They were formed by the states for the protection of each county. Because of the war, the militias in the Counties with southern allegiance, therefore contained many confederate sympathizers as members. There are many accounts of these militia regiments that contained BOTH union and confederate sympathizers even after the war began. This often caused a lack of trust when using these units. In the Counties of what is now West Virginia and in the southern section (that is, Monroe, etc.,) these militias aided in fighting against the union army when called upon since they contained primarily southern men. Remember however, they were not regular units, but older or very younger males, and were supposed to be used to defend their county. It is therefore possible that Harvey E. Meadows was in the unit but a unionist, since during the war he moved to Kanawha County and named his children after patriots (George Washington [Washington Greenke Meadows], Sam Houston [Houston Meadows], and Ulysseus S. Grant [Ulisus Grant Meadows]) I have followed Harvey E. Meadows for many, many years searching in vain for his parentage. Harvey Deskins Meadows, therefore, crossed my path many times and with much information. We are very close to connecting Harvey E. to his father. Just need more documentation.
