I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who responded to my earlier apology regarding the Archives. You have all been SO supportive!!! It really means alot to me. I would have preferred to answer you all individually, but there were so MANY responses!!! I did want to answer a couple of questions that I received though. Yes, I do take care of the archives on a volunteer basis, and I continually stretch myself to take care of as many counties as I can because I, like you, want to make sure that new files do continue to be uploaded and that the counties are cared for. Sometimes I have the time & energy to do a fantastic job updating the pages on a timely basis, and sometimes, I just don't have what it takes. But all in all, I love taking care of the Archives and watching them grow. I think it's a wonderful way to volunteer my time & hope I'll be able to continue to do so for a very long time. I have completed the uploads for July, minus a couple of small changes that need to be made and also minus the scanned documents. My next goal is to complete those & then I'll move on to the new files received in August. Then I will send notification to the individual county lists for all the new files uploaded during July & August. After that, I will start work on organizing some new counties that I have adopted. Once those pages are updated, I'll subscribe to the mailing lists for those counties & notify the folks there that the counties now have a new archivist who will TRY to post new files on a timely basis :) I'm sure those folks will be happy as I don't believe those counties have had anything new posted in quite some time. Once again, thanks so much for your support and all your kind words!!! It's good to know that there are real people out there (and nice ones too!) that are benefiting from my time & effort. Thanks again, you're the best!!! Good evening, I think I got this wrong the last time I posted, so here goes again . . . Edward WYLIE, b. unknown, d. unknown, parents, unknown, m. 25 apr 1822, Monroe County VA (now WV) to Sarah CHRISTY, b. ca 1805, Monroe County VA d. o. James M. CHRISTY II and Elizabeth GARTEN. Anyone have anything on this WYLIE family? Parents? Children? Thanks a bunch, Bill Hobbs
Hi. I live in NC & am having difficulty finding information on the Derieux or Derrieux family that lived in Monroe County from about 1790 to at least 1850's. My ggggrandmother, Mariah Agness Derieux, married Joshua Hall 11/27/1831 in Monroe County. They lived there the rest of their lives. Mariah (also seen sometimes as Marie Davis Hall) was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South of Union (?)...does that church still exist? I cannot find anything on Joshua or Mariah's parents or siblings. Their children were George W., Lewis Caperton m. Nancy Ellen Fisher, Samuel Robert m. Serena A. Mitchell, Augustus C., Charles Matthew m. Sarah Bostic, Mary, John Allen, William Maston m. Delilah Taylor and Mary Agnes Murdock, Fannie Catherine m. Abel Alexander Taylor, Sidney, James Oliver m. Harriet Harvey and Mary Etta Comer, & Jane C. Lewis is my gggrandfather; Lewis' son Thomas Alexander Hall (m. Sallie Ann Taylor, d/o James N. Bowyer & Mary Catherine Taylor) is my ggrandfather. Their homeplaces were on the Knobs outside Union. I have a marriage bond for Henry Thomas Jefferson Derieux who married Sarah Taylor in Monroe County 12/15/1817 (she died shortly after & he went to TN) signed by Henry Derieux & John Hull. There was a William H. Derieux who was a tailor in Union around 1830; he married Elleanor Morgan, d/o Benjamin Morgan and Anne Ellis. Their son, William P.H. Derieux (also a tailor), married Virginia Green Pegram, d/o John W. & Fannie Pegram approx. 10/26/1856. I have also seen references to Lewis Derrieux, Civil War soldier, and Frank Derieux in Morten's, "History of Monroe County." If anyone can provide any additional information on Derieux/Derrieux or Joshua & Mariah Hall's parents/siblings, I would be grateful. This has become a true brick wall! Thanks, Drema

Corinne, Alderson, West Virginia, is in Greenbrier County on the banks of Muddy Creek. The creek is the boundary line for Greenbrier and Monroe Counties. Rev. John ALDERSON is the founder of Alderson and the Baptist church in 1781. ALDERSON organized the first Baptist church in the Greenbrier Valley. Patrick, This is not what you want, but it is a jumping off point: Marriage Record of Elder John Alderson from 1776-1798 from John W. Wayland's "Virginia Valley Records", published in Strasburg, VA in 1930. The marriage records, I believe, start on p. 155. Interesting note: On 5 July, 1780, Alderson, a Baptist married James CHRISTY, a Methodist (and first preacher of the Rehoboth Church, oldest extant church west of the Alleghenies, to Sarah SCARBOROUGH, a birthright Quaker. I am Looking for the family bible or transcription of it; that belonged to Samuel Lewis Sr. that died in Monroe County, West Virginia (Greenbrier County before 1799) bordering Botetourt County & Kanawha County and later Mason County... Samuel died on or about 16 Aug 1811 it is listed in his inventory... Additionally, it likely went to his son Zebulon who handled his final affairs. thanks in advance, Patrick Kenney 2323 W.
