I believe that a research trip to Germany uncovered this and other family information. As to the children of Nicholas Harper, his will, signed 17 Feb 1818, proved 7 April 1818, lists: "eldest son Henry" received land in Bath County; "second son Peter" received land on the South Branch; "third son George" received land adjoining Peter; "oldest daughter Barbara (wife of William Michael)" received land in Crabbottom; "second daughter Ann Elizabeth (wife of Peter Lightner)" received land in Bath County; "third daughter Elizabeth (wife of Nicholas Harper)" received land in Kentucky; "daughter Catherine (wife of Conrad Rexroad)" received land in Crabbottom; "fifth daughter Mary (wife of Henry Swadley)" $500 from son Henry and $100 from Peter; "sixth daughter Sarah (wife of Henry Hevner)" received land in Munroe County; "daughter Susanna (wife of Adam Lightner)" received land in Bath County. No mention of a wife. Executors: son Henry, sons-in-law Adam Lightner and Peter Lightner. Witnessed by John Fleisher and Peter Harper. Henry Penninger, Sr. signed his will 23 May 1796, proved 5 September 1820. It lists wife Barbara eldest son Henry second son John eldest daughter Elizabeth second daughter Cathreen third daughter Mary fourth daughter Barbara fifth daughter Anna Elizabeth sixth daughter Susanna Executors: oldest son Henry and son-in-law Nicholas Harper Signed in German "Henrich Banenger" Henry wrote two codicils. The first signed 17 June 1815 states that daughter Susanna has already received "more than her proportionate share." She was to get $5 more. It was witnessed by Henry Hull and Susanna Paulser. The second signed 1 July 1820, mentions daughters Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, Barbara, and Ann Elizabeth. It doesn't mention his wife. It also states "My son-in-law Nicholas Harper being dead son-in-law Henry Fleisher to be executor in his place." The information on the wills of Nicholas Harper and Henry Penninger, Sr. were extracted from Rick Toothman's "Pendleton County (West) Virginia Probate Records". Frank Cochran Madison, Alabama

In response to all of those you inquired about the Skidmore CD-rom, the details and a lot of information on the family can be found at: http://www.skidmoregenealogy.com/ Nedra Nedra Dickman Brill, Certified Genealogist [email protected] Registrar, Oregon State Society DAR Regent, Portland Chapter, DAR Historian, Henckel Family National Association Coordinator Pendleton County, WV, [email protected] CG is a service mark of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license after periodic evaluations by the Board. http://www.bcgcertification.org/
I have Obediah Lambert married to Mary "Polly" Nelson. Marriages of Pendleton County Virginia 1788-1853 revised by Jackie Puffenberger 1992-1993, 35, Obracah Lambert md. Mary Nelson June 23, 1852. Obediah Lambert and Isaac Obediah on bond. Obediah Lambert was born abt 1830 and Mary "Polly" Nelson was born June 15, 1830 and died March 21, 1906. Grave Register Pendleton County WV 1977, 89, Polly Hedrick born June 15, 1830 died March 21, 1906 wife of Daniel Hedrick. My problem is I have Mary "Polly" Nelson married to Obediah Lambert with children Jesse abt 1853, Rachel abt 1855, Charles 1856, and Jemiah C abt 1859. 1860 PENDLETON CO., (W)VA CENSUS 900-835 Obediah LAMBERT 29 Va Laborer Mary 29 Va Jesse 7 Va Charles 4 Va Jemiah C. 1 Va. I also have Mary "Polly" Nelson married to Daniel Hedrick with children Noah abt 1854, Mary J. abt 1855, Sarah abt 1856, Laonia abt 1861, Jemima abt 1861, and Isaac abt 1867. 1870 Pendleton County, WV Census--Wes Cochran, 26, Daniel Hedrick age 54 Va farmer, Mary age 39 Va keeping house, Noah age 15 Va, Mary J age 14 Va, Jemima age 9 Va, Laonia age 9 Va, Isaac age 3 WV. Mary "Polly" Nelson is the daughter of Isaac Nelson and Catherine Pennington. All I know is that Mary could not have been married to both men at once and I am not sure if the information I have here is correct since the marriage source I have for Mary and Obediah doesn't list parents. I'm almost certain that Mary is the wife of Daniel Hedrick since the source for her death lists him as her husband. I have searched the 1900 WV Census and can not find Obediah Lambert or Daniel Hedrick in the census. And that the Mary Nelson listed in the marriage source to Obediah Lambert may have been a different Mary Nelson. Can someone nudge me in the right direction. Thanks Debbie
Nedra's message about the Henckels included a reference to the Pendleton County Skidmores that got my attention. My wife traces her ancestry these Skidmores but the early information looks somewhat "iffy". I am seeking reliable information about the genealogy of the PHOEBE SKIDMORE (B. Ca. 1801, D. 1860) who married Hiram Vance in 1821. Phoebe is believed to be the daughter of JOHN SKIDMORE (B. 1768) and NANCY JOHNSON (B. Ca. 1770, married JOHN around 1792. John Skidmore is believed to be the son of JAMES SKIDMORE (B. Ca. 1730, M. Ca. 1750-55, D. 1810). All contibutions of information about this SKIDMORE line will be sincerely appreciated. Happy New Year to all, Harvey at Washougal, WA
The Haslacker sisters were early Skidmore historians, at least of the Pendleton County branch, and contributed greatly to The Henckel Genealogy. Capt. John Skidmore is my ancestor. A revised Skidmore Genealogy by Warren Skidmore is available on CD-rom. I do want to remind anyone researching these families that The Henckel Genealogy was published almost 40 years ago and much is based upon "family records." Since then we have published an additional 1300 pages of additions and corrections to the families presented in this Genealogy. There are many, many minor errors and omissions but also some major ones in the Pendleton County families which are proven and DOCUMENTED in the "Henckel Genealogical Bulletin," begun in 1970 by Mary Harter and others, now deceased. Major Pendleton County errors: 1. Hannah Hinkle was NOT the aunt of President Andrew Johnson. 2. The wife of Abraham Hinkle #59 was Catharine Miller, not Teter. Contact me privately is you are interested in subscribing to the Bulletin. Jackie, I just wanted to send you a great big thank you for mentioning the Henckel genealogy was available online through some libraries. I had been looking for this resource for references to my Smiths (found on pages 199 and 256) and was surprised to see so much documentation on the Skidmore's as well. I would have never known this resource was available if you hadn't mentioned it. McClain is an excellant place to order books. They have a fairly large selection of WV related books. Jean
I've order books from them and they are quick about sending them when paid by credit card. No complains from me. The Family History Libary has the Henckel Genealogy on microfilm, but you may have know that. Also, if your libary has access to Heritage Quest online they have it imaged. Some larger libraries will let you access Heritage Quest over the Internet from home. I go to my libarie's home page, click on online databases, and once I find HQ I get prompted for my library card number, and then I can use it at home. I had little luck finding a paper copy of the Henckel Genealogy a while back when I was looking for it. I found They rest Quietly at http://www.mcclainprinting.com/list.asp?myfilter=T I've never ordered from them, so I can't comment. You may find it other places as well if you run a Google search.
