To all those people that I have drove crazy wanting to know "Where was South Branch" being German/Irish stubborn I FOUND South Branch. In 1884 they had a Depot: A small station on the B & O RR, in Hampshire Cunty, 20 miles north from Romeny ch, and 120 miles from Wheeling. Ex. B & O. Mail daily. W N Guthrie, postmaster. I feel so much better that the info in my ggrandfather's civil war papers have been an accurate clue. Thanks to all who had to put up with me and this question.
