Thelma, Actually, there is a very small place called South Branch in Hampshire Co. It is a few miles ESE of Green Spring (SE of Oldtown, Md.), along the railroad tracks, just across the river from Allegany Co. In the heyday of trains, it was probably occupied by railroad workers. Apparently, it was also known as South Branch Depot at one time, and there was a post office there. If you want to see its location on a map, go to http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html. Type in South Branch as the feature name, Hampshire as the county name, and select West Virginia as the state. You will get a few hits. Scroll down the map to where you can zoom in on it at the bottom. Hi, Due to belonging to this list and Hampshire I have learned living at South Branch could mean many places and there is no South Branch itself. I learned this after I thought my ggrandfather's civil war papers had solved a great mystery as to where he lived as a child. So this is my next dumb question and please bare with me. If you lived at/in South Branch in 1850 where would the children go to school? Were there schools up and down South Branch or ?????? Thanks for putting up with my confusion of South Branch. Thelma
Ms. Hartman: Do you really feel comfortable distributing someone else's research? Ernie Moreland, who is a cousin of mine, travelled a great distance and spent over a week in Hampshire County and other places doing extensive research on our Moreland ancestors, digging through old records, etc., and has been generous enough to send me a copy of his research. I would never dream of handing out his hard-earned research without his prior approval. I have shared much of my own research with many individuals, but this is a good example of why many people, including myself, would not deposit their research in a public library. It is one thing for someone to use it for their own individual use, but to offer public distribution of someone else's hard work is just not kosher. It would be different if this were a work compiled 50 years ago and the author deceased, but this work is only about 3 years old, and the author is alive and well with, God willing, many good years ahead of him. I know I will probably get a lot of flack for my comments from others on this list, especially those who have only to drive a few miles to get their information, and, therefore, don't appreciate how some of us have to plan our trips well in advance and then travel hundreds of miles at considerable expense of time and funds. I have copies of information researched and compiled by Ernest L. Moreland of early Moreland families of Hampshire and Hardy Counties. The papers are from the Hardy County Library in Moorefield. Will be glad to send them off list to anyone who sends me their E-Mail address. The information is TIF files and needs to be downloaded. Can also send snail mail if you prefer. Patti, I did find something very interesting in your latest posting. One memoriam posting states that the deceased "Mrs Wagley was born at Kitzmiller, now Blaine WV, March 1, 1860." The big question is, when was the name changed from Kitzmiller to Blaine? A cousin and I have been trying to locate the graves of my g-aunt and two of her children who were reportedly buried in Kitzmiller. We just assumed that meant Kitzmiller, Md., across the river, even though my g-aunt's family lived in Potomac Manor. My g-aunt's grandson reported visiting the graves with his mother many, many years ago and swore it was in "Kitzmiller." From the way he described the area, it was a rural cemetery--indeed, he reported being chased by a bull at the time. I tried looking at the Blaine section of "Mineral Co. Communities" on the Mineral Co. page for a clue, but all it had was "NDA 1933. It was named for James G. Blaine...." What is "NDA"? Is this the year the town became Blaine? The newspaper article is dated 1911, so I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
