Hi, Mingo was part of Logan County until 1895 so to view the 1880 census for Mingo, you'd need to look at the 1880 census for Logan County at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvlogan/logan.htm Good Luck, Barbara
A while back a message was posted about Hart Slater and Williamson West Virginia 1926. I do not remember all of the message. If the person that posted it sees this and wants to contact me I can direct him to some information that may or may not hel him. Bobby [email protected]
Thanks for the information, Larry. My Steele- Mounts(Mountz) connection occured in Mingo when the d/o David Cecil Mounts, Martha "Patsy", b. abt. 1825-1830 married John Steele,b. abt. 1825. Patsy's parents were married in 1809 in Montgomery County, but I have been unable to find the parents of David Mounts, or the Steele family that John descended from before they got to Logan(Mingo). That's why the close proximity of the names caught my eye in this 1810 Ohio County census. My Ferrells, however, came from Russell County, I believe. Thanks for your help. I want to thank everyone who replied to my question. Regards, Brenda
Has anyone seen this census or know where Ohio County was and if it included Mingo and/or close areas? I checked out the index at usgenweb archives and it contains some interesting names, such as: Mountz 1049 Steele 1049 Feril 1067 Feroll 1079 Ferrell 1050 Ferroll 1050-1069 S-K Publishers has done a book, I believe. Thanks, Brenda
Brenda, The Handybook for Genealogists, Everton Publishers, Inc., states that Ohio County was formed 1776 out of the District of Augusta. It gives 205 City County Bldg., Wheeling, WV, 26003 for an address. Phone (304) 234-3656 (check area code as many have changed since I purchased the book). Also says Co Clk has birth & death records from 1853, marriage from 1793, probate from 1777, land from 1778. Clerk of Circuit Court has divorce, civil records from 1884.

Lula's ancestral homeland is Tazewell Co., Va., and she has spent many years researching her and allied families in the New River Valley, including Montgomery Co., Va. She has deciphered many new names, dates, and events, as well as military, trade and travel entries from a new photocopy of the diary. Archibald wrote "Farewell to Sweet Ireland Wherein I Was Bred." Freda, My dad was born in Mingo county and was told he could not get a birth certificate because they were destroyed in the fires and floods. One day my mom wrote to the capital in Charleston and they sent her a copy of his birth certificate! The Archives in Charleston is really a GREAT place to do research. They have census records, marriage records, birth records, newspapers, etc for most of the counties in the state (I found my grandparents marriage certificate on microfilm there... Mingo county 1913). The Archives and History Library is opened Monday-Friday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. They close for state holidays and were doing some remodeling last fall (hopefully that is finished now). Their phone number is 304-558-0230. If you go there take plenty of change for the parking meter (I ususally try to park in the lot right next to the center but it can fill up fast). Below is some information taken from their brochure (pick one up if you visit - it's GREAT). Good Luck! Debbie Ullom ------ Directions: (taken from one of their brochures - "The West Virginia State Archives is located in the Cultural Center which is part of the State Capitol Complex. From Interstate 64/77, take Exit 99 (State-Capitol/Greenbrier Street). There is limited, metered parking at the Capitol Complex. Additional visitor parking is available at Laidley Field on Elizabeth Street with shuttle service to the Capitol." Also another resource is the WV Archive Library located in the Cultural Center within the Capital complex in Charleston, WV. It has listings per county but also for the entire state -- such as deaths, marriages, births and delayed birth certificates. It is open M-F 9a-5p, and Saturday from 1-5p. The employees who work there are very helpful. They have references such as books, journals, and a large amount of microfilm -- the Mingo microfilm does show lots of water damage from the repeat flooding but you could again check with the state listings for death certificates and it lists the name, county, death certificate number and a numerical listing for the cause of death. Beulah, So sorry if I haven't gotten back with you. Been real busy with medical problems. Will try to answer some of your question. I have Parlina as the sister of Sarah Stafford who would be my gggrandmother, Sarah was married to Andrew Varney. Their son Alvis who married Frankie Sansom, Nicholas their son married Sarah Christian the only grandmother I was blessed to know, and what a great lady she was. Now I do have Elizabeth Davidsons parents but I want to find my information where I got it from. When I first started this two years ago I didn't see any reason to go thru the trouble of coping down everywhere I got every thing, boys was I wrong. Believe me I do now. But I think its from a book of something like VA. pioneers. It wasn't called that but basically that what it was about. Will get back with you on this.Again I'm sorry for not answering sooner.
