    3. A few years ago I had my mom's birth cert. changed because it had her mother's name wrong. It said Sheila Hankins instead of Thelma Hawkins. I can see how they may have made the mistake if the handwriting was really bad. I had to show three forms of proof and it took a few weeks, but I thought it was important to get it done. Adina

    1. [WVMONROE-L] Re:COMICAL GENEALOGY POEM
    2. Hope you all enjoy this. It was given to me by a fellow genealogist. KEEP YOUR SUNNY SIDE UP I went looking for an ancestor I cannot find him still. He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will. He married where a courthouse burned, He mended all his fences. He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. Census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame. And every 20 years, this rascal changed his name. His parents came from Europe, They could be on some list of passengers to the USA, but somehow he got missed. And no one else anywhere is searching for this man. So I play geneasolitare to find him if I can. I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed. But the weather took the engraving and some vandal took the rest. He died before the county clerks decided to keep records. No family Bible has emerged in spite of all my efforts. To top it off this ancestor, who has caused me many groans, Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES! ANONYMOUS Hope you all enjoy and have a wonderful weekend Crystal :)

    2. --part1_4214ae05.24918d34_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hey all, The following came across another list today and I thought it might be of interest to some of us. On the Archibald and Sedley Crews confusion.......it just goes to show you that typos are not just a modern day occurrence and that all records are not written in stone, but they're the only thing we have to go on sometimes. BTW When ANCESTRY.COM had the Virginia marriage records free on-line they had my 3x's Gr grandfather Simeon Riner married to his daughter Lucinda on the same day that my file shows she married Sylvester Ballard................Go Figure. Did someone originally fill in the wrong blank or was there a transcription error somewhere in the past? Later, Dan Cook Researching: RINER, THOMPSON, HUTCHISON, and Lavinder. Plus many allied and descendant families in Monroe Co., Virginia/West Virginia 1819 to the present. ============================================================ EVIDENCE FOR PROOF Evidence is the means of proving or disproving a fact. There are five types of evidence: 1. PRIMARY: Primary evidence is that from a record when the record itself is the cause or result of the action or fact to be proved. Examples are: Vital records, Wills, Church Records, Tombstones etc., This is the best evidence. 2. COLLATERAL: Collateral evidence is when it is collateral to the purpose of the records but never the less an integral part of the record: Example: If a man speaks of his daughter by her married name, it signifies a marriage when no marriage record can be found. 3. SECONDARY: Evidence consists of statements made by persons of facts they know of their own knowledge: Examples: Oaths, Old Letters, Depositions. 4. CIRCUMSTANTIAL: If two or more facts are so related, that if one which can be proved by a higher type of evidence is true. When the other is necessarily, true. Example: Record shows a daughter of a man and later he marries someone, it shows he was married before and had at least one daughter. 5. REPORTED: Rumor, Hearsay, County Histories, and Many Biographies. These are the least trustworthy but good for clues. SOURCES OF GENEALOGICAL MATERIALS 1. PRIVATE: Family Bibles, Ledgers, Diaries, Photograph Albums, Samplers, Old Silver, Fly Leaves of old Books, Old Letters, Old Wills, Diplomas, Citations, Discharge Papers, School Records, Insurance Claims, Baby Books, Grandmother Bracelets, Etc. 2. PUBLIC: Census, Pension, Military, Land Tax, Deeds, Laws, Church Records, Court, Probate, Vital Records, Mortality, Immigration, Naturalization, Obituary Notices, Cemetery Records and Tombstones, Register of Voters, Maps, and Plat Books. City Directories and Telephone Books. 3. COMPILED: Printed Genealogies, County & Local Histories, Periodicals, Compiled Tax Lists, Cemetery, Etc., Newspapers - Articles, Brand Books. ============================================================ --part1_4214ae05.24918d34_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <[email protected]> Received: from rly-zc04.mx.aol.com (rly-zc04.mail.aol.com [172.31.33.4]) by air-zc04.mail.aol.com (v59.34) with SMTP; Thu, 10 Jun 1999 12:16:33 2000 Received: from bl-14.rootsweb.com (bl-14.rootsweb.com [204.212.38.30]) by rly-zc04.mx.aol.com (8.8.8/8.8.5/AOL-4.0.0) with ESMTP id MAA07502; Thu, 10 Jun 1999 12:15:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from [email protected]) by bl-14.rootsweb.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) id JAA06299; Thu, 10 Jun 1999 09:15:12 -0700 (PDT) Resent-Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 09:15:12 -0700 (PDT) From: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 12:11:54 EDT Old-To: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 4.0 for Windows 95 sub 13 Subject: [LOONEY-L] Documentation Resent-Message-ID: <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Resent-From: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] X-Mailing-List: <[email protected]> archive/latest/2676 X-Loop: [email protected] Precedence: list Resent-Sender: [email protected] Recieved this from another list,it is written by Betty Stokes, and is probably the best advice I've seen on documenting evidence. Burdette, aged 74 years and 9 days. She was the daughter of Archibald and Nancy Crews and was born in Amherst Co., VA on 13 Jan 1817. At the age of 8 years, she, with her widowed mother, removed to this county. At an early age she accepted Christ and united with the Greenbrier Baptist Church at Alderson. She was united in marriage with Madison Burdette on 26 Feb 1833. Together they became members of the Broad Run Church when it was constituted and always took delight in doing their part in all the work of the church, of which he was a deacon. He preceded her to his reward in 1881. She had long been a sufferer from cancer in the face. Of their children, 6 sons and 5 daughters survived them, one son having died in infancy. These and their descendants number about 90. She died as she had lived, calmly, peacefully, hopefully; and may those she so faithfully consoled and blest never forget her words, follow her example and meet her beyond the flood. The Rev. P. L. Glover officiated at her funeral. A large number of friends and relatives were present notwithstanding the inclement weather. Amid the tears of sorrowing friends she was laid to rest in the silent tomb there to await the call of the resurrection morning. May we all live so as to meet her in the fadeless fields of God's eternal glory. (signed "J.P.B., Wolf Creek, WV, March 23, 1891.")

    3. Her father was James Augustus William Caperton. He was a Captain in the Confederate Army. I will have to sent you the dates and everything after I get home. Don't have it with me today. Don't quote me but I think that he married Rachel Wiley - for some reason I am drawing a block on who he married. Been working my fathers side lately, All I have on my mind is Plumley, Vest, Bennett, Moten, Lilly, Grimmett, etc. Where does Caperton Connect with you? Yes, there are two Hugh Caperton, father and son. The son is called "NewRiver" Caperton. I don't remember off hand which one built Elwood. The older Hugh, father was John Caperton. Some say that he is from France and came to America by way of Ireland. There is also a story that John was born in Ireland and killed a man in a fight and fled to American where he met and married Mary Thompson, who was also born in Ireland. 1. [WVMONROE-L] MY SURNAMES BEING RESEARCHED
    2. Hi, Is anyone out there researching the ORR family? My Orrs came from Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland to Greenbrier County, West Virginia in 1821. They stayed the winter there and moved to Monroe County WV until about five years and then to Xenia, Greene County Ohio and finally ended up in Selma, Delaware County Indiana. Kind regards, Tammy
