Samuel's parents are in conflict!! On the colonial Frederick Co. Md. census there is a Samuel in the household of Leonard and Tabitha, I believe he was 14 yrs. old on this census putting his birth at 1762. Researchers state that his tombstone shows he was born in 1757 - I believe he died in Ross Co. Ohio. There are stories that he married Margaret Cohagen, an Indian princess in North Carolina. I don't believe that has been proven. There are several theories on who his father was. If Samuel's father is not Leonard, then what happened to the Samuel in the household with Leonard and Tabitha? Also, I found a reference today in Hardy Co. Will and Deed Abstracts for a Samuel Day in 1798, it had to do with a will. Leonard had several references in Hardy Co. in the late 1700's. There was also two references to a Bazle Day. This doesn't prove that Samuel is tied to the Leonard Day family, but it does show that he may have had some dealings in Hardy Co. Also, the SAR recognizes Leonard as Samuel's father. It seems to fit that Samuel's father is Leonard. What really bugs me is, where did he come up with those unusual names that he named his children, for example Demoville Talbott Day, Hedgeman Day, and Ovington Day!! And of course there is the tombstone!! Any ideas on this? This is from Morton's History of Pendleton County which has a lot of mistakes. Ezekial was born 1767 I believe, so how could he have a son Basil who would marry Susannah Lamb in 1794. The Basil Day that married Susannah Lamb was Ezekial's brother and they were sons of Leonard. Morton was confusing Basils and Ezekials of two generations. I believe although it isn't proven that Samuel is Basil and Ezekial's brother. State of Virginia Enumerations Hampshire County - 1784 Day, Leonard 6 2 So it seems that Leonard Day was in Hampshire (Hardy) Co. as early as 1784. Here is the reference to Leonard Day in Hardy Co. Va. In Hardy Co. Deed Book 1 pg.292: 8 June 1789;James Stone and wife Rebeccah Stone to Leonard Day, 217 acres for 30 pounds on the north face of Branch Mountain adj. to Col. Nevill and the great Cacapon. That would mean that Basil was 18, Ezekial was 22, and Samuel would be 27 when Leonard bought this land. Leonard was born in 1736 according to church records in Prince George Maryland. If anyone else has information on this family I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Becky
Hello, I have looked into this family and found that they stem from a Leonard and Tabitha Day originally from Prince George Co. Maryland. In 1776 they are listed on the Frederick Co. Maryland colonial census: 1776 Colonial census Maryland DAY BAZEL , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 5 DAY ELIZABETH , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 11 in house of Petter Becraft DAY EZEKEL , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 9 DAY JOHN , Lower Potomack Hundred, Fredrick Co. Md. 8 DAY KATHARINE , Lower Potomack Hundred, Fredrick Co. Md. 71 DAY LENERD , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 40 DAY MARY , Lower Potomack Hundred, Fredrick Co. Md. 16 DAY SAMUEL , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 14 DAY SARAH , Lower Potomack Hundred, Fredrick Co. Md. 40 DAY SARAH , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 7 DAY SUSANAH , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 11 DAY TOBITHA , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 36 DAY TOBITHA , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 2 DAY JOSHUA Bush River Lower 100, Harford Co.MD. 15 in house of Joseph Rose Notice Basil Day is five years old in 1776, putting his birth at 1771. In 1794, age 23 he married Susannah Lamb in Pendleton Co. Va. I found Leonard Day in Hardy Co. soon after the Rev. War.(perhaps he moved his family there after the war) and he was a Pvt. in the war. His son Samuel Day was also in the Rev. War. I have the references to Leonard Day in Hardy Co., I will have to look for them. I also saw that Basil Day owned land in Hardy Co. that later became Grant Co. Basil Day and Susannah Lamb had a daughter Elizabeth Day who married Christian Hedrick in Pendleton Co. The "signers" are actually the bondsmen or sureties. USUALLY one represented the brides interests and one represented the grooms interests. They were USUALLY family members but no always.
