    3. I understood that 2 gggg uncles on my Channell side got federal grants in Licking Co. Ohio in early 1800s. Since they were not my direct line I never checked it further, but a lot of Rev. veterans from Va. settled around there. I know they were not Virginia land grants as they were in Kentucky. The fact that land bought from the state of Va. was called a land grant has led several to believe these were Rev grants by mistake as I am sure you are aware of, Nedra. Jean

    3. Sometimes the tax collector made notes as you describe. What records did you get on microfilm? Typed? The typed ones are typescripts made by the CCC during the depression. A microfilm of the original would be identical to that original. There have been a few years of the Pendleton County tax published by various individuals. 3. Until 1792 Kentucky was part of Virginia. "In 1777 Fincastle County, Virginia's General Assembly divided Fincastle County into three parts and created Washington, Montgomery, and Kentucky Counties. The act creating these counties described Kentucky County as being "to the south and westward of a line beginning on the Ohio at the mouth of Great Sandy creek and running up the same and the main, or northeasterly, branch thereof to the Great Laurel Ridge of Cumberland Mountain, then south westerly along the said mountain to the line of North Carolina." In 1780, Kentucky County was divided into three counties -- Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln. Within just a few years, six more counties had been carved out of those three. Between 1784 and 1792, people living in those counties held ten conventions on the question of statehood; on 18 December 1789 Virginia's General Assembly passed an act allowing Kentucky to apply for statehood and on 1 June 1792, those nine counties became a state, with the full consent of Virginia. 3. I believe Ezekial is the son of Leonard Day originally of Prince George Co. Md. He moved his family to Frederick Co. Md. and fought in the Rev. War. According to SAR records, his son Samuel also fought in the war. The family moved to Hardy Co. Va. after the war and part of Pendleton was Hardy at the time (I believe that is right?) This family is on the 1776 Colonial Census from Frederick Co. Md. Ezekial Day was 9 yrs. old in 1776, thus birthdate would be 1767. Here is that census......... Frederick Co. Maryland colonial census: 1776 Colonial census Maryland DAY BAZEL , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 5 DAY ELIZABETH , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 11 in house of Petter Becraft DAY EZEKEL , North West Hundred, Fredrick Co.Md. 9 DAY JOHN , Lower Potomack Hundred, Fredrick Co. 3. Try clicking on this hyperlink, or copy/paste the entire URL into your browser window. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=4247558&e=642690&s=50&size=l After the first map appears, click on the 1:25,000 'button' for a closer look at the Shaws Fork and Ridge area. 850 acres would have covered well over a square mile (640 acres) so you can see that much of the Isaac Johns land must 'not' have been cleared (see the scale at bottom of map), or it has since grown back, or possibly the Johns acreage was an elongated area along the creek...or possibly you should move the map to view further southwest toward the Cowpasture River to find cleared land along Shaw's Fork. Another thought: People of early times didn't need a great deal of cleared land to grow a little wheat, flax, maybe some tobacco, a few fruit trees and a large vegetable garden, leaving the timber for hunting and for the pigs to forage -- and others who rented, squatted or were allowed to live on Johns' land didn't need much cleared land either. Some only needed enough for a garden since they primarily worked for the land-owner or others, or maybe worked an artisan trade of some kind for a living. A clearing of 5-10 acres, or even 20 acres, probably wouldn't be shown on this map. I know it would surely be fun to drive our 4WD along that 'road' that follows Shaws Fork and some of the other creeks and runs -- although a person just might get 'called down' back in there...dontcha suppose? Hope this helps a little. Still looking for 'any' info for Joseph McDaniel-McDonald along the South Branch, pre-1768. 3. I am also interested in the Day family. According to Morton, Ezekial Day married Leah Payne. Her parents are unknown. Their children were Basil, Leonard, Lewis, Mary, Rachel, Abigail, Tabitha, and Morgan. Morgan and Leonard are found in the 1850 Census of Pendleton Co. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. 3. The original 13 colonies/states gave their own land grants. The Federal government gave grants in the other states. The Virginia Military District is in Ohio and grants for Virginia service were also given in Kentucky. For later wars the locations kept getting farther and farther westward. War of 1812 had grants in Iowa and Illinois, for instance--Acts of 1850 and 1855. The Day family is not mine and I am not sure that I have anything on the early family. Just a smidgeon on one man who married into my Haiglers and his children. 3. I guess that I have been lucky because all of my husbands ancestors were where they said they were. True, that some people died and the lands changed hands between the making of the map and the 1850 census. His ancestors have held the land since the beginning and still have some of it in the family. What I am looking for in the Pendleton map is the area they called Shaws Fork. I am interested in finding the approximate location of the land owned by Isaac Johns. Suppose to have been about 850 acres. It was told to us that my husband's gggrandfather lived on the Johns land and that part of it later was taken to make Highland Co. Have you got any idea where this is? Any help would be appreciated. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Rexroad" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]ootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 11, 2003 6:59 PM Subject: [WVPENDLE] Map > Susan - > > Be careful with that old map of Highland County. 3. Shaw Fork is situated in the northeastern part of Highland County. It is between the Cowpasture River on the west and Highland-Augusta County border on the east. It flows southwesterly and joins the Cowpasture River at the small town of Liberty, which is located two or three miles below Highway 250. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Baldwin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 11, 2003 7:03 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Map > What I am looking for in the Pendleton map is the area they called Shaws Fork.
