    2. Surprised to read that many people believe that residents of Appalachian are not only uneducated and intermarriage only happens in those states. It was not uncommon for first cousins to marry throughout America in the early years. In fact intermarriage is common in European royalty even today. My earliest known ancestor came to what was then New Amsterdam, now New York City. I am not only proud of him but also all of my wonderful ancestors that settled in West Virginia. Florida resident with WV roots.

    1. [WVPENDLE] St. Michael's records
    2. Bill Rexroad
    3. There was a discussion on this list several weeks ago about the old record book from St. Michael's Church. I reported that the book had been translated and transcribed by a George M. Smith (thought to be a university professor) in 1966. The people around Sugar Grove never saw the book again after Smith borrowed it to do this work. Nedra suggested some places the book might have gone. One of those was Bridgewater College at Bridgewater, Virginia. I volunteered to check there since I would soon be in that area. Here is what I found: The library archivist at Bridgewater College is Ruth Greenawalt. She told me they did not have the book and that George M. Smith had never been on the faculty there. She suggested I check with Eastern Mennonite University at Harrisonburg. The library archivist at EMU is Lois Bowman. She said EMU does not have the record book from St. Michael's. However, Ms. Bowman knew George M. Smith from having worked with him on another book several years ago. She said he was a Lutheran minister, not a university professor. He was also a historian and had compiled and published other records like those of St. Michael's. Smith retired and moved to Florida several years ago. He died there about 2001. His papers were donated to Handley Regional Library at Winchester, Virginia. Kate Parker in the archives room at Handley Library in Winchester showed me George M. Smith's hand-written translation and transcription of the St. Michael's record book. But the book itself was not there. She suggested checking at the following locations: Library of Virginia at Richmond Wentz Library, Gettysburg College at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Roanoke College at Salem, Virginia Over. 3. Hello Cousin Charles Yes I am one of those persons who thought anybody from the Appalations was dumb and a hick, what I should have thought was how wonderful the close-knit family life by being brought up in that area I also thought that eveybody born in WV was dumb because they inter-married so frequently into their own families, what I learned later was that intermarriage does not necessarily mean a person will be born as a dumb Hill-billy, it only means that persons get so inter-related that sometimes it id hard to keep track of how one person is related to another. In all my 33 years of research, I have come to long that my upbringing could havre been so wonderful as to be born in West Virginia or its area. I do not now consider the people of West Virginia to be slow, I just think that most of them have different values than those of us who were raised in a more fast-paced world than theirs. I am so very proud that one quarter of my ancestors came from West Virginia. John Denver said it well in his song about this wonderful state. Maybe when accomplished, such will enlighten my fellow West Virginia residents that we need to make much needed constructed changes on how we do business? For example, I has taken me upwards of 20-years to promote the development of a "multipurpose" building complex, similar to those where I have competed in a major activity, in other States, and now it is happening. This is how s-lo-w we are to react to change.

    2. Bill Rexroad
    3. In the basement of the Pendleton County courthouse I came across some old court records dating back to the early 1800s. The name of my 4g-grandfather was listed in one of the books and I also saw names of interest to others on this list. Examples: Pam Rooney would probably be interested in the several Coil names entered - George, Jacob, Adam, and others from the 18-teens and -twenties. Ray Flesher might like to see the entries of the name Fleisher - John, Benjamin, George, Andrew, and Henry F. These books are badly deteriorated. They will be dust in a few more years. Apparently the books have not been transcribed and doubt was expressed that LDS had microfilmed them. It would be a worthwhile project for one of the Pendleton County historical or genealogical groups to preserve these books, possibly by having the pages laminated. Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas

    3. There was some discussion on the list several weeks ago regarding the location of the Rexrode cemetery - the one that is south of Franklin adjacent to highway 220. I measured the distance on my recent trip there. Now write this down everybody: It is exactly 7.2 miles to the cemetery from the end of Franklin's main street (where the street turns west at the low water bridge). Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas

    3. Does anyone know anything about an Ada Malcom who raised her children in the Doe Hill area of Highland County. She later married a John Bowers - I think John may have been from the Pendleton County area. Ada's children were Mattie C. Malcom(my great-grandmother born 1884 who married Charlie Snyder), Annie Geneva Malcom(married Bucker J. Price), George Howard Malcom, Virgie C. Malcom (married George Kyle Malcom), Emery Malcom and Bruce Malcom. According to census records, Ada had 6 children, but I cannot find any record of her husband or the father of these children. I also have a photo of their homeplace in Doe Hill. Also looking for burial information on Ada and John. Linda [email protected] Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt.
