    3. I am very much interested in this John Lewis that you mention... do you have anything else on this individual? do you know what township he was located in/near? In addition, I have Lewis family who owned property in Monroe County, created entirely of Greenbrier County in 1799... lets share... Patrick Kenney 2323 W. This John (W., I think) Lewis owned about 2,000 acres in Allegheny County that bordered on Greenbrier County. He was born approximately 1787 and died about 1869. He was married to Elizabeth Harman. I've seen references to his having been born in both Pennsylvania and Maryland. Any help with this Lewis family would be appreciated. Bill Johnson Harrisburg, PA

He lists land of Andrew Lewis of 1200 acres at Sinks above the head of Indian Creek in 1780. Another of Andrew Lewis 0p acres, head of Indian creek and Greenbrier waters in 1780. He also has some other info on them: Colonel John Lewis fled from Ireland in 1792 nd ssettled 2 miles east of Staunton, Va, near the hills. He was the first permanent settler and founder of August county. Had sons, Thomas Andrew, William, and Charles. He states they were tall, powerful men, influential, masterful, and thrifty. Thomas lived near Port Republic in Rockingham County and was a surveyor of Augusta Co. Andrew lived in Salem, Va. He was an Indian fighter, and won the battle of Point Pleasant. Charles was the youngest, and he lived on Cowpasture River. He was killed at Point Pleasant. William born 1724, died 1813. He moved to Sweet Springs Valley in 1783. His first home was at the Sweet Chalybeate Springs. Also had one at Lynnside in Monroe Co. John, a son of William, married a daughter of Colonel William Preston. He was a Major and fought in Washingtn's army at Monmouth. He succeeded his father at Sweet Springs and died there in 1823. John's son, William L. Lewis, lived in S. Carolina, for several years, but returned in 1848 and ran the establishment at Lynnside. John's son, John B Lewis, became a cadet at West Point in 1826. There is a bit more, but hope this helps answer some of your questions. Phyllis

    1. [WVMONROE] FRIEND, Graham
    2. Charles FRIEND Sr. (born @ 1730) died by 1816 in Monroe Co., (W) Va. In 1816 his estate was sold in two auctions, one was the estate in town (tavern), and the other was the estate "at the plantation" on Turkey Creek. Administration was by William GRAHAM. It's believed a daughter of Charles FRIEND had married a James GRAHAM, but no further info. has been found. Was the Admin. a grandson? The proceeds of the estate sales were invested in land near Peter's Mtn., and the "heirs" are taxed on that land till 1831, when apparently the widow died. (she was a much younger second wife.) What happened to the land then? I have not found any sort of probate record disposing of that 261 acres. Who were the "heirs" ? Does anyone have access to local records that might help me tie up loose ends? 2. Ed Marsh
    3. Indian Creek is a stream of southern Monroe County that flows into the New River at Junta, Summers County, WV. There were many settlements along this Creek in the early days when this area was all Greenbrier County. Monroe was separated in 1799, and Summers was created after the Civil War. I believe Indian Creek is so named because of a large Indian meeting area/camp that was located along the New at the mouth. For more data, see "New River Early Settlement", by Patricia Johnson; and/or "West Virginia, The State and Its People," by Otis Rice. For a map, here is a map from Mapquest.com. http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_find?link=btwn%2Ftwn-map_results&random=670&event=find_search&uid=uf_5rate34adw7ne%3Ar2dwt00y1&SNVData=3mad3-5.fy%2528ats9yt_%2529r7glr8%253bpq%257c0u6%2Cp7%253bz2u.hqu%253b%2528_%251225m45qr%253d%2519H_%253dGG_lztldr%2528.56z51u%2528l%2524efiid%257c7xbfjw.lq%25286&address=&city=Crumps+Bottom&state=&zip=&country=&Find+Map=New+Map If this does not work, just go to the mapquest search area and type in Crumps Bottom and WV (under state.
