REVOLUTIONARY DECLARATIONS--AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA. page 497 John Bradshaw's Declaration, May 7th, 1833: Aged 74 years on second February, last. In 1776, when 18 years old, he volunteered as spy and was a private in Capt. John Henderson's Company; in 1777, the same; in 1778, the same; in 1779, the same; his duties were to leave Cook's Fort on Indian Creek, now in Monroe County; two went together, his companion being generally James Ellis, but sometimes went in company with the late Col. Samuel Estill, of Kentucky; took stands at the gaps and low places of the mountains between William Lafferty's plantation on New River and the head waters of Laurel Creek, where they met the spies from Burnsides' Fort; they traversed the country, which included the head waters of Big and Little Stony Creek, the Indian Draft, a branch of Indian Creek, and the headwaters of Wolf Creek; they carried their own provisions, being sworn never to build a fire.
