    1. [WVMorgan] COMBS obit lookup
    2. Matt Combs
    3. While going through my notes, I think I may have stumbled across the death date for William S. COMBS wife "Mattie". I jotted down some of the WV COMBS from the death certificate index while looking for William's info reported to be 1933, and while reviewing my notes I noticed a "Mattie COMBS - October 27, 1932". Could somebody who lives near Martinsburg look this obituary up for me in the Morgan Messenger? I believe copies are available at the Martinsburg library. I "read" through the entire year of 1933 looking for William's obituary, but did not find it. I am wondering if his wife died in late 1932, possibly he went to live with one of his children elsewhere and died there. William S. COMBS is buried in Camp Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw, WV. I don't believe his wife is buried there. They lived in Lineburg, WV (Morgan County), perhaps she is buried around there. 1. [WVMorgan] LYONS obits
    2. Matt Combs
    3. "Mrs. MOORLAND, mother of Mrs. John LYONS died last Wednesday a week and was buried from the M.E. Church on Friday" - The Morgan Messenger, 04 March 1897 NOTE: This is the obituary for Mary Margaret MCBRIDE MORELAND. "Mrs. John Lyons, who had been ill for some months, died Wednesday night. She leaves a husband and seven children, the youngest being but two years old. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church Friday. Interment in Camp Hill Cemetery." - The Morgan Messenger, 21 July 1898 "Mrs. CRABTREE of Cumberland, Miss McCULLOUGH of Oldtown, Miss GOLDEN of near Cumberland, and Mr. and Mrs. John MORELAND of Maryland were here attending the funeral of Mrs. John LYONS." - The Morgan Messenger, 21 July 1898 NOTE: This is the obituary for Amanda Rebecca MORELAND LYONS. More info is available at http://combsfamily.tripod.com/lyons.html I got this info during my recent genealogy research trip. This info came from the WV Archives in Charleston, WV. I highly recommend a trip there. The grounds are beautiful. The staff is friendly. You will notice these are from the Morgan Messenger newspaper. If you have Morgan County family and haven't found info elsewhere, I recommend trying this paper. It is available at the WV Archives and at the Martinsburg, WV library. The WV Archives have a wonderful death certificate archive, starting with 1917 (by year for the entire state). I was looking for William S. COMBS death info, and found this index to be invaluable. I didn't find him by the way. Did find he was listed in the Morgan Messenger as not paying his taxes for 1932 at Lineburg, WV. He reportedly died in 1933. The Archives also has the Morgan County death records on Microfilm (going back to mid 1800's). I found some people there, but not my William S. COMBS. That set of films is invaluable as well. They also have the 1900 and 1910 Soundex index. It lists the names by Soundex code, then alphabetically. It is really useful. This does not account for a check being cashed in February and the books not arriving until late in May! Especially with the folks at Butternut being so hard to reach and not returning calls or emails. With reports of many errors in the books and such very slow service, my advice is BUYER BEWARE! You may or may not get what you paid for.

Then she emailed me, the following day, and said it would go out on May 17 by UPS and that she would give me a tracking number and I should receive it by May 21. I have not received a tracking number from her, nor have I received the book. Buyers Beware!

    2. Charlene Turner Smith
    3. Roberta asked if the information we share will be published. The answer to that is eventually someone will either find the same information or obtain it through someone else sharing it and then hopefully document for themselves and then put it in a book. Information such as can be found in a Census record or at a county courthouse is public domain - ANYbody can obtain it if they know where to look and are willing to do what it takes to get it. Thus we cannot "copyright" it. I would hope that ALL of us are compiling our family data in such a way that eventually it can be donated to the Morgan County Historical and Genealogical Society and thus be made availalbe to anyone who visits the Genealogy Room at the Morgan County Public Library. This whole rootsweb thing is about family making connections and sharing information. Now, to address the question about documentation. I have contacted the person who put me onto this idea (she heads up several "state" family group sheet projects) to see if the form used can be adapted so that should a submitter NOT name a source the source will automatically pop up as "not documented". I am still waiting for a response about this and like the rest of us who "work" on rootsweb projects, she is a volunteer with a whole 'nother life going on away from her computer. I will say that at this point the most "votes" have been cast in the "sounds like a good idea" area. Thankfully, we've had folks bring up some very good questions that should this come to be will make it better for the time and thought put into it. Charlene

    3. Maybe someone on the list has a better method for naming the sources than the one I'm using. When ever I get information from someone I always put the name of the person and brief discripition of the information in "Notes". Is there a better place to put the source information? 1. [WVMorgan] Family Group Sheet Project
    2. This is something to think about. I, too, have had bad experiences in sharing data with individuals searching my surnames. I have seen my family's name on the Internet with the submitter as the ones I had sent information to. They didn't even bother to "hide" the date of birth on living individuals. The worse was when I saw my parent's name with details on the Internet. I wrote the person and was told, "well you sent it to me." Another is when you have spent a lot of time in research and you need just a name or two. Someone contacts you about sharing your information, but their idea of sharing is to receive your data but not send you any information in return. My next question to WV Morgan Co. is, "Will the information be available in your genealogy library?" "Are you planning on putting this data into a book and selling the books?" Sharing is one thing but sharing for profit is another. Roberta

    2. Wilmer L. Kerns
    3. There are pros and cons. I lean toward putting the information out there. One exception is if I plan to publish something that resulted from serious research at a high cost (travel, fees, motels, Xeroxing, etc); that there is little chance of anyone duplicating my findings, I don't distribute it before publication. I've had several experiences similar to Sharon. On one occasion, I reluctantly gave several group sheets to someone who promised not to publish nor distribute further until my book is published, including submittal to companies that publish on CDs, such as WFT. This was VALUABLE data-- I foolishly included the source notes. Well, the person lost no time submitting the information for publication on one of the CDs. They even failed to eliminate the first footnote that warned not to submit this material to any organization that publishes the information on CDs. I was shocked, and decided that no one would ever be able to hijack that kind of information again. But for much of the material that I have developed, I share it, especially if it is not in the pipeline for publication and the information can be secured in courthouses and other public sources. Wilmer L. Kerns -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Banzhoff [mailto:shabanz@intrepid.net] Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2003 9:29 PM To: WVMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WVMorgan] Something To Think About - Family Group Sheet Project I learned the HARD WAY - I handed over 10 years of research and about a year later found it posted on the web as their own. They have marriages documented as FACT, when there has never been documentation to substantiate it. I have a few things I felt strongly about but I had no proof and I had it documented "IT IS MY BELIEF...........". When I saw it on the web, it was documented as a FACT. What I had spent 10 years working to find and document had been trashed in minutes. The line I passed on was MY maternal line. When I saw the material on the web, they even included MY MOTHER-IN-LAW, who had no ties whatsoever to the person posting. The person REALLY screwed up my line for sure - making things fact that never were. This is why you can't take what's online as gospel - you have to do your own research to be sure it's correct. What we get from others may be a starting point. We have too many genealogy pirates to just see something and take it as truth. The word soon gets out on those Pirating Genealogy and passing it off as their own. ALWAYS give credit to the person whose work you are adding to your own and MOST OF ALl, NEVER state something as a FACT, if it is only the belief of another - DOCUMENT IT AS SUCH.
