Sam: Thank you for all of the great information. Regarding William F. Welch, son of John and father of LuElla (or Ella) and Charles E.: On my grandmother's death certificate and that of her brother (Uncle Charlie Welch) Their father is listed as Ferdinand Welch. On both of the marriage records, he is William F. Welch. In both instances, the mother is Hester A. Was he William Frederick or William Ferdinand? Obviously, this is the same person, with the same wife and children! I've never seen the Ferdinand until recently. It should have been 1859. "Alice" from the Nellie Harvey story was Virginia A. age 1 in 1860 and "Alice V." age 11 in 1870. She married Neri Clark sometime after June 22, 1880, when she and her older sister Mary F. were counted as "nieces" (should have been granddaughters) in their grandfather Rev. William Junkins household. From Earlene Babcock's work on the Junkins- "A newspaper article that contains some interesting information on the Junkins family" (an interview with a gentleman by the name of Taylor Arnold) "The little girl you spoke of as named Alice; I think the name was Welsh instead of Evans. Her mother was a daughter of Uncle Billy Junkins and she lived with him quite a bit. She is the wife of N. Clark and is living yet. If I have made any mistakes I hope somebody will correct me." Earlene then asks the question- "(Could this little girl, Alice Welch, be the daughter of the Mrs. Welch that lived with Benjamin Junkins during the Civil war as written by his granddaughter Nellie? Benjamin and John W., the father of William M. Junkins, were brothers.)" -Earlene Babcock Indeed, it appears certain she was. -SJB 02/2004 ........... Hi Jane: I'll have to get back to you later with you on William Welch. "William F." is all I see at present. Don't know at the moment where I came up with Frederick. So it could have been either. I can find nothing in my file that shows anything other than "William F." Welch. I have no idea how I have his middle name as Frederick I've changed it to William Ferdinand Welch. I cannot find William and Hester anyplace after 1880, and only a couple of their children. I've tried everything I can think of. Something seems strange to me. William F. Welch's brother, John D. Welch, 1890- 1890 "Special Schedule for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines and Widows, Etc.", Page 4, West Virginia, S. D. 1, E. D. 33, West Virginia, New Creek area House # 574 Family # 579 "Mary E." (or C.), widow of "Welch, John D.", Corporal, Company "I", 10th regiment, West Virginia Infantry, Enlisted 19 May, 1862, Date of Discharge not given, Length of Service 3 Years, # of Months and Days not given. Post Office Address New Creek District, Ridgeville, WV Post Office, "Wounded & Lost Right Eye", Battle of Moorefield, VA. * Same page, Benjamin (F.) Tasker, Private, Company I., 10th Regiment. ............. William F. Welch is not found anywhere that year, and neither he nor wife Hester are to be found in the 1900 census. I've checked all pages in Mineral County and everywhere else, I think in 1890. Neither William F. Welch nor widow Hester are to be found anyplace in 1890. If either were still living in Mineral County in 1890 and he were a Union Soldier one or both (only he if still living) should have been counted. Note that the 1890 Special census was only to include _Union Veterans. Some Con- federates are listed with no information, but their names are usually crossed out. Nellie Harvey's narration of her experiences of the Civil War states that William "had a very wholesome fear of the Rebels"; indicating he was a Union soldier. I suppose he would have had had double fear if he had deserted the Confederate army and joined with North. On the one hand it seems inconceivable that he would have joined the rebel army when his brother and apparently his friends had joined the Union army. On the other hand, both he and Hester may have been dead by 1890. I'm not certain there's not more to the story, though. Sam Jane Mitakides wrote: >Sam: > >Thank you for all of the great information.
