For those who have ancestors who were in Fincastle > Washington County, VA, Rhonda Robertson has done a great service by transcribing WASHINGTON COUNTY SURVEYORS RECORD , 1781-1797 for the 'net. Lots of family names of interest.... I found this FERRELL record: "page 68- Thomas Ferral, heir 142 ac. Commissioners Certificate... on both sides of a small branch, waters of Thompsons Creek, branch of Clinch River... beginning by a path... March 21, 1783 - Thomas Ferral, heir to William Ferral, dec'd, assignee of Richard Thompson, assignee of Jacob Jackson... 300 ac... on the northside of Clinch River in the New Garden, includes improvements, actual settlement made in 1772...August 24, 1781." This may not be the correct forum for this question but I don't know who else to ask. So here goes. How does kinship work? Here is an example: My sister is listed as Aunt (to my daughter) and also as 6th cousin once removed. What does the 6th cousin once removed mean? And how is it figured? For my x-wife's sister it just says Aunt. For me it lists Father and 6th cousin once removed.... So my question is What gives? I didn't know I was my daughter's cousin or was this software written by one of our cousin 9th removed? Confused Phil Montgomery
Hello! I am looking for information on John Marian PAYNE, b. abt 1885, married to Mary Ann VANCE, b. May 1885. They were from Mingo/Logan Counties, West Virginia. Children included the following: Sarah J. b. 1910 Gilbert L. b. 3-1-12 Theordore b. 1914 Leander b. 1917 I have found Mary and her children in the 1920 Mingo Co. census, living with her father, Jackson VANCE, so I am assuming he (John PAYNE) died prior to that. Gilbert L. PAYNE was married to a woman named Wilsonia. I have no other information on her at this time, although I am awaiting her SS card application copy from Baltimore. They had a son, Lanville, who was killed in an explosion in Logan Co., WV in 1988. Do any of these PAYNE family members ring with anyone? I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.
