    1. [WVMONONG] William JOHNSON
    2. II Keller
    3. I am trying to find William Johnson’s parents and siblings. He was born (1781-1790) in MD. He married Mary Eliza CONNOR, daughter of John and Sarah CONNOR before 1818. In 1801 William bought land on the west side of Muddy Creek, adjoining Edward Jones. He served in the War of 1812. He was living in Fayette County, Ohio in 1820. He died 28 July 1874 in Champaign County, Illinois. Trying to find a William Johnson born in Maryland without an exact birthdate is like hunting for a needle in a haystack. I would appreciate any help you can give me. teacups3@yahoo.com

    1. [WVMONONG] Austin family
    2. Blythe Frausto
    3. Hello all. I am new to this so please bear with me. I am researching my Austin line from Monongalia County and cannot find any death info on my 2x great grandfather Jesse Austin (b.1816) and hoping someone might have some other insight. I have tried just about all resources I can think of without actually visiting the area (on my list). Jesse first married Mary Ann Darnell and had 3 (verified) children, she dies in 1859; he then married Ann Abigail Robe in 1865 and had 3 more (verified) children. The last I have him is WV 1880 census for certain. A reference on AFAOA website (Austin Family Association of America) has a researcher suspecting he moved/died in Jay County, IN to be closer to where his older children were however, I have not found any evidence. His oldest daughter (from second marriage) Virginia married John A Howell in Oct 1884 in Monongalia. His wife, Abby, is in Barton County, KS with her family by May 1886 (no sign of Jesse) and marries again about 1889 (still looking for that marriage license), divorces in 1900 and marries again in Jun 1902 in Reno County, KS. She died in 1908 and is buried in Hutchinson, Reno County. The 1895 Kansas census indicates she moved to Kansas from WV, which would indicate she did not establish residence anywhere else. Jesse's second daughter (from second marriage) Emma Jane (my great grand) obit says she moved to Kansas when 18 (about 1885); she married in Barton County in 1889. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Resources? Thanks for any help! Blythe Frausto

There is a bio. for Dr. Marmaduke Dent, son of this John Dent and Margaret Evans, on pp 482-485 of Samuel Wiley's History of Monongalia. The bio. names all the children (& their spouses) of John and Margaret and says that John was a Captain in the frontier militia under Margaret's Father, Col. John Evans. Also, according to Wiley, John Dent was a "member of the Virginia Assembly, a justice of the peace, and served a second term as Sheriff." > Amelia (Yost?) d. @1861 wife James Barker d. 1832 > Annarah Barker (dau Amelia and James) d. 1855 1st wife of Jarrett Lynch > Evan Stewart d. 1844 and wife, Jane Arnett d. 1838 > Benjamin Wilson d. bef 1834 and wife Elenor -------- d. bef 1834 On p. 717 of Wiley's 1883 book, this Benjamin Wilson of Grant is listed as a pioneer settler of the area with the settlement date of 1775 and on p. 46 it lists him with John Dent as having settled on Scott's Run (now Dent's Run). On p. 727, Wiley has a section on Zoar Baptist Church, organized in 1852 by Rev. G.F.C. Conn (my 1st cousin four times removed) . Among the first 12 members of this church were Amelia Barker and "Ann A. Barker" Other listed members were "Garrett Lynch," Wilson Crowl and wife Nancy Dent, Ann Martin, and James Arnett and wife "Ann Arah Arnett." Wiley adds that "An Anti-Mission Baptist church is on Big Indian creek; it is called Mt. Tabor. . . " He notes that it was organized about 100 years ago which would have been 1780-1790. Best regards, Jane

    2. Maria, I am not sure the kind of info you want, but here is something. Mr Walter Hanson died April 2, 1935 in Monongalia. He was buried according to death certificate in County Cemetery. Here is the part I thought might help. Jenkins and Braun or Brown funeral home took care of arrangements. Hope this helps Ray Oh Death register showed nothing helpful.

