Hi Bill, My data base indicates that Orvin Ray Wagoner and I are each 4th great-grandsons of John M. Waggoner who (for others reading this) is one level below your Captain Thomas Wag[g]oner. I am also a 5th great-grandson of John M. Waggoner because of the marriage of James Frederick Waggoner-Wagoner and his first cousin once removed Nancy Ellen Waggoner on Sep 01, 1859. They or the Census taker changed their last name from Wagoner to Wagner after they moved to Missouri between the 1870 Census and the birth of their son James Harris Wagner who was born Bet. William Allen PYLES-1 and Orvin Ray WAGONER-20977 are 5th cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are Captain Thomas WAGONER-1082 and Mrs. WAGGONER-1083. Orvin and I grew up together and went to the same church, was in the church choir and attended many functions together. Now how are you tied in to the Wagoners, Piles/Pyles, Adams/Stuckslager? I don't know of an surveys. There is a possibility there is some in Hampshire County or in achives. Yes, there are a lot of cross marriages. When you had Adams, Wagoners, Allens, Daniels, Dowden, Broome and at one time Johnson, they did cross marry. There was a lot of that many years ago because they met at church or a social function. They didn't leave town unless for business. Many attended church just to met their nighbors. The whole community attended a funeral because they knew the person. As for different spellings, most people couldn't read or write. The ones who could write spelled the name the way they thought, e.g. Pile/Piles/Pyle/Pyles. In fact my grandfather spelled his name with an "i" when born but later changed it to a "y". I had a cousin who dropped the "s" from the name. Dennis Daniels who layed out Frankfort (Fort Ashby) for Keller was my g-g-grandfather. My great grandfather, John Adams Daniels, Jr and John Sr., assumed the maiden name of their mother and grandfather, John Adams. There are still many Pyles, Adams and Wagoners. However many families have left the area or died off.
