    3. Hi Una, Have you checked Morton or Toothman? I have some Mosers in my background and I recall one of the Moser girls married a Hinkle boy about 1800, but that would be too late to help you. But seems to me I looked at it, and came to the conclusion that if it wasn't in Morton or Toothman, you are in trouble. By the way, there was no Hardy County until 1786; probably the birth was in Augusta County. 2. Greetings Tim: I was reading your post on the Pendleton list when I noticed the surnames you are researching...one of them being Barclay (Barkley)...would that connection be for you Levi Eye who married Sarah E. Barkley in 1868?...if so, Sarah is my gg-grandmother's, Caroline Barkley, sister...maybe that would make Sarah my gg-aunt... I have several children listed for the marriage Levi and Sarah, but no descendants from there... I have some info on the Barkley family if you are intersted or perhaps you have something you can share regarding the Barkley family...it has been difficult to trace beyond Sarah's parents, Obed and Eleanor Davis Barkley...they were married in 1819 in Pendleton and I cannot locate this family in Pendleton prior to that... Also, if you have any info that you are willing to share regarding the children and descendants of Levi and Sarah Barkley Eye I would appreciate that... 3. Sign me up Roots in Pendleton County over 230 years and 7 generations. I have been compiling "Eye" family information for some time now. I plan a visit to the Franklin area in mid July of this year to visit family that I haven't seen in 40 years. Family lines directly linked to my heritage are as follows; Eye (Au) , Zorn, Stone, Propst, Barclay, Simmons. Original homestead due South of Franklin about 5-10 miles near Moyers & Sugar Grove on the Blackthorn Run..............Stauffles Run named for the original "Dutchman" ..Stophel Au....in German (Deutch).....Dutch......later anglicised to Christopher Eye............Au translates to Eye in English. This family farmed in the region and multiplied prolificly. Apparently Christopher was a veteran of the Revolutionary War........served in the battle of Yorktown.........once I have confirmation of this information, the entire Eye family will stand a little taller as Sons ans Daughters of the American Revolution .

    2. Curt Malone
    3. Originally, western Virginia consisted of a few very large counties. As these counties became populated, the early settlers found it extremely difficult to travel over the rough terrain for great distances to visit their county seats for legal and other purposes. Eventually, local groups of influential settlers petitioned the Burgesses, and later the legislature to create a county in their immediate surroundings. This subdivision of counties continued for about a hundred years resulting in our present 55 small counties. 2. Thanks to Jean and Kathy and Sandra, my curiosity has been satisfied. Now I can give my son-in-law an answer. When he looked at the map to find out where Preston County was he said, "Whoa, look at all those counties!" Why are there so many? Well, no mother-in-law wants to admit she doesn't know everything, does she? <grin> So now I can give him an answer. Actually, Michael is a charmer, and he is at least as brighter as I. Una. PS Jean, did you figure that out about the counties? It makes so much sense now that you explained it. I've been on a lot of those "little red lines" on the map, and you are right. The traveling is slooooow. Yes, I've always been a flatlander, by golly.

    2. It is even more interesting to look at the progression of these counties as they were formed. For instance, the lines we're tracing may have stayed in same area but were in Orange, Augusta 1745-1777; Hampshire 1777-1786; Hardy 1786-1788; Rockingham 1778; Pendleton 1788 to present. It is important to note the formation dates when tracing a person. Sandra
