    3. Hi all, Just a word to say that there is some bad data going around the internet about the Humphreys of Greenbrier/Monroe County, VA/WV -- and I'm responsible for some of it I admit. Samuel Humphreys, (Sr.) (1741-1821) immigrated from Ireland to PA to Grenbrier County, VA sometime in the 1770's. His son, Samuel Humphreys, (Jr.) (c1776-1855) was married to a woman named Polly (according to the 1850 census). Samuel, (Sr.) had a first wife whose name is not known -- she is the mother of Samuel, (Jr.). Samuel, (Sr.) remarried to Grizilla Donaldson Cavet in c1787. She was the mother of Robert Humphreys of Greenbrier (1788-1849) who married Jean Wylie on 3 Feb 1807 in Greenbrier. Samuel Humohreys, (Sr.) had eight children and no one is sure which wife was the mother of some of them. Possibly, Robert is the only child by his second wife, Grizilla (also called Grizzel, and/or Griselda). About Polly, wife of Samuel, (Jr.). She is said to have been Polly Vance, but also Mary "Polly" Jarvis. I have not been able to track down just where the surnames of Vance and Jarvis originated, but I admit to passing this information along. Samuel had two, possibly three brothers who came to the Greenbrier. Certainly, Robert (c1735-1809) was on of these. He married Elizabeth (surname unknown). They lived on Second Creek which became Monroe County in 1799. The had eight children also. John Humphreys (1748-c1808) also lived on Second Creek and he married Catherine (some say Dixon/Dickson). He fought at Point Pleasant and received land grants for his service. His daughter, Isabella, is said to have married Richard Dickson (1734-1818). They lived on Muddy Creek (present day Aderson, WV area). Some researchers suggest that Richard Dixon/Dickinson might be the sister of Catherine who married John Humphreys, but that would make the marriage of Richard to Isabella pretty odd. I suspect that Isabella might have been a sister of these Humphreys boys -- no proof. As to Samuel Humphreys, (Jr.), he moved to Indian Creek (present Monroe County) around 1800. His neighbor was brother-in-law Rev. Jacob Cook who married Samuel's sister Isabella. My Humphreys database is full of Johns, Samuels, James, and Roberts -- you have to be real sure which one you are talking about Finally, as I said, there may have been a fourth immigrant brother. In the 1780's, Samuel, (sr.) received a land grant on Anthonies Creek (present Greenbrier). His neighbor (according to the grant document) was James Humphreys. This James died in the 1790's. Ed

As a matter of fact, Chessie had a son, Johnny Clara, that Uncle Emmett and Aunt Jennie adopted, since they had no children of their own. They are all buried at New Hope Methodist Church cemetery. Aunt Jenny married at least twice after Emmett died around 1950 of black lung disease. I have been to the church and have seen their records on the cemetery. If you have access to the Summers County or Monroe County Cemetery books, they have given all the info to them. Their older records were destroyed in a flood in the church basement many years ago. I do not have a lot of info on the Hudson family. But, of course, am familiar with them as they married into my family. I will get back with you when I find more info Phyllis

    3. I just wanted to take this time to apologize to everyone for how far behind I have fallen with the Archives. This has been one heck of a summer :) But it's been fun, just extremely busy. I have updated the WV counties with files recieved during July, so those are already online for you to see. I am now working on the Virginia Counties. The first update I do will be for files rcvd in July, so if you've sent a file in August, it won't be on this update. I need to finish one month before I begin on another. My youngest just started kindergarten and I haven't started back to work yet, so next week I plan to spend getting everything all caught up. Assuming nothing goes wrong, I should have time to get it all done. Thank you all for your patience with me :) Also, I have inherited three new counties in Virginia and will begin working on those web pages after I have finished my work on the counties I have pending files for. Those counties are Goochland, Henrico, and Hanover. So be thinking of anything that you'd like to submit for those counties and soon I'll be posting new files there as well. Thanks again for all of you who have supported me and the archives. I hope to be more prompt in the future :) Jeannie ************* Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx
