This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Reed Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xEC.2ACI/769 Message Board Post: For those who have unfortunately run into a genealogical "brick wall" concerning your Reed/Reid/Read/Reade/Riedt ancestor, science and technology has recently provided us with a very exciting and potent tool to aid us in our long-standing quest for identifying our ancestral heritage. To this end, the Reed Y-chromosome DNA Project was launched last year and is now up to twenty participants and counting. So if you, or a male relative of yours (father, husband, brother, cousin, etc.) have the surname of Reed (or any variant spelling), and descend from any of the Reed/Reid/Read/Reade/Riedt families of early Mineral Co., WV, then it might be something you’d want to take a look at. Results thus far in the ongoing project are posted at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/reed/. As a sidenote, for any potential participants who may be the least bit concerned about privacy-related issues, these are fully addressed within the links associated with the above web site. And since this international study only deals with a very tiny, and specific, segment of the entire DNA sequence, it can only be used to aid in scientifically confirming the degree of relatedness between the many Reed/Reid/Read, etc. study participants - merely to help us determine which participant we share a common Reed/Reid/Read, etc. ancestor with (if any), and estimate how many generations back this event likely occurred. In fact, this study has already allowed me to eliminate a couple of long-standing, potential Reed ancestors off of my own list, so that I am now able to focus on the remaining potential lines that I've assimilated in my many years of research to date. And obviously, as more and more study results (and hopefully matches, or near matches) come in from worldwide participants, our search can be even further narrowed, thus bringing us closer to scientifically identifying our "true" ancestral line, as well as their country of origin, etc., if we're fortunate. So, by all means, please participate if you can and see the above link for further details. A mere twelve (12) y-DNA marker test should be quite sufficient for now. Best wishes, Bob P.S. The aforementioned web site may also be referenced for a list of all "other" DNA -surname projects (hundreds) presently underway. Check it out; it'll be worth your while.
The Umstead group is doing DNA testing, and I, for one, sure would like to know if the Umstots descend from Hans Peter Umstadt who came to Philadelphia in 1683. I think we have one Umstot to take the test, but another man would be helpful, too. I have offered to donate a bit to the cause, and wondered if anyone else might donate a small amount. I think it costs $129. or something like that. Since only men can be tested, but I though we gals could help pay for it. Smile. It is easy, just a mouth swab. Helen Benter
Four libraries have copies of the book Sesquicentennial of Frankfort (it does appear that "The History of Patterson Creek etc." is an article within this book): the Minnesota Historical Society, Fairmont State College, Marshall University, and WV University. You could try for interlibrary loan of the book or request a photocopy of that article via interlibrary loan (in either case, you apply via your own public library). Good luck! I received an obituary from the Martinsburg Public Library regarding an Effie Miller who died in 1976. Listed as the minister for the interment was her grandson Robert Nelson Taylor. I did a search for his name on Yahoo and the search led me to an obit for a Robert Nelson Taylor, Jr. who died this past January in Cumberland, MD. He was from Rio. Maybe it was a coincidence the names being the same or? Does anyone on the list recognize this Robert Nelson Taylor, Minister or possibly his son Robert Nelson Taylor, Jr.? I'm seeking information on Effie Miller's husband's first wife a Vallie V. Rockwell of Martinsburg. Perhaps this family could help me? Thanks, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

Past, I believe they are on film ast the Family History Centers of the Mormon Church. Each film costs a few dollars to order from Salt lake,. Helen I am looking for some deeds from the Mineral County Courthouse. Can someone tell me how to go about getting copies and what is the cost?
Trying to learn who the parents of John B. Baker b. Apr. 15, 1801 may have been. I haven't been able to connect him to any of the other Bakers in Hampshire County in the early 1800's. Thought perhaps someone else may have. Elizabeth Junkins, b. 1806 was my GGG Grandmother on my father's side. I haven't been able to find a census record of the John B. Baker family in 1840 that fits the profile of what this family should have looked like in 1840. It appears John B. Baker died sometime between March 7, 1843 when their last child was born and July 18, 1850, by which time Elizabeth (Junkins) Baker had apparently remarried to a John Sargent, who also is a bit of a mystery as to his whereabouts in 1840. John Sargent and Elizabeth Junkins (Baker) Junkins, along with three of John B. Baker's children; are found in the 1850-1880 census in the Philippi area of Barbour County. Thanks for any help, Sam
