Hi all, I've been following the string on Hoke Cem. and the Vance messages. I have a question for someone who does the VANCE line in the Monroe/Greenbrier area. Samuel Humphreys (c1776-1855) was listed (1850 Federal census - Monroe Co) as married to wife "Polly age 66" - born c1784. Some say she was a VANCE (others say Jarvis -- Morten). In later censuses, her son said that she was born in Maryland. Out of curiosity -- are there any VANCES in the area who came from MD? Are there any Mary "Polly" Vances that are unaccounted for who might have married in Monroe/Greenbrier c1800. Samuel moved from the Anthonies Creek area of Greenbrier down onto Indian Creek around 1800. His sister, Isabella, married Rev. Jacob Cook who had a grant for many hundred acres on Indian Creek c1798. Samuel's land bounded on Cook and several Maddys. Does any of this place Samuel near the VANCE area of settlement? Ed
Bonnie..Do you have dates for Rosanna Vance? Was William a Vance? Do you know where they lived? Questions!! Questions! I have a little WV Vance info and would like to find more. Every bit helps. The Vance info I have indicates their origin was in PA to WV, possibly 1780/90. Thanks, Va
I was wondering if William had a sister named Rosanna Vance?

He fought the entire four years of the civil war, and as a result of being wounded in the war, he lost sight in one eye. He drew a pension for a short while. Then suddenly the pension stopped in 1885 without any explanation at all. After this he drew no more of it. I would like to know if there was a reason his pension was stopped. Shouldn't he have drawn it until his death, June 26, 1900? Since he did not receive this money that was entitled to him, shouldn't his two remaining daughters, Mrs. Mollie Meadows Shepherd and Mrs Cora Meadows Falls (?) receive this amount that should have been paid from the time it was stopped until his death? I would appreciate your checking on this matter and letting me know. Thank you very much, Yours Truly, Mrs. H. B. Nelms" This Harvey Deskins Meadows has affidavits explaining his being in the Mercer County Militia, and in the summer of 1861, was called to Princeton to take the oath of allegiance to the confederacy. He refused and has an interesting account of hiding in the backwoods with other union sympathizers, where he was pursued by the 17th Virginia Cavalry C.S.A. He was in hiding for 9 months. He met with the Union General Cox, whereby he was told to gather all loyal Virginians. When Harvey returned to his home, Cox was forced to retire back toward Charleston. He was eventually captured with W. H. Meadows and L.D. Bucklin and was to be sent to Richmond prison. He was offered enlistment into the confederate army vs. prison and chose the former. His first opportunity to escape was at the Battle of Greencastle, PA in July 1863 (Gettysburg Campaign), where he deserted the confederate ranks. He was sent to Fort Delaware (Union Prison) where he asked General Schaeffer to take the Oath of Allegiance, which he did. He was awaiting a letter from his uncle Jacob Meadows from St. Joseph, Missouri to vouch for his loyalty. He eventually joined Company B, 1st U.S. Volunteers and remained in the US Army from 1/25/1864 to 12/5/1865 where he was discharged at Leavenworth Kansas. There is also an affidavit from W. Possibly William McKinley Helms was the son of Thomas Helms and Julie Arthur, if he was born abt. 1870. Can you ascertain some dates on him and on Grant Hellems? Thanks. damiller@inetone.net
Dear Sandy, Charles Nathen Helems was b. 7/11/1875 in Craig Co., VA, son of William Mathew Hellems and Hester Ann Baker. He was b. 1831 in Botetourt Co., VA, and she was b. 1843 in Monroe Co, the dtr. of William Washington Baker and Sarah Jane Worsham. William Mathew Hellems was the son of John Helms and Rebecca Drummond m. in Botetourt Co., VA, in 1818. William M. was listed as a shoemaker. I show that Nathan Helems had 2 sisters, Dona Ellen Helems b. 1879 at Paint Bank d. 1947, and Martha Musto Helems b. 1884 in Craig Co., VA. d. 1956. I have not taken the Hellems line beyond the above-mentioned John and am still researching, and if you will provide the names and dates of Nathan's descendants, as well as his sisters, I would be most appreciative. Please contact me further direct at damiller@inetone.net . Thanks.
I, too, have been doing some research on the Monroe Co. Vances. My gggaunt, Rebecca Jane Bostick b. 1838 d. 1932 at age 94 was married to Caperton Vance at the age of 18 in 1857. He fought for the Confederacy, then with the Union Army and was killed in the Battle of Cedar Creek. They lived at Glace (sometimes called Laurel Creek). She was called "Becky", and Caperton was 26 when they married, son of William and Jane Spradlin Vance who were married in Monroe Co. in 1827. Caperton's sister, Sally A. m. H. C. Holesapple in 1857. I have 5 single spaced sheets on their descendants in My Family Tree, which is not on the web yet. I had written my tree in book form over the last 40 years, and since I retired, have been entering it into the computer as a Family Tree Maker project, as well as researching other lines through the internet. My e-mail address is damiller@inetone.net, and I would prefer to communicate direct. Thanks. Dorothy Miller
Dear Bill Johnson, Yes, we probably met at Ethel Lowance's funeral, for she was a neighbor of my grandmother Bostic in Ronceverte. Her daughters, Mary Jane and Emojean are two of my long-time friends (abt. 1947). In fact, Mary Jane and her husband, Doran Cornwell, are coming to spend a couple of nights with me this week. Doran's brother, Estell, died in his sleep last night in Ronceverte. I've been dabling in Lowance/Eagle/Shafer geneaology on Mary Jane's and Emojean's behalf for several years (when I run across anything about these surnames when I am researching my Helms/Hellems ancestors and others.). Send me your e-mail address and I will give it to them, as both are in touch with me almost daily. I would also prefer to communicate with you direct rather than on the rootsweb site. It sounds like you have a lot of information on Lem's family that I do not have, and I would be delighted to share this. Dorothy Miller damiller@inetone.net
Hello To All, I am looking for information on Nathan Helems died 8-4-1910 in Paint Bank, Va. Craig Co. He had a son William McKinley Helems born 1-28-1896. Nathan Helems name could appear as C. Nathan Helems. He was a great carpenter, and built the old Hotel in Paint Bank, Va. Thanks, Sandy in Ohio

They were formed by the states for the protection of each county. Because of the war, the militias in the Counties with southern allegiance, therefore contained many confederate sympathizers as members. There are many accounts of these militia regiments that contained BOTH union and confederate sympathizers even after the war began. This often caused a lack of trust when using these units. In the Counties of what is now West Virginia and in the southern section (that is, Monroe, etc.,) these militias aided in fighting against the union army when called upon since they contained primarily southern men. Remember however, they were not regular units, but older or very younger males, and were supposed to be used to defend their county. It is therefore possible that Harvey E. Meadows was in the unit but a unionist, since during the war he moved to Kanawha County and named his children after patriots (George Washington [Washington Greenke Meadows], Sam Houston [Houston Meadows], and Ulysseus S. Grant [Ulisus Grant Meadows]) I have followed Harvey E. Meadows for many, many years searching in vain for his parentage. Harvey Deskins Meadows, therefore, crossed my path many times and with much information. We are very close to connecting Harvey E. to his father. Just need more documentation.
