    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FEC.2ACE/969 Message Board Post: The 1820 census shows a Joseph Smith family with many children living in Morgan county, WV (VA). I'm quite sure that one of the sons was named Joseph as described below in this biography. I am interested in knowing who his brothers and sisters were. --------------------------------------------------------- From "History of Saline County, Missouri" St. Louis Missouri Historical Company, 1881 Joseph Smith, P. O., Slater. Son of Joseph and Mary Smith, was born June 17, 1814 in Morgan county, Virginia. His father and mother were both natives of Virginia. He remained until he was nineteen years old on his father's farm. In the spring of 1838 he moved to Fayette county, Ohio, remained there several years, and then returned to Virginia. In 1842 he married Miss Elizabeth Compton, daughter of Jonathan and Mary Compton, of Virginia. In 1844 he moved to this county, and settled first near High Hill. In 1846 he purchased the farm he now lives on, to which he has added by subsequent purchases, until it now amounts to ninety-four acres of land. Mr. Smith has five children, three sons and two daughters. Two of his sons died in early manhood, and also one of his daughters, dying after she was married. The other daughter is married, and living, with two children. Mr. Smith has made his property by industry and economy. He is a member of the C. P. Church.

The originial land deed for the first Michael Michael's land purchased from the Caldwell Family locates the land at the forks of the Sleepy Creek and also the second Michael Michael's will also locates his land as lying at the forks of Sleepy Creek. Courthouse records indicate the second Michael Michael had 154 Acres of the 354 Acres of the originial land purchased from the Caldwell Family.

James S. Michael did considerable research in Morgan County in 1936 and conculded that Jacob Michael was the father. Unfortunately, he did not include references in his summary and he, plus all of the people who collaborated are now gone. Census records show that there was a Jacob Michael living in the area at the time and study of the age profiles indicate he could be the father. The entry you cite is also found in records at the Morgan County Library and was available at the time James S Michael did his research.

I have never seen the name spelled Steganious. I have never heard of Charles (1850-1902) but would very much like information about him. The line I am researching goes through Albert and Mary's son Charles Albert Steganius (born Aug 6 1891 in Connellsville, PA and died June 1970 in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, PA)