    3. Trying to collect information on the 11 burials recorded in 1937: Cemetery is sometimes called "Old Zoar". (This is NOT Mt Tabor cemetery in Clay Battelle District). Also interested in connecting with descendants of these people. Amelia Mason d. 1844 wife of Jesse Barb John Dent d. 1840 and wife Margaret Evans d. 1851 Amelia (Yost?) d. @1861 wife James Barker d. 1832 Annarah Barker (dau Amelia and James) d. 1855 1st wife of Jarrett Lynch Evan Stewart d. 1844 and wife, Jane Arnett d. 1838 Benjamin Wilson d. bef 1834 and wife Elenor -------- d. bef 1834 ( This is NOT Col. Benjamin Wilson who served in the French & Indian war) O.H. 1804, hand carved fieldstone. No idea who this might be. Any ideas welcomed. I am working on getting a marker for the cemetery because James Dent was a Rev war soldier and Benjamin Wilson was a Rev war patriot. 1. [WVMONONG] Monongalia County Pauper Cemetery and Poor House information
    2. Maria Brower
    3. I have been trying to find out if there were poor house records for Preston and Monongalia. My 2nd GG William George WHITE died in 1900 but there is no official county death record. I went to the courthouse myself and he is not listed. I know where he is buried. He had been living with one of his children when the family was enumerated for the official census "day" but was already deceased when the census taker came around. Prior to that time he was declared not mentally sound by the court. When his wife died, Susannah White, a few years later there was a death record and an obituary in the newspaper. William was a Civil War Veteran. Maria Brower >am currently researching and compiling historical and genealogical >information regarding the Monongalia County Potter's Field Cemetery on West >Run. 2. WV Genealogy
    3. I am currently researching and compiling historical and genealogical information regarding the Monongalia County Potter's Field Cemetery on West Run. I've found situations where this cemetery was also called "county cemetery, pauper cemetery, county home cemetery, etc." I have been collecting and compiling data on this cemetery for a few years and I plan to share the information to help other researchers. The problem that I am having is locating valid historical data in regards to the cemetery and facts related to the location. I have noticed that the cemetery is listed as many different names on vital records and other data. I would like to be as accurate and thorough as possible when publishing my data. I have reviewed many documents, historical books, genealogy records, vital records regarding Monongalia County and it appears that this cemetery has had several different names. I want to be sure that this is accurate and that there aren't, in fact, several other pauper cemeteries/indigent burial grounds in Monongalia County. If there are, if anyone has information on these locations, could you please send me the information? I appreciate any assistance or advice you may have on the subject. I would love to speak with anyone who is willing to provide insight or information on Monongalia County Pauper/Indigent burials history and/or local poor farms and county infirmaries. There are many burials recorded in vital records for the pauper cemetery on West Run but the recorders are not consistent on the name that they used to document the burial site. I can provide a few death records as examples for anyone who may need them for clarification. Some vital records list "Co. Home Cemetery" and others list, "county infirmary," and "Morgantown" (which I have been told is also referring to West Run/Potter's Field if another cemetery isn't listed)." I am particularly interested in any information regarding the following topics: Monongalia County pauper cemeteries, county infirmary, poor house, etc. I appreciate any and all reading suggestions, informational, historical links, or ideas that you may have. I would really like to compile a historically accurate resource for future generations. Thanks so much for your time. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Cindie

    1. [WVMONONG] early Rubles in Preston and Monongalia
    2. Jane McCann Walsh via
    3. Hi, Folks, I am a Ruble descendant. A fourth great grandfather was Samuel Ruble who settled on land which later had the Mason-Dixon line drawn through it, and the creek which snaked through his property was named Rubles Run. For many years I have wondered who the early Ruble men were who were mentioned in the story in S. Wiley's "History of Preston" about the massacre of John Green(e) and the breakup of his family. That story was originally told by Hon. Wm G. Brown and it appears on pp. 223-226. The story was shortened by Oren Morton in his "History of Preston" on pp. 354-355, so I'll quote that here, capitalizing the surnames: "The GREENS are of peculiar interest because of the tragic breaking up of their home by the Indians. In 1783 John Green patented 400 acres on the stream which took his name, but which was first called Buffalo Run. His cabin stood on what was afterward the Samuel R. TROWBRIDGE farm. It was near the top of the bluff on the right bank of the run. The Indian Surprise is elsewhere mentioned. The family of GREEN, so far as known, included three partially grown daughters and an infant child. The latter was murdered. Sarah the youngest of the girls, married Joseph FRIEND. Another girl married a trader to the Indians named SAUERHAVER. She did not return to Preston to live. Elizabeth, the third daughter, had married a trader named KING, but as he did not wish to leave the natives he sold his helpmate to Andrew JOHNSON, who is hereinafter mentioned. The widow of GREEN married a MOORE and had by him two daughters, Hannah and Cissia. The former married a RUBLE, and the latter married Jonathan TROWBRIDGE. There was also a son, Edmisson, elsewhere mentioned. After the death of MOORE, the widow married a SPURGEON and had a daughter named Lydia, who married a RUBLE and lived in Monongalia, as did also Hannah. Mrs. Spuregon was buried by her three husbands. She was one of the Methodist class that worshiped in the old church between her home and Kingwood." In 2015, a man by the name of Hamilton had his Ydna tested and it matched that of a Ruble cousin of mine, as well as other Rubles in a Ruple/Ruble Study. This fellow's Hamilton tree includes a Hamilton born in WV in 1802. Another Hamilton tree has this same Hamilton born in Preston county in 1802. That fact prompted me to review the readily available, extant records for early Monongalia. Earlier, I had noticed that there was a Jacob Rubel on the 1788 tax list and the 1800 tax list of eastern Monongalia and I casually assumed that was my Jacob, son of Samuel. However, when I really looked at this, I realized that my Jacob would only have been 12 years old in 1787 the year for which the 1788 tax assessment would have been made, so obviously not my Jacob. My Samuel died in 1799 and in 1800 Jacob and his Mother, the widow Mary Ruble, sold a tract which Samuel had owned in what later became Preston; that tract was on Three Fork Creek. So, I had presumed that Jacob had lived on that tract prior to its sale. However, a land sale which occurred in 1808 listed a Jacob Ruble as an adjoiner to a tract on Laurel Run. Those two streams are in different areas of Preston county. I just had not thought about those details earlier. It appears that the Jacob Ruble who appears on the 1800 Tax list, owning five horses, had died or left the area some time in 1801. I also found a Jacob "Rubble" serving in 1781-1782 as a Frontier Ranger in Washington county, PA which is where Samuel Ruble's brother David lived and David also served as a Frontier Ranger. Others have thought that Jacob Rubble was a son of David, but David's son Jacob was not born until 1773, so he was too young. I suspect now that this Jacob Rubel/Rubble/Ruble was another brother of David and Samuel. Others have a brother named Jacob listed as born in 1745. My current theory is that he was married in Frederick, VA and had sons named John, George and Thomas, and then his wife died. Perhaps that caused Jacob to migrate over the mountains to the area where two of his older brothers lived in SW PA. There has been a mysterious John Ruble left in Frederick, VA whose will was probated there in 1836. I think he was likely the first born son of Jacob, perhaps raised by his maternal grandparents. On the 1814 tax list of the Eastern Dist. of Monongalia, there is a Thomas Ruble and a George Ruble listed next to one another and not listed next to "my" Jacob. I suspect that these were two sons of Jacob b. 1745, perhaps living on the land which this senior Jacob had owned. George appears as early as 1811 in a Monongalia record and noted as insolvent. And, George is on the 1812 tax list on Monongalia. Now back to the story concerning the widow Green(e). I suspect that the daughter named Hannah Moore married George Ruble who likely died about 1815. And, I suspect that the daughter named Lydia Spurgeon married Thomas Ruble who likely died about 1820. A few years ago, I found a Rev. Thomas B. Ruble b. 1811 who married in Missouri in 1838 and by 1843 was a missionary to Indians in Oklahoma. This Thomas B. Ruble appears to have been a missionary for more than 20 years and finally was assigned to Harrell Chapel in Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, and later was assigned to a church in Boonsboro (now Cane Hill), Washington, AR. His 1876 obit. reports that Thomas was born in "Morganton" WV. I suspect that Rev. Thomas was a son of Thomas Ruble and Lydia Spurgeon, and that he may have been born in the part of Monongalia which later became Preston. And, my speculation is that Jacob Ruble died about 1801 and that his wife remarried to Robert Hamilton, but was already pregnant with a son of Jacob's. Her other Ruble children would all have been under age so likely remained in the Hamilton household and became known as Hamiltons. And, that would be why a Hamilton's Ydna would match that of Rubles. Would love to hear from anyone researching any of the folks mentioned in this email. And, anyone's thoughts on my speculations would be appreciated. Best regards, Jane jmwalsh@hughes.net

