Dear Bob Zingo, in your listing of Henry Hoke descendants, you have Robert Young marrying "Mary" Hoke. Actually, her name was Margaret Hoke, and they were my ggggrandparents. Their daughter, Mery Young, married Samuel Hellems in Monroe Co., WV, and they lived near Gap Mills, WV, where he was engaged in brick making with his brother Thomas. Samuel and Thomas Hellems/Helms were the sons of Strawder Helms, who was b. in Botetourt Co., VA, and died in 1889 in Craig Co., VA, where he had been sheriff after the Civil War. Strawder was murdered by a man named Alex "Deaf" Tucker, over a property line fence. Tucker wasn't arrested until the following year, and he was turned loose about 6 months later, even though he shot Strawder twice and beat him over the head until he was dead. There was a story about this murder in the Monroe Watchman. Strawder was the son of John Helms and Rebecca Drummond, and Strawder's wife was Elizabeth Kem of Wayne Co., IN, daughter of Thomas and Mary Centz Kem who were married in Botetourt Co., VA. Dorothy Miller P.S. I have been in contact with you previously concerning the Hoke lineage, as another connection is Barbara Soffer who 1st m. Henry Daugherty then William Henry Hoke in 1815. Barbara and Henry Daugherty's daughter, Leticia/Letty m. David Bostick in Monroe Co., WV, my ggggrandparents, too. I am eagerly awaiting a copy of your Hoke information so I may compare it to the information I have which was written by the children of Christopher Hoke who m. a Biggs in the 1930s when they worked for the WPA in Monroe Co., WV.
