Her death certificate lists parents as F. and E. Snyder. I thought they might be Frederick Snyder and Elizabeth Pennybacker who married in Berkeley County (now Morgan) 25 January 1785. A Frederick Snyder was taxed in 1787 in Berkeley in with other Morgan County names. A Frederick Snyder appears in the 1820 and 1830 census in Morgan County. Elizabeth Pennybacker Snyder moved to Vinton County, Ohio and applied for a widow's Rev. War pension in 1850 stating that Frederick had served in the war from Hagerstown MD and died in 1840. However, in the 1820 census there were also two more Frederick Snyders close by, one of Jefferson County and one in Frederick Co. To complicate it more George Washington Shockey is quoted in a letter stating that his grandfather was Frederick Snyder of Hampshire Co. who moved to Vinton County, Ohio in 18! 21. If that is the case, who was the Frederick Snyder still in Morgan County in the 1830 census? I show these Snyder marriages in Morgan County: John Snyder m. Catherine Henry 25 Sept 1822 (this is also my line) Frederick Snyder m. Nancy Richardson 24 Nov 1823 Jacob Snyder m. Mary House 3 July 1836 John Snyder m. Catherine High 30 May 1829, with Frederick Snyder as bondsman. Can someone help me sort this family out? They don't seem to have stayed around as I find no Snyders/Sniders in the 1840 or 1850 census in Morgan County. I also have an autosomal (extremely high) DNA match with a Catherine Snyder b. 1784 m. Henry Simmons from Pendleton VA. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Well, it looks like I have dug into every possibility to find this "blackfoot indian". My grandfather says it's from his Dad's side (DeHaven, Carl C. DeHaven whose father was Charles Grantham DeHaven), but his grandmother was Sarah Luttrell and she doesn't point to being blackfoot and now my grandfather's mother's side does not as well. My grandfather, John V. DeHaven, is 89 years old and all of his life he has talked about this blackfoot indian. He says its from his dad's side, the rest of the family says its from his mom's side. I was hoping to get some type of "proof" for him, but it seems that won' t be able to happen. Thanks again for your help! Yes, I am trying to confirm Ferdinand's wife's name before digging deeper. Here is the things I know. Ferdinand Johnston died in 1944. I have the death record where my great great grandmother Margaret Johnson DeHaven (from her on out it seems Johnston was now spelled Johnson, all my family members remember Johnson as the last name, but records show otherwise). So I do know that the Ferdinand Johnston who died in 1944 is the father of my great great grandmother. Now, in a news articles from Winchester Evening Star in Aug 3, 1954 it states she is survived by two brothers, Robert Johnson and Frank Johnson and three sisters, Anna Cooke, Viola Hovermale (whose first name is Mary, but went by her middle name Viola) and Bertha Hinds. There is no mention of other children, although they may have passed before Margaret. Are you able to send me a copy of the article you found the from Morgan Messenger from 16 Nov 1944? I would love to read the article and get details from there? Thanks again! Christina Romano Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. M. to Catherine EVANS 25 Dec. 1833 at Guilden Sutton, Cheshire. There are several John Lowes of this approximate age so it is hard to know which birth records (which JOHN) to request. Per the 1881 and 1871 censuses, he was born in Chester. Details: John and Catherine lived in civil parish of St. John the Baptist, Chester, for most of their lives; John listed as a nailor or nailmaker on several censuses. Catherine died ca. 1891 in Leeds, where she was living with daughter Martha Mitchell as a widow. John apparently died between the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Trying to determine parents and birth date of Catherine Evans, b. ca 1815, and John Lowe are enumerated with an Edward (age 53) and Mary (age 60) Evans on the 1841 census of Chester. Edward is listed as a millwright and John as a nailor. Since the 1841 census does not state relationships, we can only infer that these might be Catherine's parents, and of course sometimes there are errors in recording names. Per the 1871,1881, 1891 censuses, she was born in Chester. There are at several Catherines with a birth date that might match, but none with the exact names of the apparent parents in the 1841 census and a Chester birthplace. These include: Catherine b. to Edward EVANS and Ann and baptized at St. Mary on the Hill, Chester, 21 June 1815; born to Edward EVANS and Ann, bapt. 23 June 1816 at Dawley Magna, Shropshire; born to Edward EVANS and Mary, March 1816, Beguildy, Radnor, Wales; and Catherine born to William EVANS and Mary, 26 Nov. 1817 in Anglesey, Wales; and handfuls of Catherine Evans born 1813-1814 in North Wales. Clues? In the 1881 census, John is enumerated with his grandson James LOWE and granddaughter Jane, but listed as married, not widowed. A Catherine LOWE of the correct age for his wife, birthplace Chester, and 'married' is listed on the 1881 census as a 'visitor' in the household of widower John Williams, age 67, in Llanbedr, Denbighshire, Wales. John Williams is about the same age as Catherine and born in Gwyddelwern according to this census. Could he be a relative or in-law of Catherine's? (In the 1871 census, Williams and his children are also in Llanbedr at the same residence, with a Griffith Evans and wife Jane next door. William's wife Anne, 41, is listed in the 1861 census.
