    1. If you you have a family tree posted on ancestry
    2. Heads up, everyone. I received this in my box this morning and thought it worth passing along. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV From another list -- something you might want to know. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 11:25 AM Subject: Ancestry.com to sell Family Tree data If you have submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com, you might want to know of the change about to be implemented by them. The Family Trees that have been donated to Ancestry for free distribution to other researchers are about to be sold by subscription: the OneWorldTree Preview cost will be $49.95 for 14 months. If you'd prefer that your information was not sold, there is a link below which will take you to a set of instructions on opting out by deleting your tree. After clicking on the link and arriving at the page, click on "What's a preview?" near the top of the page. Read thoroughly and then click on "View our checklist" (which appears on #3). Among other things, you will see the following sentence: "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004." This is the link: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/

    1. Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Road Conditions
    2. I have been reading the posting that have been posted about the road conditions here in WV. I usually don't try to say to much but I would like to state my opinion. I moved back here to Mingo County about a year ago, I live at Varney and since I have been here I thought the same thing Robert thinks, it's a shame how things have changed to the worse since our childhood, but I also have witnessed the highways being cleaned from one end to the other in our community only to be trashed again within 2 weeks. Not only are they littered, the ditches are in terrible shape and heaven forbid if you run off the road in some areas, as well as the patches on some of the roads, you have to cross to the other lane in some areas because they are so rough, if you have the opportunity. So all of this can't be blamed on the people in the community, the state should take the blame for the conditions of the road. It's obivious to me we have more people who don't care than the few who do and the few who do can easily get discouraged. The jobs are scarce here and so many people are unemployed. Maybe that accounts for alot of the I don't care attitude so many have.

    3. I Know Anita, it is none of my business the way they keep their roadways, but I love the state I was born in. In my teens I had so much fun there. It really bothers me that people would let this kind of thing happen to their community. 3. Anita, I completely agree, but it seems no one who lives there cares how it looks. It is so sad. There is nothing I can do since I live in northern Ohio. 3. I would like to say in defense of my home state of West Virginia, that the picture you paint is not the norm. It truly is up to a community to care enough to keep it beautiful. The area I came from is still as pristine as ever. -----Original Message----- From: Wilma Wireman [mailto:wwireman@earthlink.net] Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2004 10:05 PM To: WVMINGO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Do you live in West Virginia? 1. Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Do you live in West Virginia?
    2. Anita....I like that idea about the farmer's cutting the grass. Its a good trade off. Here in Georgia we don't see actual chain gangs anymore but we do see alot of prisoners earning 2 for 1 time off by volunteering to work at various jobs requiring manual labor. We still have armed guards with shot guns and high powered rifles to keep them from wandering off, along with a automatic 5 year escape sentence if they are so inclined to try to run. I hope to be in Mingo, Cabell, Lincoln and a few other counties in early June doing some research. Its always good to get back to the hills I may even dig up some sassafrass roots to bring back. 1. Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Do you live in West Virginia?
    2. Terry, I grew up in Tennessee. They used to use "chain gangs" to keep the roads clean. I can remember driving by and seeing the men on the horses with the rifles, sort of scary. However now, instead of using the state road department to mow the medians as they do here in WV, they hire the farmers with the big tractors to do it. It gives me something to do while they are waiting for their tobacco and soybean crops and also puts an extra dollar or two in their pockets. It saves the state money because they don't have to buy the equipment on top of paying someone to do the work. Here in Fayette County, they use the prisoners to take care of the county property, such as mowing the lawn and trimming at the court house and the memorial building. Anita

    1. Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Do you live in West Virginia?
    2. My father lived at Kermit (Grey Eagle) and I was raised at Warfield, Ky and have lived in Georgia the past 45 years. Some organizations adopt certain sections of the highways around here but the chief contributor is the sheriff's department using prisoners and people having to do community service as a result of a court action. This is very common here in Georgia. Terry P

    1. Re: [WVMINGO] Poll: Do you live in West Virginia?
    2. Wilma, Groups and/or organizations can pledge to keep a section of roadway clean. All they have to do is to contact the Division of Highways and say that they would like to "adopt" whatever amount of roadway and keep it clean. It is called the Adopt a Highway project and there will be a sign erected stating who or what organization has adopted that area. Apparently, that area has not had a group to adopt it. However, here in Fayette County, there are adopt a highway signs everywhere. Some are church groups, boy scouts, Ladies Garden Club, etc. So, it is up to the people of the area. If they want to have it clean and neat, then someone needs to adopt it. Anita
