked about the Wilson family. Tucker County cemeteries are listed in a great book called "They Rest Quietly" or something like that. I don't have the book, but Salt Lake City has it and probably on microfilm
Lil, So good to here from you after all this time. Yep, still looking, I did pretty good with Margaret. She was the daughter of George Mumbert and Catharine Heffner. Catharine was the daughter of Cutlip Heffner. Think about this, I descended from the Sterns Family on the Ohio River, and the Heffners on the Potomac River in the Eastern part of WV. I can promise you I won't go into Radio Broadcasting or Publishing Girlie Magazines. It boggles the mind, except I know it's not who you were, and where you've been, but who you are and where your are going. I wish you the best, we hope to be in WV the last weekend in May for the 52nd reunion of Monongah High class of '48. Can't say go Lions, they went and Monongah High is now Monongah Middle School. Wish I could help you with the Wilson's but you may know mine were the David Wilson crew from Sistersville. That is just another situiation I haven't really explored, it is a line loaded with tragedy, and I just can't get my heart into researching it, lately. Regards, please keep in touch. Good afternoon everyone, Can anyone tell me how I can find out where some of my ancestors are buried? Unfortunately, they are in a different county, not Pendleton, one with no real resources to speak of. I don't know exactly where I would go to look. I called the courthouse, but they had no idea. HELP! I have to say, Pendleton has some of the best resources available to genealogists. I have been looking in several different states and no one compares to Pendleton. All of you who have put the time into researching and making records available should be proud! Thanks for your help! Kim Fairbanks kfairbnks@aol.com

I have Elizabeth Jane WILSON who was born in 1752 in Augusta County VA, with supposed parents of William and Mary DEVERICKS WILSON. Elizabeth married William Buell BLAGG abt 1772 ( place unknown) William and Elizabeth Wilson BLAGG both died in Doe Hill. One child was John BLAGG who was born in Highland, VA, 9 June 1778. The name William HARRIS caught my eye. I have been trying to find the parents of John Harris that married Margaret Mumbert in Pendleton Co. 24 DEC 1832. Even though the marriage records call her Rebecca, her name was Margaret and they called her "Peggy." They moved to Lewis Co. sometime after they married. John was born in 1806 and died in Lewis Co. in 1885. These two are my Pendleton Co. connection and my Gr. Grand Parents. Any connections or knowledge of these two out there? Don Wilson Chalmette, LA
