    1. [WVMINERA] Census Mistakes
    2. The Ellis Family
    3. Boy I have found mistakes worse than 3 years off on an age. I found my grandmother listed as the youngest child at age 1 in the 1900 census when she was actually 10. My father, Clint Alvy Pierce, should have been 8 in the 1920 census. Instead he was listed as Clint age 7 and Alvy age 8!!!! So you have to evaluate the census info and sometimes just use it as a guideline. Carol in Northridge, CA

    3. This is true, and the USGenWeb Guidelines on transcribing the Census, tells transcribers to type the Census exactly as is. (Even though it is obvious that there is a mistake). It is suggested to note the possible Census taker's error. I've already transcribed one and am working on another, and will be the first to tell you I doubt any of these Census Taker's were college material. (You all may remember my trouble with the census a few months ago). Some of them seem to be new to this country also, as names and states are misspelled. Also, the ages didn't agree with the year of birth, etc. Patti At 12:43 AM 7/27/00 -0400, you wrote: >Barbara, > >Never take ages or spellings in census records as absolute >gospel--mistakes were >frequently made. 1. [WVMINERA] Leases-Ft Ashby Cemetery
    2. In answer to the 7/17question posted to Mineral County by [email protected] (marie robey): My husband and I went to the Fort Ashby Cemetery in Hampshire County, West Virginia in July 1999 looking for Lease burials. We wrote down all the Leases we could find. They are: Norah Lee, daughter of A.J. & P.C. Lease died May 29, 1906 age 24 years, 4 mos, 22 days (in front of the above was Anna Lease - no other information) To the right of the "tall section" was: Lease, Gertrude S. 1891-1949 * and Lease, Adam M. 1880-1957 * They were next to: Lease, Arthur L. 1917-1984 and Lease, Dorotha M. 1920-1962 and Lease, Baby 4-3-1948 Baby daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.D. Lease 1960 (note: this baby was near the foot of * above) Lease, George W. 1911-1974 and Lease, Myrtle I. 1915-1997 Somewhere behind the "middle section" was: Lease "Our Darling" 1963 Rebecca S., Daughter of Arthur & Sandra Lease Front of tall hill: Father: Lease, Charles J. 1906-19__ Mother: Lease, Ruth E. 1916-1972 To the left of them was: Hazel T. Lease Steigerwald 1903-1949 That's all the Lease burials we could find. I stopped in a near-by drug store, and the lady there told me the caretaker's name and suggested that I might call him, which I did. I can't remember the group he belongs to, like perhaps the Masons (they took over the care of the cemetery in the 1950's, I believe). He said there were no written records of who was buried there, and when they took over the care of the cemetery, it was in very bad shape. So basically, what you see on the tombstones is all the information there is (unless, of course someone has recorded information on their relatives privately through the years, or if someone has researched and documented Lease death records for Hampshire County). However, there must be quite a few Leases buried in unmarked graves because there is a book by Hazel Elisabeth Thornton on the Leise/Lease families and many of them were "buried in Fort Ashby Cemetery". 3. Posted on: Mineral County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Mineral~?read=194 Surname: Jinkins, Jenkins, Wilt, Fazenbaker, Coleman ------------------------- The borders between Mineral County and the counties of Maryland didn't exist for the early settlers it seems. Jinkins, Fazenbaker, Wilt, and Coleman relatives lived on either side and went to church on both sides of the line. The biggest puzzle now is finding out more about Phineas and Elizabeth Coleman's children and if there is any new history on the Wilt family. Found recently an ancestor was Eva Wilt, born around 1790 in Virginia. She would have been too young to be Henry and Susannah Wilt's Eva who would have been born sometime in the 1760's. Any thoughts?

    1. [WVMINERA] Isaac Welch, Charity Welch, John Welch
    2. Hi, I so appreciate all the information available on this site. I have been researching the above family for months and just got back my g-grandfathers death certificate which lists his parents as "don't know". He was born Sept. 8, 1842 and died in Antioch, Grant Co. on Jan. 7, 1924. He was married to Mary Susan McDonald and had children William, Estey, Wilbert T., Madora (my grandmother), Burl, and Vernon. The death certificate lists the person who gave the information as W. T Welch, which I assume is Wilbert T. I am trying to find out if the John Welch who is age 9 in the 1850 census, child of Charity and Thomas Welch, is the same as my John Welch. I realize that there is a year difference, but mistakes can be made. I do have the undertaker as David Rotruck of Martine? W. Va.. I am pretty sure this is the correct family because Israel Welch who lives now with his sister in Burlington, is a third cousin, so I assume his grandfather, James and my John were brothers. Any suggestions as to what to do next? Thanks, Barbara Sheehan

    3. I have a copy of the book you asked about. My mother gave it to me not long after it was published. I was printed by Keyprint, Inc. I don't know whether that's in Keyser or not. The PSC Library may have a copy and would copy what you wanted.
