If found will post it here. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 2:33 AM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Mill > Betty > > Have you ever run into a reference to "Yeager's Cave"? > > I have a reference to relatives who were married there (probably someplace > in the Shenandoah Valley) but if it ever existed I have been unable to find > it. 3. Dear Rosemary, I have seen several places that Michael Arbogast married Mary Samuels. But I have never seen the proof of this. Do you have it and if so would you share where it is? It would be a great thing to break that brick wall. Also any tradition of where Michael Arbogast came from? I have seen ship lists with this name, but more than one ship list, so which is he? Do you have this? Sorry I can't help on the Yeager. Jean

    3. I should get out my map to refresh my memory, but I believe the town of New Hampton was established by my gggg grandfather John Snyder. Crabbottom or Crabapplebottom was an area that started above the present Pendleton/Highland Co line. I do not think the area ran clear down to the present road to Monterey. At least it is not shown that way on early maps. The settlers of this area mostly came down from the north, not up from the south. The first of them I believe was Michael Arbogast. The Snyders/Sniders first were above Crabbottom. John got his first land in that area when his father bought it for him. The Waybrights also settled in that area. Does anyone know why they started calling this area Bluegrass? Jean

    3. I am a Gum descendant, having two Gum lines as well as two Hevener lines that were at times in Pendleton County. It is well known that Judy Garland and, of course, her daughters are descendants of the first Gum in America, Roger. The problem has been connecting a couple of generations ‹ I'm not sure whether it's her grandparents or great grandparents ‹ to the main line. Her real name was Frances Gumm. There is a very good book on this family called "Leaves from the Gum Tree." It is available from the Virginia State Library if your library has a network connection to other libraries. I will do a look up to see what is said about Judy Garland's parents. -- [email protected] Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709-3818 Telephone: 330-454-2376 > Do any of you GUM descendants have a connection to Judy Garland ? 3. Catherine was the daughter of Andrew (Andreas) Yeager and Elizabeth Sommers. Below is some additional info. I can't vouch for all of it, but Clifton Yeager has done the the most thorough Yeager research I know of. One of Catherine's brothers was John, who married Phebe Annis [sp] Hull, a sister of Captain Peter Hull. Another of Catherine's brothers was Philip. According to Clifton's research, Philip is the ancestor of test pilot Chuck Yeager. http://genforum.genealogy.com/yeager/messages/223.html Posted by: Clifton Yeager Date: February 03, 1999 at 13:06:01 In Reply to: Re: YAEGER of PA by Christie Stewart Johann Andrew YEAGER (Jorger), son of Hanss Martin YEAGER (Jaeger) + and Maria Barbara REICHERT +, was born 1741 at FalknerSwmp,NewHanover, Montg,Pa. 3. Steve, you raise some really interesting questions. I checked "VA Militia in the Rev. War" by J.T. McAllister, which contains many of the men's service declarations, and the only person who mentions serving with Peter Hull is James Steuart, who served under him in June 1781. And John Hogg, who was one of the youngest people on the 1779 muster list, in his declaration of service does not mention ANY service before Jan 1781. Verrrrry interesting. I wonder if the original muster list still exists somewhere and if the date is clearly readable. Of course it's possible that Peter was captain in 1779, was discharged or transferred for awhile, and returned to take over as captain in 1781. Most of these men only served for 2-3 months at a time, then left, then returned to service as needed. --Holly

    2. Bill Rexroad
    3. A note about Crabbottom: The present-day town of Blue Grass was indeed formerly called Crabbottom, as others have pointed out. There was another area also called Crabbottom, sometimes Crabapple Bottom, as seen on old maps from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The exact boundries of the Crabbottom area are not clear on these old maps, but it was north of New Hampden and appears to continue on north for a ways beyond where the South Branch River turns east toward Blue Grass. This is important when determining where ancestors lived because an old reference to Crabbottom often meant the area, not the town. Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas

    3. The father of Capt. Peter Thomas Hull b. 1733 was Peter Thomas Hull b. 1706 in Germany. I have Barbara Ann Keith as his wife with a marriage date of 1750. I have also seen Barbara Penniger in some information online, but have seen no documentation. Do you have any documentation of this marriage? I know that he served as sheriff of the new Highland County VA after it was formed. There are several Peter Thomases in a row so the only way I can separate them is by the birth date. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nedra Dickman Brill" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 21, 2003 5:14 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Peter Thomas Hull > Who was the father of Capt Peter Hull of the Revolutionary War fame who > married Barbara Peninger (not Barbara Keith)? > > Nedra > > At 03:53 PM 3/21/2003 -0500, you wrote: > >If I have it right, Peter Thomas Hull and his wife, Sussanah Dieffenback, > >are my sixth great grandparents. 3. I am very sorry, but in my research I have not found any reference to Benjamin Wagoner. I believe from what I have found that Frederick is one of Peter's sons, but I have not followed that line as the one that is mine is George. At the present time I am mostly working on the Yeager line---Andrew, John, Andrew, Peter Dilley. The Father of the first Andrew was the Immigrant Hans Martin Yeager (Jger on the ship manifest). The family settled first in Pennsylvania and then Andrew 1 moved down to Augusta County. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 20, 2003 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Mill > In a message dated 3/19/03 12:36:05 PM Pacific Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > > My ancestors, Peter Thomas Hull, d1776 was one of the original settlers. 1. Re: [WVPENDLE] Peter Thomas Hull - Capt. Peter Hull's 1779 militia company
    2. Steven J. Zuraff
    3. Capt. Peter Hull (d.1818) was the eldest son of Peter Thomas Hull, who settled in Crabbottom (now Bluegrass, Highland Co.) The latest research by Phyllis J. Hughes suggests that his mother was Susannah Dieffenbach rather than Peter's unknown first wife. Although their six daughters are more or less accounted for, the research strongly suggests that Peter Thomas Hull and Susanna Dieffenbach had only three other sons: Adam, George, and Jacob. They had no David, John, William, Franz Philip, etc. Those individuals belong to unrelated Hull lines. (Capt. Peter's oldest son was named Henry, however.) Unfortunately even Phyllis hasn't been able to come up with any new evidence which would definitely identify the maiden name of Capt. Peter Hull's wife Barbara. Now with regard to Captain Peter Hull, you may recall that on p.194 of Oren F. Morton's "History of Highland County," there is a muster roll, as recorded by Nicholas Seybert, for Captain Hull's company, second battalion, Augusta Co. militia, 1779. However, there seem to be some inconsistencies. For example, according to Chalkley's Chronicles, Peter replaced John McCoy as captain in 1781. So how could Peter be the captain of this same company in 1779? Could he have been the "acting" captain in 1779? (I'm groping at straws here.) Second, a few of the soldiers in the list lived long enough to apply for Revolutionary War pensions. I've looked at the ones for Adam Arbogast, Jacob Hoover, Michael Hoover, and Henry Whiteman. None of them ever mentioned serving with or under Peter Hull. Henry Whiteman wrote that he did not even move to Augusta County from Pennsylvania until the fall of 1780. The simplest answer I can think of is that the date of 1779 must be wrong. Maybe it was a postwar muster roll instead. At least that would explain why Peter Hull is omitted from the pension declarations. Since a number of individuals have used this muster roll as evidence of their ancestors' active participation during the war, I thought it might be worth discussing. Any comments? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nedra Dickman Brill" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 21, 2003 2:14 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Peter Thomas Hull > Who was the father of Capt Peter Hull of the Revolutionary War fame who > married Barbara Peninger (not Barbara Keith)? > > Nedra > >
