    1. [WVMONROE-L] Family of John Reed of late 1800s Monroe Co., WV
    2. I am looking for information on two families that lived in Monroe Co., WV during the latter half of the 1800s. The first family is that of John M. REED (c 1839 - c 1910?) and his wife Sophia (c 1848 - 192?). They moved to Monroe Co. from Floyd Co., VA and had the following children, all of whom were born in Monroe Co.: Andrew (b 1868), Joshua (1870 - 195?), Mary (b 1872), Elkaney (1874 - c 1952), Josie (187 - c1948), James Henry (my g-grandfather; 1884 - 1968) and John "Jack" (c 1887 - c 1932). Henry and Jack were well known for the musical abilities (fiddle playing and guitar) and lived in the Glen Lyn, Va and Hinton, WV areas, respectively, during their adult lives. Josh and Elkaney apparently resided in Cashmere, WV and spent most of their adult lives there. As for the rest of the siblings (Andrew, Mary and Josie), not much info is presently known. The second Monroe Co. family I'm seeking info on is the Joshua UNDERWOOD family. Joshua (1826 - 19??) was also from Floyd Co., VA and moved his family to Monroe Co. about the same time as John and Sophia REED. He and his wife, Mary (a.k.a. Polly or Betsy; c1825 - 191?) were the parents of Sophia and her several siblings and apparently resided in the Lindside area near Peterstown. Any information (including names, dates, places, etc.) on the ancestors, family members or descendants of those listed above would be very much appreciated, especially if it concerns the family of John REED. Thanks a lot, Bob

    1. [WVMONROE-L] Marriage puzzler
    2. Tanya & Bill Hobbs, Eryn & Bronwyn
    3. Good evening, I have a puzzler. Several HOBBS siblings married in Monroe County in these years: 1823, 1831, 1832. These siblings were, respectively, Mahala, Catherine and Susan, all daughters of James HOBBS who moved from Bedford to Monroe in 1820. The Puzzler: Now I find another HOBBS marriage in 1820, to wit: John HOBBS m. Martha EADS 7 Aug, 1820. The given name John is not familiar to me. Could this be a lost sibling? Could it be the middle or first name of the brother I know as Madison? If anyone has more than the bare information on John and Martha, or if anyone can tell me where to look, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bill Hobbs

My secondary evidence supports the following: > > 1. Jordan1 Meadows was born abt. 1798. He married (1) Susannah Payne > October 11, 1821 in Giles County, Virginia. He married (2) Susan Thomas > abt. 1826. What we need is a marriage record for Jordan and Susan Thomas, we can't even tell from the census records which Susan/nnah he was married to. Maybe someone has access to marriage records I copied pages from cd229 but there is only the one marriage in 1821, his name could also be spelled Gordan Sandy in Fla

    3. Well, I wouldn't be surprised. Hannah Eads' brother Henry Eads married an Elizabeth Sams 12/23/1839. Is there more than one Elizabeth Sams in Monroe Co? Anna Sams was also the mother-in-law of their brother Samuel Eads who married Elizabeth Jane Honaker. John and Allie married 1 Nov 1855,, she age 30, and he age about 52. This was the 2nd marriage for John Bowyer, His 1st wife Anne June Blythe Murdock who died of TB on 5 Feb 1855. In 1850 the Monroe Co Census shows that Mary Vance is age 72, and daughter, Precilla, age 24. John Vance was perhaps deceased by this time. I believe Mary lived into the 1860's, dying in Monroe Co.
