I grew up hearing about the Matewan Massacre, Sid Hatfield, etc., like so many others, but my most recent and FUN discovery for me (since I am a FERRELL from the Mingo County Ferrells) is a piece of information I picked up from HERITAGE OF MINGO, THE NEWSLETTER OF THE MINGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, P. O. Box 2581, Williamson, WVA, 25661 in their latest issue, Volume 15, Number 2, Fall/Winter 1999, p. 7., transcriptions of deeds by Tom Atkins: PAGE 284 "May 27, 1893. F. A. J. Ferrell and Mary his wife to Henry Varney for $150.00, lot number 10 in the town of Ferrelton near the mouth of Mate Creek, as laid down on the map of said town. The lot adjoins a lot owned by Lewis Ruthrford on the east, M. T. Davis on the west, 60 feet fronting on Mate Street and back 100 feet to McCoy Alley. Said town of Ferrelton is now called Matewan."