    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the HOGUE or HOGE Family of West Virginia. The first is a photograph of Lou, Grace, and Jessie HOGUE which was taken at the C. S. Rogers Studio in Morgantown, WV. This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the three girls likely 3-8 years old at the time. It appears that Grace is the youngest of the three and Lou and Jessie are close in age. The second photograph is one of Jess & Grace HOGUE or HOGE which was taken at the Shafer Studio in Fairmont, WV. This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with the two in their teens or 20's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family: Grace F. HOGUE married Zebbie George ROGERS in 1900 in Monongalia Co. WV. Jessie E. 1. [WVMONONG] Watts, Frederick Co., MD to Monongalia Co.
    2. BobFoster via
    3. Does anyone on this list connect with the John Watts, son of Richard and Susanna (Northcraft) Watts of Frederick Co., MD, who moved to Monongalia county in the late 1700s? He died 1795 in Monongalia county. His wife was named Elizabeth, but I haven’t been able to learn her maiden name yet. I know John and Elizabeth had at least five underage children at the time of his death – John, Anna, Richard, Harmon, and Susanna. By the approx. birth year of his son John (about 1780) I calculate that John, Sr. might have been born between 1750-1760. After his death his widow Elizabeth remarried twice. First to Andrew Glendenning and then to Thomas Wolverton. She died 1836 in Monongalia. My burning questions: Did John and Elizabeth have other children who may have been grown by the time of John’s death in 1795? Is this John Watts the same one who was in Hampshire Co., VA in 1782? For the record, the elder Richard Watts’ (of Frederick Co., MD) parents were Francis Watts and Margaret Purdy of Anne Arundel Co., MD. Richard died testate before 1774. His will only listed three heirs : Elizabeth, Margaret and John. Since he married in 1731 I find it difficult to believe that he only had three children. Perhaps he didn’t include some for a reason or perhaps they all died before 1774. Francis’ parents in turn were Francis Watts and Sarah Beall. This Francis was probably born about 1640 and may have been the immigrant. I’ve seen on Find A Grave that someone has put up a memorial to Francis Watts and claims he was actually from Virginia and was the son of Edward Watts. I’ve seen no evidence for this. Besides, the dates don’t seem to work for the Virginia Francis Watts. But, I suppose it’s within the realm of possibility. Many Catholics and Quakers fled from Virginia to Maryland because of religious intolerance in the 1600s. But, as I said, I haven’t seen anything in the records to warrant such a connection.
