Hi Patsy, I found my Broome connection. My husband's grandfather's sister md a Broome. Knew it was in there somewhere, but not my direct line. Goes like this: Susan V Davis, daughter of John C. Davis and Elizabeth Ann Davis (her maiden name too). Susan was born Sept 1876 in WV md William H. Broome. William born Oct 1870 in WV. I got that info from the internet at a Rootsweb page done by allstarts@hotmail.com It was mainly a Davis history though. Actually I was looking for whoever sent me a photo of 4 Broome sisters. I have gotten some new photos of the Broomes and what to see if I can identify them. Was that you who sent me that photo? I had a crash and lost so much from my computer! Not good. Patsy, I missed your original posting I think. What photo were you looking for help on?
I don't know what my Broome connection is, but think it is probably later, may be 1900's. I'll try to find it. All nature seems to be in calm repose in quiet eventide, yet there's a sadness pervading all. there are aching hearts that the moonlight cannot turn to reverie, nor the sunlight cheer. There's a vacant chair, a tender voice that cannot be replaced; home is home no longer; mother is not there. The dearest treasure heaven lends to earth is with us no more. Death, without pity, comes into our midst unawares and takes the last golden link that binds our hearts and home together. It seems hard to bear such a life; only a broken dream; only a passing smile, overshadowed with sorrow and disappointment. On the 17 inst. the death angel visited the home of Mrs Elizabeth Fleek and claimed her as his victim, aged 88 years and 6 days. She is survived by five children, two sons and three daughters, John Fleek of Cabin Run; Henry Fleek, of Keyser; Misses Annie and Susie Fleek, of Cabin Run and Mrs Maggie Haines of Hampshire. Also one brother, Rev Samuel Umstot, of Mineral County, and two sisters in the West. Her husband, one son and one daughter having preceded her to the great beyond. Years ago she united with the M E church, South, of which she ever after remained a zealous and consistent member, thereby setting an example worthy OF imitation by each one of her children and relatives. She was one of the most loveable and motherly women we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was especially loved by the children of the neighborhood, whom she always loved to be with, telling and admonishing them to be good and to try and walk in the footsteps of the godly. Oh, that every boy and girl throughout the length and breadth of our great country could have such a mother as she has been, crime and prisons would be unknown and in their stead love, respect and harmony would reign supreme. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev Oliver, after which the remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the family graveyard in the presence of a large concourse of friends. The pall bearers were John and Henry Fleek, Charlie, Newton, Isaac, Wright and Albert Umstot The treasures of earth must fail, It's riches and honor and glory decay, But the riches of love that are mine, Even death cannot take them away. Hi Helen, I thought too that perhaps the home was built earlier than 1870's. Maybe the 187? was when, maybe Susan & others, did some additions to the original log cabin. Janet was very happy to get additional information on the family. She was unable to find much more. If you want to see the home--check it out at www.wp-labs.com If you click on the photo's of the house they will enlarge. At present, they are taking the siding off. They have to get the logs re-caulked before winter. They call the property Whispering Pines. We hope to get over this week-end with camera. It will be hard for me to get away from her with no puppies. I think you had contacted Janet last January with some data of the Fleek family. She had an email from you. I have been doing research in Hampshire & Mineral county---looking to connect my western MD. Parker family with those of Hampshire/Mineral Co. areas. Thanks again for your help. Take Care & have a great week-end Pat H.
Glad to be of help when possible. I live in CA, and have never been to WV at all. I wouuld love to see the log cabin. It is very logical that your Susan would be Arthur and Elizabeth (Umstot) Fleek's daughter. I don't believe she ever married, an was alive into the 1900s. Now, it may have been an earlier home on the property of her parents. She may have been given or left that house as she was alone, while her siblings married. Perhaps there was an addition or alteration in 187_, but could that have possibly been 179_? Just a thought. Helen
Hi everyone, Thank you all who helped identify the Arthur Fleek family. The present owners of the Fleek home are trying to restore the original building. Their Deed only mentions Susan Fleek. I thought too, that a log cabin was kind of meager for a 1870's home. I thought Brick and other building materials were used & preferred by that time. My curiosity has gotten the best of me now. I would like to know if that homestead was built before 1870's. I know over the years that some additions and updates were done to the dwelling. Any addition info would be welcome. Thanks again Take Care Pat H.
I believe the Susan you are looking for is: Susan M. Fleek born 8 May 1859 New Creek Station Hampshire County now (Mineral) died 17 June 1944 Cabin Run, Mineral County, West Virginia. Parents Arthur and Elizabeth A. ( Umstot) Fleek. Ron
Patti, maybe you can help with mapping this out. I took a bit more extensive census notes, with the location noted. I have also included the 1880 census. According to Susan's mother's obit, this Susan didn't marry, at least not before 1912. Hi Dan, Yes that helps a great deal. I will go up in Census from there. That looks like Susan as 11 yrs. old in 1870. So I doubt if she built house. Must have been her folks. Thanks a bunch Pat H.

Patti, Thanks for your reply. List has been quiet, I wasn't sure I was still on. I don't think she knows who Susan Fleek's parents were. In the attic of the home is etched in the wood---roman numerals as 187?. That 4th number can't be read. In the search which she has done so far is just the name Susan Fleek on the Property Deed. She is wondering if it was Susans parents who owned the land & built the house. Seems like Susan never married, but we don't know for sure. Thanks for any help in finding this Fleek family. Take Care Pat H.
