    3. Hi all, Since Martin Co. is a neighboring county I wanted to pass this invitation along to this list. Below I have copied and pasted my originial letter that I sent to Martin Co. If anyone is interested please let me know, by writing me at: [email protected] Hi all, Some of you may know who I am and some of you may not. I have in the past year been involved with the Mingo Co.,Va (WV) List in getting the census for that county scanned and put on CD. I have now completed that Project with Mingo Co. We have no more years to do. My next goal is to attempt to do the same with Martin Co. KY. Especially since Martin Co information is so hard to obtain it seems, this will help out greatly in our research. For those of you who may have never heard of this I will go into as much detail as I can. There is a company called S&K Publications located here on the internet. For a price they will send for the microfilm of a county. Once they receive this microfilm they scan each page and put all the pages of the original hand written census on a CD. They also contribute a copy to be placed online at Roots Web for anyone to be able to access. Because of limited space at Roots Web the images from the roots web server are poor in comparison to the quality of the ones on the actual CD. So there is a great advantage in having the actual CD. I am interested in getting all years of Martin Co. scanned. That would be the following years, 1920,1910,1900,and 1880. There is no 1890 Census as that was burnt in a fire. 1880 would have been the first one. Below I have copied and pasted the cost of each year that S&K is charging. 1880 - 80 pages (4 persons at $20 each) 1900 - 120 pages (6 persons at $20 each) 1910 - 160 pages (8 persons at $20 each) 1920 - 160 pages (8 persons at $20 each) Martin Co. is a small county therefore it will not take that many of us to obtain this goal (in Mingo Co. I had to have a min. of 20 contributors). Once these CD's are created they are available for sale for the same price of $20 as each of us would be paying for them now. The only advantage in doing this now instead of later is that we need a min. amount of people in order to get it processed. http://www.skpub.com/genie/ This is the web site for S&K. Feel free to check it out or to write to the owner with any questions you might have. I will be contributing to each of these years, therefore we only need 3 people for 1880, 5 people for 1900, and 7 people for 1910 and 1920. Anyone who is interested please let me know. If enough are I will start getting it organized. The way the money works is: Everyone sends me their $20. I pay for the entire census on my visa card. I do not accept personal checks. Money Orders or cash only, however I do not recommend sending cash through the mail! I look forward to hearing from everyone, Sherry [email protected]
