    3. William Frederick Welch was the grandson of the Rev. William Welch, circuit riding preacher of the present Mineral County, West area, south of Keyser, WV. The Rev. Welch was said to have performed some 1500 marriages in the area. 1850 Federal census, Virginia, Hampshire County, Division 24, Page 256B ("John Welch", HH) "William", WM age 17 (1833). .............. William Frederick Welch's father, John Welch, had died before the 1860 census was taken. His wife, Sarah Jane (Duling); was head of household in 1860. Included in her household was her daughter Lucretia J. Welch, wife of Dennis Duling. Immediately following Dennis Duling, the census taker recorded William F. and Hester A. Welch, but mistakenly added ditto marks under Duling, designating them as "DULING", rather than Welch. So they will _never turn up in the 1860 census under the surname "WELCH". -SJB 10/2004 1860 Federal census, Virginia, Hampshire County, (now West Virginia, Mineral County), Western District, Ridgeville Post Office, Ancestry.com Image 211 of 326, Page 219 or 207 taken Sept. 22, 1860. No meaningful Dwelling or Family numbers. Born in Virginia unless shown otherwise. Dwelling 4, Family 4 "William F." (Ditto marks under "Duling" indicates the head of this household is William F. "Duling". "William F. Duling is actually William F. WELCH and wife Hester Ann JUNKINS. "William F." (Duling, should be "WELCH", HH) "Hester A.", WF age 22 (1838). "Mary F.", WF age 3 (1857), born in Iowa. "Virginia A.", WF age 1 (1849), born in Iowa. * SARAH WELCH, age 50 counted just before; Peter Wilson counted immed- iately after. .............. Welch is the same William Welch (married to Hester Ann Junkins) named in Mary Ellen "Nellie" Harvey's recollections of her visit to her grandfather, Benjamin Junkins home in Virginia during the Civil War, when she recalled Hester (Junkins) Welch's husband, William Welch's; narrow escape- "Her husband, a Northern soldier, had a very wholesome fear of the Rebels, and took great pains to keep out of sight when any of them appeared during a furlough. At one time a band of them dashed up and as usual began to reconnoitre. One of them went to the door of the appartment occupied by the Welshes. They opened the door and looked in. Mr. Welsh sat in front of the fireplace, but he did not turn around so they went back. They asked Grandmother who that man was and she said it was probably one of the neighbor boys, as the young people often visit Mrs. Welch. The soldiers were not satisfied, however and went back, but Mr. Welch had made his escape." ............ 1870 Federal census, West Virginia, Mineral County, Elk District, New Creek Post Office taken Aug. 4, 1870 Page 596 or Page 1 for Elk District, Ancestry.com Image 1 for Elk District; Dwelling 2, Family 2.
