Hello Barb, Your query on the Mounce-L list today caught my attention as I have long wondered whether or not there was a connection between the Mounce/Mounts family of Wayne & Pulaski County, KY and my David Mounts/Mountz who settled along the Tug River a little after 1800. Do you have any idea of how long Slone/Sloan Mounts/Mounce was in the Logan Co., WV area? I am forwarding this reply to you to the Logan & Mingo lists to see if any researchers there have heard of him, the shoot-out with a sheriff over moonshine, and his date of death. Have you asked folks on the Pulaski & Wayne Co., KY lists? Do you have an approximate date of death? Know where death occurred?? Records on my David appear briefly in Floyd County, KY then in Cabell & Logan County, Virginia. All these locations are along the Tug and he lived in present day Mingo County, WV close to the Tug River which forms a boarder with KY. My David of Logan County and a John Mounce/Mounts in the area of Wayne County are the earliest Mounts I have found so far in the land grants. I have picked up the Christian name David in a later Mounts family from Wayne. Of course, there came to be various David's up along the Tug as David Mounts b. 1785- d. 1852 was the progenitor of the Mounts family in the Tug area. Do you know if Sloan/Slone Mounce/Mounts was in Logan for work only or if he had relations in Logan, WV? I have found a few things which may help you: The name Slone, which shows up Sloan: A William Mounce married Polly Sloan 20 July 1820 in Wayne County, KY. Perhaps your Sloan Mounce is descended from this line??????? Pulaski used to be part of Wayne.......... 1920 census Logan, Logan County, WV SLOAN MOUNTS is shown as a boarder in the home of GROVER BRACKMAN. He is listed as a white male, age 40, divorced, and a coal miner. Other MOUNTS heads of households listed in Logan City, Logan WV in 1920 include Alek, Carl, Gus, Kenis F., & Mollie. There are, of course, many more Mounts in Logan & Mingo Counties in 1920. In an index to the 1910 census I find SLOAN MOUNCE, age 31, living in Burnside, Pulaski County, KY. White male. estim b. 1878. In 1910 other heads of households living in Burnside are John Mounce, b. 1884 and Mike Mounce, b. 1852. There are a great deal of Mounce individuals in Pulaski Co. in 1910. From what you posted, I assume that the Mike Mounce, b. 1852, is the father of Sloan Mounce. Do you know the parents of Mike Mounce b. 1852? In the 1910 KY Miracode Index I find Sloan Mounce, b. KY, residing Burnside, Pulaski County, wife Lizzie E., 23, b. KY, son Mat L. [Matt?], N. R., b. KY. In the 1900 Census I find SLOAN MOUNCE listed in the Ohio State Penitentiary, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He is age 20, estimated birth year is 1880, b. KY, white, prisoner. This was in Precinct C and enumerated on 9 June 1900, line 93. Birthdate is given as May, 1880. Age 20. Divorced. He & both parents born KY. Can read, write, and speaks English. 1900 Federal Census, Ohio State Penitentiary, Franklin, Ohio; Roll T623 1269; Page 8B; Enumeration District: 111. A daughter of Sloan Mounce & Emma White [one of his 4 wives] , your grandmother SNOWA? : A Snowa M. Logan, born 13 February 1904, died 8 December 1985 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH. In the 1930 [enum. 3 April 1930 Cincinnati City] census Snowa Logan is living [renters] in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, age 26, with husband Jeff Logan, 34, and sons: Carl, 7; Harry, 6; Junior, 4 9/12; and Irvin, 3 8/12. Jeff was born in Georgia. All the children were born in Ohio. Jeff's parents were also born in Georgia and Snowa's parents were both born in Kentucky. Jeff was a laborer on the railroad. Social Security Death Index has Snowa Logan b. 13 Feb. 1904 died Dec. 1985 SS# as 406-64-5626. The number was issued in KY (1963). Last residence: Vanceburg, Lewis County, KY. You can also request a copy of her social security application. I don't know why the social security numbers don't match---looks like the same person to me. Could one be Jeff's number??? I just don't know.... I couldn't find Snowa in 1910 & 1920--probably not looking under the correct name or spelling. Hope someone else knows something! Good Luck! Brenda
