Sam: I am working through the death information on all of the Welches, looking at death certificates where I can. There are often little tidbits there. It will be interesting if William F. Welch was a Union soldier. He will be the first in my family I have ever found, and I have been doing research into both my maternal and paternal lines for 20 years! There seems to be some of the Junkins/Welches who wandered off to Iowa for a while. Two of William's children were born there, but the last son, David O. [probably Oliver] was born in Mineral Co. in 1878 so they were definitely back by then. I'll keep sharing tidbits as I turn them up. Welch I can find nothing in my file that shows anything other than "William F." Welch. I have no idea how I have his middle name as Frederick I've changed it to William Ferdinand Welch. I cannot find William and Hester anyplace after 1880, and only a couple of their children. I've tried everything I can think of. Something seems strange to me. William F. Welch's brother, John D. Welch, 1890- 1890 "Special Schedule for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines and Widows, Etc.", Page 4, West Virginia, S. D. 1, E. D. 33, West Virginia, New Creek area House # 574 Family # 579 "Mary E." (or C.), widow of "Welch, John D.", Corporal, Company "I", 10th regiment, West Virginia Infantry, Enlisted 19 May, 1862, Date of Discharge not given, Length of Service 3 Years, # of Months and Days not given. Post Office Address New Creek District, Ridgeville, WV Post Office, "Wounded & Lost Right Eye", Battle of Moorefield, VA. * Same page, Benjamin (F.) Tasker, Private, Company I., 10th Regiment. ............. William F. Welch is not found anywhere that year, and neither he nor wife Hester are to be found in the 1900 census. I've checked all pages in Mineral County and everywhere else, I think in 1890. Neither William F. Welch nor widow Hester are to be found anyplace in 1890. If either were still living in Mineral County in 1890 and he were a Union Soldier one or both (only he if still living) should have been counted. Note that the 1890 Special census was only to include _Union Veterans. Some Con- federates are listed with no information, but their names are usually crossed out. Nellie Harvey's narration of her experiences of the Civil War states that William "had a very wholesome fear of the Rebels"; indicating he was a Union soldier. I suppose he would have had had double fear if he had deserted the Confederate army and joined with North. On the one hand it seems inconceivable that he would have joined the rebel army when his brother and apparently his friends had joined the Union army. On the other hand, both he and Hester may have been dead by 1890. I'm not certain there's not more to the story, though. Sam Jane Mitakides wrote: >Sam: > >Thank you for all of the great information.
